| Senior - BHPian | Hi guys, I am planning to go to Vizag with family on June 2nd by road from Hyderabad. I know there are 2 routes ---one via Suryapet-Khammam-Ashwaraopet-Rajamundry-Vizag and the other via Suryapet-Vijayawada-Rajamundry-Vizag. I am told the NH5 from Vijaywada to Vizag is damn good. But I am not sure of the road from Hyd to Vijaywada(NH9). I did a trip via Khammam 3 years ago (as NH5 was being widened then and was pathetic), and the road was pretty good, though only 2 lane with no divider. It saved me around 60 kms distance. But it was a desolate road, especially from Khammam to Rajamundry. I dont mind going via Vijaywada this time, though a bit longer--the superb NH5 from there to Vizag is luring me. But what about the road from Hyd to Vijaywada? I hope it does not cause nightmares. Someone told me it was getting widened. Any suggestions will surely help me. Thanks in advance !! |

| ok... vnabhi... you have caught the attention of the right guy. akroy is our resident travel guru. ![]() By the way the roads should not be bad. Only problem is as my friend was saying once are the villagers. Villages dot across these highways and people literally squat on the roads, drive bullock carts, bikes, tractors and that too on the wrong side of the roads.

Most importantly, being a double road (one lane in each direction), it attracts rash driving from buses and trucks. Be watchful of oncoming buses and truckers passing other vehicles 1. they drive you off road 2. they pass other vehicles even in hairpin bends/ curves 3. Suddenly stop to pickup cabin riders The last 50-100 KMs (after Nandigama) to VJWD is damn good, two lanes in each direction. Avoid the temptation to speed, watch for village animals and villagers. This is out of my experience driving a couple of times last year and a bus trip this year. Find out the latest conditions from Satish, I think he drives frequently to RJMNDRY. | |

As far as Vijayawada route is concerned, dont do night driving on NH9, the night buses are king that time...best time is to start from Hyd at 5AM, by 6AM you will reach the 2 lane road (initial 30-40km is 4 laned so no issues)... after that u will get relatively less traffic... keep 80-100kmph speed (dont go beyond !!!), you can reach Vijayawada by 10-11AM... Abhi

| Just got back from Vizag last night through the Vizag - Vwada - Hybad route. Did the route in about 13 hours from the hotel to my home in Hybad , including lunch & dinner breaks. You do know that the Vyzag - VWada route is great, however can't say the same for Hybad - Vwada - this route can become a virtual nightmare with zillions of trucks plying at 30km an hour (and of course those empty trucks that think they are dirt bikes!). Leaves you with very little space to overtake because of the oncoming traffic. There are several accidents along the route - most cars snapped in half! The traffic was marginally better on our way back - the only problem is the lack of a divider. Don't know about the Khammam route - I doubt if it will be worse. |

| Vizag to Vijywada was about 402km - took about 5 hrs (speed was pretty good tho getting out of Vizag took away from the average speed even on that road). Vijaywada to Hyd took about 6hrs - about 270km. Do let me know how the Khamman route turned out if you do take it! |

| BHPian | vnabhi. I sent you a PM on the current state of the Khammam road. I did my last trip on this road in January. The Khammam - Devarpalli road was not as good as it was one year ago. The 50 KMs stretch between Sattupalli and Jangaredii gudem has lots of big pot holes. The rest of the road is good. While returning back to Hyd from Rjy, i took the Vijayawada route. The drive from Rjy to Vijayawada was a blast. i did the 180 KMs stretch in 2.5 hours. If you are familiar with Vijayawada, i head there is a shorter to reach Hyd bound road via bunder road. I went via bust stand and it took me 1 hour to reach outskirts of Vijayawada. Again the road from Vijayawada to Nandigama is a blast with 4 lanes and a median. But past Nandigama it's a nightmare with the heavy traffic. This stretch is very boring too. I don't think it's worth to take this route.Total it is 270 KMs from Vijayawada to Hyd. I did this in 4 hours. Forgot about enjoying the new 4 lane roads. Withbullock carts, two wheeler, trucks and pedestrains all trying to travel in the wrong lane on these hi speed roads, it's no fun. I had more fun on the Khammam road. Can't wait to go for another drive. |
