Same here, took the Chorla ghat route and found it's the fastest to North Goa.

Lost time while going, took Dharwad-Alnavar-Ramnagar-Khanapur-Jamboti route, surface has gone bad and had to manage on slow speeds.

While coming back drove straight via Belgaum. As mentioned, only few 50 - 100 mts stretches on the Chorla ghat road are bad but manageable.

Here is a photo of a Very nice dual-waterfall I found on the way to Goa-Belgaum on chorla-ghat.

Don't know if this one has a name. I just got a glimpse of it on the road (would've easily missed it as it is covered by the trees). Stopped the car, got on to a side and had to walk up a little on a walled ledge to get best possible shot. Couldn't get a shot that captures the whole falls till it lands on the ground.

Does anyone know the name of this falls?

Hey that's a beauty! I seemed to have missed it completely. Do you remember in which stretch of Chorla ghat?
While going towards Goa, we stopped at one place from where there was a valley view on the left. Then there were couple of small waterfallls right on the road (on the right side) and then we stopped at one place where we could see the Anjunem lake and dam on the right side.
If you can share approximate location...like say before Anjunem lake view towards Goa..may be I can try to locate it next time. Thanks

As regards to NH4, it was never about beauty of the road. It's always about efficiency.
The stretch just after Ankola was a bit potholed , of course in retrospect,nothing compared to our wonderful Kanakapura road , I guess I was spoilt by the week of driving on Goa roads.There were lumbering trucks, so the potholes were not easy to spot from a distance. Interestingly the potholes were only on the left side of the road (ie Ankola-Yellapur direction). Nearer Yellapur the road was much better surfaced.

We saw it around the stretch where we saw a few boards of a resort called Wildernest. it was on our left side, while driving towards Belgaum.

Yes, the view of the Lake was breathtaking too. I certainly enjoyed the Chorla route from Goa than the Karwar route.

Did Bangalore -Goa on the 14th and back on the 18th. We were 4 adults and 2 kids in my trusty old Baleno. It raining on and off in Goa and a little more than usual.
We took the Bangalore --> Bankapur -->Mundgod --> Yellapur --> Ankola --> Palolem. The Bankapur to Yellapur stretch is a single road and the surface is bad for about 10 km or so but the whole route is very scenic as it passes through a reserve forest. You will not save any time using this route but will definitely enjoy it.
We left Ulsoor at 5.30 AM and reached Palolem at 3.30 PM after stops for Breakfast (Kamat Upachahr Ranebennur 09.00 AM) and lunch (Kamat Upachar Ankola 2.00 PM).
On the way back we came through Karwar -->Honnavar --> Sagar --> Shimoga --> Tumkur --> Bangalore as we had some work in Shimoga. The road is a 2 lane but the surface is good. It will take you much longer than the Hubli road. We left at 11.30 AM and reached Bangalore at 1.00 AM.

Goa now charges a entry fee of Rs 250/- for entry of private cars. We paid a toll of Rs 330/- on the way up and about Rs 100/ - on the way down.

We stayed in Palolem Beach Resort, the resort is very rundown and not worth the price they charge (1200 non ac and 1500 ac + 10% tax). We had an ac room where the ac did not work. Wife was very upset with the place. In a word AVOIDABLE.

Post a review in trip advisor it will help others. Off season normally resorts are not well maintained.

I did a Goa trip during the last long weekend as well. I started at 0430hrs on 16th morning. Took the following route: Bangalore>Dharwad>Molem>Ponda>Goa. The roads are fantastic till Dharwad. The only serious part to note is a set of bumps somewhere close to hubli which often goes unnoticed. They can cause serious damage to your vehicle if you miss them at high speeds! These are quite dark and there are no sign boards indicating them either. Between Hubli and Dharwad, the four-lane road is constructed about a kilometer apart. This results in a two 2-lane highways, so you may get confused initially on why there's oncoming traffic.

The roads from Dharwad to Goa is a ghat section and there are quite some dangerous stretches where there's no road literally! You really have to slow down to 20kph, explore which patch to take and proceed. I took advantage of another car which was trailing me, by letting them overtake me and following them till the bad patch was over. There are a couple of places on the actual ghat sections where the potholes are huge! Again, only guess helps or my previous method.

Everything else is a breeze!

I'm planning for a road trip from Bangalore to South Goa starting on 7th Sep and returning back on 10th Sep. We are a family of three with a 3.5Year old kid. Driving a swifty vdi.

We were contemplating on either of the following routes and wanted to know which is better in terms of road surface and distance. As I'm travelling with a child in a swift I would prefer to go on a smooth surface :-)

1. Blr->Hubli->Bankapur->Mundgod->Yellapur->Ankola->Karwar->South Goa
2. Blr->Hubli->Alnavar->Ponda->South goa
3. Blr->Hubli->Belgaum->Chorla->Sanquelim->Ponda->South Goa
4. Blr->Tumkur->Shimoga->Honnavar->Kumta->Ankola->Karwar->South Goa

Plan is to start as early as 4-5AM from Bangalore. Planning for benne dosa in Davangere for breakfast :-)

Last heard Bankapur-Yellapur had bad sections,better to go via hubli.hubli-yellapur-baleguli cross-right turn-karwar-south goa.Going via bankapur also adds up time.

Hi Nitin

Is the highway construction work on the Blr-Hubli stretch complete OR are the detours/diversions still there?

Thanks a ton Ranjit!

One more question. Would you know the fog conditions on this route?

The reason I ask is that I am planning a late night drive from Bangalore to Goa on the coming weekend and am planning to leave home at around 2 AM. This timing has worked well for me in the past as I it allows me to travel most of the distance (at least up to Hubli) with the kids quietly sleeping in their car seats!

However, I am told that some stretches can have a pretty dense fog cover due to the rain that we have been having of late. More than the fog, its the truck / tractor / tempo / car etc drivers who drive on the wrong side to save a few miles that makes me think twice before covering this route on a foggy night!

Any experience about stretches to be especially careful about (due to the construction work) OR periods of time to avoid would be great!!

The perennial 6-lane work on Tumkur-Chitradurga is almost complete. The 6-lane is super and really worth the effor the authorities have put in. Beyond Chitradurga there is no need for a 6-lane per se. Traffic is thin, you just fly on that stretch.
