Its good to get these first hand info about hotels. Most of the good budget hotels get clouded into holydayIQ and cleartrip lists and its very difficult to actually know if they are good or not.

Default Go for Kings Cliff

I see someone mentioned a place "enroute to Kings Cliff". Why not Kings Cliff itself? Wifey & I stayed here in our honeymoon. The place is an old planter's bungalow converted into a hotel. 7-8 rooms, all named after Shakespearean dramas. Beautiful beyond imagination.

Is this place open for public now?
We have stayed in this place in 1997. It used to be a guest house of Tata Steel, muh dad worked there then.
Nice place, nevertheless. They had a great game room and will bring out the carom board on the garden if you request.
It's great feeling to stand and play carom while it's a little misty and occassional chilling winds.
Very nice, very nostalgic.

Also curious to know why a normal hotel type of accom like Sterlings Fernhill charge 3950/room wherease places like Kings Cliff and Willow Hill who offer a cottage/bunglow for 2075/room.

Any idea ?

I guess its directly proportional to their awareness. The very fact that you know about Sterlin makes them charge more.

Any outsider (or a global chain) providing service in a hill station will charge much higher than the similar service offered by a local guy.

I thought so much Ampere. Thanks

Meanwhile Willow Hill has bad reviews for its service and the attitude of their staff !(Mouthshut, Trip advisor etc) while Kings Cliff is praised by lot of people. I think I shall stick onto Kings Cliff. I posed a query to them this morning for which I have recieved their response already, looks quite prof.

I had been to Ooty last year, with a promise of coming next year. For that reason alone, I did not go to Conoor !

Building up all this for my next visit to this place.

Eh, never knew it was a Tata Steel guest house!

Well there's no game room now. But I'm a fan of reading. This place had a library with comfy armchairs, and they lit a fireplace in the evening. Reading a book sprawled out on the armchair, with the fire crackling beside you - pure bliss!

Don't know the current rates. In December 2008 the best room was 3.5K a night.

AFAIK, Sherlock is owned by the same group as Kings Cliff. Its an awesome place in its own right, but I found KC a better package. Just an opinion
