Prasad,

The route is Mysore - Hunsur - Gonikkoppal - Makkutta - Irikkur - Sreekantapuram - Thalipparamba - Payyanur (Perumba) - Cheruvathur - Nileswaram. The road condition is very good.

I haven't recently travelled via Madikeri-Panathur-Kanhanghad.

Thanks
Rajesh

I would be driving from Bangalore to Bekal in two weeks, so I request info on the most recommended route.

In another thread, Ampere has suggested in September2014 that,

Quote:
Hassan-Sakleshpur-Gundya-Kukke-Jalsoor-Cherkala-Bekal
That would have given you best of both worlds.
Does it still hold good? Or is there a better route available now? Reques inputs please.

Thanks.

As per I know last its still the best option. But I dont know the current status. Some notes:

- Its about 400km
- Up to Sakleshpur its fast to cover.
- The rest is winding roads. Would be good to have folks prepared on that.
- Kukke is the last place on this stretch where I think you get a good break point for the family.
- I assume you would be already be aware of hotels on NH4.
- Sakleshpur also has some decent places. But dont expect much after Kukke.
- Lets also hear from others; about the current status.

Thanks for the prompt response, ampere
Actually I haven't read up on the places I could halt for breakfast etc, so I'd be grateful for inputs.

Winding roads are not a problem, broken roads are what I'd want to avoid.

I would be travelling with family, all female crew apart from me, so pointers to any precautions to take are also welcome.

No dearth of places for breakfast:

- Swathi Delicacy 8km after after Kunigal bypass
- Adigaas another few further up
- Coffee Day after Neligere toll
- Mayura further up
- Kamat after CR Patna
- Vijay Comforts : At Kukke town start point

Hi Ampere,
Followed the route recommended by you today.
Left home (near RT Nagar) @ 0610h and reached Vivanta, Bekal @ 1300h with two breaks of 15 mins each. Near perfect route, rated 5 Stars!

@rednikhil, @ampere,

Thank you so much for the guidance on this route. I think this is most suited for our proposed trip.

My wife and I are planning to drive to Bekal from Chennai, mid April. We'll be staying overnight in Bangalore in Electronic City, plan on leaving B'lore by 8a.m through the NICE ring road, touching Hassan to reach Bekal early noon. With the route you guys suggested (and the ratings) I think we should be able to reach Kukke for lunch, doing a comfortable speed.

Do you guys have any other suggestions or insights especially @rednikhil considering you just did the trip? We'll be driving our Figo, which would be fantastic on the ghat roads, I hope.

If possible leave Bangalore earlier say by 5am and this way you can reach Bekal by noon for lunch. Options for breaks on the highway are more on the Yediyur-Channarayapatna-Udayapura stretch before Hassan (these will not need any deviation from highway) so plan to stop somewhere for breakfast.
Some options are:
- Swathi Delicacy, Yediyur (right side)
- Mayura, Bellur Cross (left side)
- A2B, Udayapura (left side)

There are few hotels in Sakleshpur as well, after that your next bet (other than shacks) would be in Kukke - Vijay Comforts is good.

You can refer my earlier post - here (Bangalore - Bekal Fort (Kasargod) - Kabini : Route Queries)

With an 8AM start, you will make it to Bekal by 4/4:30. Assuming you take 40 minutes to an hour for lunch. Assume 5-6 hours for Kukke. Add another 2 to 2.5 hours from here to Bekal. You will lots of windings roads from Kukke to Jalsoor. Vijay Comforts is a good place for lunch in Kukke.

The roads are perfect so no worries on that account.
Just follow google maps, it's very accurate in this case.
Insights:
  • Very fast upto 200 km, 4 lanes.
  • Lots of Ghats after that.
  • Scenic jungle roads.
  • Low traffic volume.
  • Start early morning to avoid late evening driving.
  • If your destination is Bekal, look out for a left turn after Jalsoor; google guidance is pretty accurate here. That way, you can avoid Kasargod.
  • Be mindful that it's easy to over speed on this route, kindly avoid. Drive steady, drive safe.

@ampere, @rednikhil: I'm pretty psyched for my road trip next week and looks like we are getting that early morning start from Bangalore. Thanks for the suggestions to leave by 5a.m. which we will definitely aim at.

I also downloaded 'here' maps. I've heard they are very useful offline especially, which I felt would be critical in the Madikeri region considering cell phone connectivity might be a problem.

Just wondering if you have heard any news about the change in road conditions in that area? I think it will still be as you had mentioned before.

You can download the relevant map portions as "Offline areas" on Google Maps also. Navigation works fine in these areas even without connectivity - the only limitation being that it will not provide alternate routes based on real time traffic updates.

How is the condition of this road: Sakleshpur - Gundya - Kukke?

The road is great all through. In fact a stretch (don't recall exactly which) is freshly surfaced making things even better.
