I travelled to Ankola in August last year, and stayed at Honey Beach Resort. This is a pretty good option, and the location is secluded & superb! They have a sandy beach, as well as rocky beach besides the resort, plus the view (below) from the resort is just awesome!

Hi, I am planning to drive from Navsari Gujarat to Udupi during third week of August. I will be using NH4 till Dharwad, then NH63 till Ankola and NH17 from ankola to Udupi. I want to know the road condition of the notorious NH17. Is is drivable in a Grand i10?

The other option you can use:

- Nh4 till Ranebennur/Harihar
- On to Shimoga (via Honnali) and further Thirthahalli
- And there on to Agumbe-Someshwar-Hebri-Udupi.

This should reduce your 2-lane driving section. I assume you will be breaking at Hubli/Belgaum.

Hello BHPians!

We are planning a Road Trip to Coastal Karnataka in the month of October (9 Days and 8 Nights). I need some advice in itinerary planning and choices of stopovers.

Idea is to fly to Bangalore and hire a rent-a-car (Zoomcar / Myles ) to drive through Coorg , Mangalore, Udipi , Murudeshwar, Gokarna, Sirsi, Jog Falls, Sringeri, Back to Bangalore either via coorg or via Hassan.

Proposed Route Map is as follows: https://goo.gl/maps/bk8MEKzFp8R2

Mind you this is purely my vision. So, any practical suggestions or improvements are welcome!

What we plan to see / experience are:
  • Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
  • Coorg, Madikeri
  • Mangalore, Malpe Beach, St Marys Island
  • Murudeshwar, Om -Paradise Beach Trek, Mahabaleshvar Temple
  • Karwar
  • Yana Caves, Mohini Shikhara, Sahasra Lingam
  • Banavasi, Jog Falls, Unchelli Falls,

What I need is
  • Suggestion on whether this is good itinirary for 9 days - 8 nights Road trip?
  • Anything we need to add / remove?
  • Places where we can get good food ? Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian (Sea-food)?
  • Any route we should avoid - because of road condition or safety?
  • Any route we must not miss - due to sheer scenary en-route?

Hi,

I hope this message reaches you before your travel date.

I traveled from Pune to Udipi and back between 13 Aug and 15 Aug 2017. I didn't take the first exit to NH 63 after Dharwad. I prefer to take the second one. I find the first one to be too desolate a stretch to travel with my wife and kids. The roads were good all the way except for some bad patches at Arbail or Yellapur ghats, but nothing serious. Be careful on this 6 km stretch where overtaking at turns is the norm.

There are too many diversions because of highway widening after Ankola and you have to be really careful if you are driving in the night. The private buses on these routes overtake on turns and one is forced to go off the road to the side. The roads after Kunapura till Udupi is a brilliant 4 lane toll road.

This is the route I took:

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thanks,

Pradeep
