Very sorry, brother. Have been travelling of late, and had not been able to follow as much as I normally do. This route struck me after I was thinking of a variation to the BLR-Solapur route query that another TBHP-ian had asked for (that one also uses the same Shimoga - Hospet SH, but going N-E from Harihar).

@Condor: Thanks a lot for that update. This is really going to help fellow travellers especially with the partying season heating up in Goa (Dec).

Oh that T-BHPian(sidkun) asking for Solapur is a friend of mine.
anyway, I'll take this route next time I travel towards KArwar/Goa.. Thanks a lot .But I really hope they'll fix the Shimoga road also soon.

Whats the distance between Ko Halli to Karwar?

Is it safe for a night drive?

Thanks in advance

As per the discussions, I think from Ko halli the below route makes sense

Ko Halli ->Sagar -> Talaguppa -> Siddapur -> Sirsi -> Devimane ghat -> Mirjan ->Gokarna-> Ankola -> Karwar
Which will be around 272 kms...
Also road frm jog to honnavar is bad for about 20 kms, hence above route is preferable.... Correct me if I'm wrong.....

Abhi, the route you mention sounds good. Going via Sirsi & Mirjan was also suggested in another thread.

But distance from Ko Halli to Karwar is actually lesser than your estimate - it is about 240km via Sirsi, & 237 km via Honavar.

@Spitfire: Ko Halli - Karwar is 240km.

Bangalore- Davanagere - Haveri - Sirsi - Devimane - Mirjan - Ankola - Karwar is probably the best one as of now.

The stretch bewteen Honnavar to Ankola is in bad shape and the one between Hubli to Ankola is in even worse shape courtesy the rains and the overloaded manganese lorries. The road between Sirsi to NH-17 (Mirjan) is in pretty decent shape.

Yes. This is also a good route.

Just the incomplete stretches between Davangere & Haveri which will have you switching sides (left to right to left and so on) ever so often, and taking by-pass sections where the bridges are under construction.

About NH4 between Chitradurga and Hubli around 100km bad roads progress status: there is no hope to get this 4 laned soon :( its taking more time than expected because of disputes etc.. I hope they at least maintain the road as it is right now so it can be motorable.

I even heard doing maintanance is problem where land dispute is going on, this is very unfortunate situation where highway central minister is from Karnataka.

Regards,

Raavi.

CHitradurga-Davangere is also good. Upto the point where Davangere-Harihar by-pass starts. Actually one of my fav sections of NH4 in Karnataka.

But Davangere-Hubli has been going on for a very long time. At least part of the original contract has apparantly been given to another company because of these disputes & delays.

Bangalore to Mangalore you can see lot of bad strech, ghat section is too bad, i feel overall 100km bad road.

Mangalore to Ankola its very bad almost 200km.

Ankola to Goa is quiet ok.

If you need not visit Mangalore I suggest take this route -> Bangalore -> Shimoga -> Sagar -> siddapur -> Sirsi -> Ankola -> Goa

Ravi.
