For an additional 40km you can try :

Tanjore-Trichy bypass - Dindigul - Dharapuram - Palladam - CBE

But you endure the last section. Else its brilliant. 4-lane till Dindigul. Good roads to Dharampuram and Palladam. This once you end on GST from NH67 from Tanjore, you just latch on to GST and you dont need to get into Trichy again!

Ampere thanks! What about Karur-Kodumudi-Erode-Cbe? I find that's 34km more than
Karur-Vellaikoil-Kangayam-Palladam-Cbe. But then one endures the 2 lane torture
only for 62km between Karur and Erode and enjoy the 4 lanes from Erode to Cbe
That seems a reasonable trade-off, no?

On a different topic, the merciless sand mining from Cauvery river bed is really
a matter of concern. Had seen similar thing on Chennai-Villupuram route in Tamilnadu.

Cheers

Looks good to me. But I thought you said even Trichy Karur has lots of trucks. Hence I suggested the Dindigul option.

This is very true. Esp beyond Trichy towards Grand Anicut/Thiruvaiyaru its even works.

You could either do that or Trichy-Nochiyam-Thuraiyur-Namakkal-Tiruchengode-Erode-Coimbatore (or) Trichy-Nochiyam-Thuraiyur-Namakkal-Salem-Coimbatore.

Oh no! Had terrible experience on Thuraiyur-Namakkal-tiruchengode-Erode; traffic is chaotic
and the road was not good for half the way. Well that was 2 years back. Things could have improved, have they?

Cheers

Just realised, that may not help much. Thats because both these towns have no bypasses. So what you save from trucks, you give it to these towns!

It is NH 67 all the way from Karur to CBE via kangeyam, palladam and sulur. Very good extended 2 lane roads. But you can expect traffic at Sulur

Folks,

Will be driving down to Trichy this Sunday (6am start). Any recommendations on the best route, based on current situation?

a) via Namakkal, Thuraiyur
b) via Thottiayam, Musiri
c) or Namakkal, Karur bye pass

Thanks

Choose option c. Even though it is 30 odd kms more compared to Thuraiyur route, karur by pass is a very good extended 2 lane road.

Take the Karur road as Suresh mentioned. The road via Thuraiyur is quite convoluted. Its easy to get lost. And also Thuraiyur option works well if you have to go past Trichy towards Tannjore. Thats because this route directly lands you at Toll Gate and there on you can easily come down to the GST and take the NH67 exit.

But other wise the Karur road is the best. Clean bypass for Karur as well. You drive past Karur on the Nh7 bypass and then take the Trichy exit.

Thanks, have to reach K.K.Nagar in Trichy & hence the other route had easy access therein, whereas the Karur route will lead into Thillainagar & inside the town. But I guess, it should not be a big deal, when the main highways are already covered.

Thanks.

Just checked in Google maps that KK Nagar south of the city; off the Madurai road. In that case actually Thuraiyur option helps.

But the amount of trucks you may have bear when crossing or bypassing Namakkal is just too much. For that I think wading Trichy might be less of a pain.

Better to stick to Thuraiyur route. That way you can catch the bypass at Number 1 Tollgate. Karur route will land you near Chathiram Bus Stand.

Unless you know your way well in Trichy it might not be so easy. Signages are poor inside and you could be going in circles. The location looks accessible from the bypass, stick to it.

Had a personal experience of getting lost in Trichy for almost 2 hrs and pretty much went around the same place almost 2-3 times

Wow! Did not realise it was that bad. I found it to be OK.

But otherwise I do agree that the Thuraiyur option is much cleaner. But wading past Namakkal is big pain. To avoid that many have suggested the option via Budhan Santhai - Senthamangalam - Vadugapatty - Alanganatham. This option works like a charm. (Even I have used it). But one has to deal with lots of truck traffic till one reaches the Namakkal-Kannanur SH. After that its smooth sailing till Trichy.

From Karur Road, there is a right turn that will take you to Thillainagar, bye passing Chatram area. From there one can reach central bus stand and further - there'll be traffic, but not too bad compared to Chatram area...
