Nothing to feel nervous about the ghats. Avoid using excessive braking while on the descent. Engine brake as much as possible. The right of way is always for the vehicle climbing up. dont be in a hurry while taking bends. honk if you cannot see the road ahead around a curve. Enjoy the scenery & stop for a while to soak it in.

why alternate route?. Bangalore- Salem route is excellent and I am sure you will enjoy this high speed stretch. Get in to Salem town (deviate from NH) at the first second round-about. If I am right, you will enter in to a big circle with 5 or six roads, take the third left - go through small towns to reach the fun part. Roads are good and yerkaad is a wonderfull place.

Enjoy!!

Having lived in Yercaud for ten years I must say it is a place well worth a long trip to. Regarding the route, from B'lore it would be via Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Yercaud which would come to a total of 230 kms.

You have to reach Salem to get to Yercaud. From B'lore to Salem the NH-7 is the best possible route. I cant think of another route for that. The Salem - Yercaud main ghat stretch is around 24 kms and it is a narrow winding ghat with 20 hairpin bends. There is another ghat route from Salem to Yercaud via Kuppanoor which is not recommended. After reaching Salem take a left from the NH-7 to reach 5-roads junction. Take the left at that roundabout (you'll see the direction board marked Yercaud in the roundabout) and proceed. When you reach Asthampatty 4 roads junction, take the left again and that leads to the ghat road.

The cardinal rule while driving to Yercaud is to use the horn as much as possible because of the innumerable blind curves. And also at times you need to get to the edge of the road to let an oncoming vehicle pass. Be careful when trying to overtake vechicles and do so only after ensuring there is no approaching curve. And do use the horn continuously when overtaking.

Other than that it is really nothing to worry about. The scenery and the climate is well worth the trip. What vehicle do you drive?

yup the route is ok and your wagon r will do just fine, watch out for buses on the ghat sections, so use horn often, switch off stereo or very low volume.

to give you an idea of road (ghat) this is what it will look like

avoid riding clutch (uphill) and brakes (down hill)

there are some areas around where you can visit but roads might be really bad (atleast was a year back)

so careful but dont have to be scared or anythin, keep the visits for day light hours.

enjoy your trip

Route is Bangalore->Hosur->Krishnagiri(bypass)->Dharmapuri->Salem->Yercaud

Road from Bangalore to Krishnagiri is excellent. Part of the Golden Quadrilateral. The trouble starts right after that. The highway from Krishnagiri to Salem is being four laned and particularly the stretch from Krishnagiri to Dharmapuri (40kms approx) is bad. Watch out for huge potholes. Also there might not be any shoulders to the road in certain sections. Due to this traffic appears to be very heavy in that sector.

Watch out when you overtake or if someone is overtaking. There might not be a shoulder in case you have to move to the side. Buses and tempos are the biggest problem in this sector.

Dharmapuri to Salem road is also being converted to four lane. Except for one stretch after thoppur the road is good.

Avoid overtaking on curves and anticipate that some idiot might be overtaking on a curve on the opposite side.
