Have you guys read the Birth of the Evil Twins thread? There is an exhaustive travelogue from Delhi to Bombay there. Done last month.

hi ..

we'd done mumbai -himachal & back few months ..in 2 cars ..and 4-5 drivers between them..
i wodnt comment on the route since there are many suggestions here..but il talk about the time .as we started off at a odd time .and it worked well for us ..we had planned to halt only 1 night so we make it to himachal before evening on 2nd day

we started off at 1 am ..drove thru the night ..reached udaipur at noon ..stopped had lunch ther the traditional way not ina hotel .by the side of road under some tree shade with whatever packed stuff we had

Crossed jaipur by around 5 ish i think .. halted there for some snacks and beer /chai

Reached to a place on outskirts of Delhi(about 1 hour away) at around 730. we wanted to have a longish break here as the next night we didnt plan to sleep as there was a party .also it makes no sense to even go near delhi as by then theres like a 2 mile queue of trucks .and if u venture into that ul spend 3 hrs there.. so we settled into a decent hotel ..he didnt hav a cook .so he popped into his jeep and drove off to UP to get food. we opened up our booze stock.finished off at 10 .30 and went to sleep /.

started of at 6 am ..next morning ..reached Dhaula kuan around 6.45 ..got a bit of traffic ..also realised there have been some new -no speeding laws implemented ..got a bit lost searching for karnal bypass .sepnt hlaf hour going round and round ..so stopped for breakfast and finally got out of delhi around 8 ...then next halt chandigarh for abeer stop and food ..and then himachal by 6.30...

we would have made better time .but for the fact that we went in 2 diff cars ..1 scorpio and a accent ..teh accent would race ahead and tehn have to wait 20 -30 mins for the scorpio to catch up .as the pickup and teh top speed advantage of the accent really proved itself particularly on the udaipur -jaipur stretch ..thsi happend atleast 2-3 times..

dunno whether that helps you at all /./.but just thought id tell you

cheers
Nik

Default delhi to mumbai in a Getz

hey guys,

My friend and I would be traveling to Mumbai on 12 September. Though, I have never traveled on the route before but I know pretty much the routes thanks to tbhp. Please let me know the following

1. We will be driving a Getz Crdi nonstop. Plan is to leave gurgaon on 12th sep latest by 1 pm and reach Mumbai (powai) by 8 am on 13th sept. How does the timing look. I think this way we would be in Baroda by around 1230am - 1 am and hence can avoid the maddening jams from baroda to surat. Please let me know if its good time.

2. Is it safe to travel in night on these roads. Personally prefer night drving and have done quite a bit of night driving before.

3. Any update on the latest road conditions post monsoons and a quick recap of the route (especially the landmarks for the bypasses at major towns especially Jaipur and Ahmadabad).

4. Have heard about adulteration in fuel on this route. Please suggest a few good bunks.

5. Is it better to go thru the cities after Ahmadabad i.e. avoid bypass roads of Baroda, Baruch and ankleshwar to avoid the trucks.

Waiting for the replys.

Timing looks doable. No guarantees on Baroda-Surat traffic, it is a 24hour mess. But conditions have improved. Yesterday, my friend did it very quick without any stoppage.

No safety problems. But from Kishangarh onwards, road is very sparse traffic and poor facilities till Udaipur.

Road condition is excellent - yesterday's update.

No problem with A'Bad. Going into cities is equally messy, stick to Nh8.

Lots of Pure Sure, Club HP pumps, no problems with fuel quality.

@naman,

Timing is ok.

It is safe to travel, no need to worry.

I dont know about jaipur's bypass but Ahmedabad Ring road is excellent.

If you want to go through the cities, you can go through Baroda but do not go through Bharuch and Ankleshwar.

Jaipur BP is outstanding.
Ahmedabad is even better. You don' go to the old bypass via Narora at all. Nowadays you take the Sardar Patel Ring Road to join the expressway to Baroda.

Jaipur delhi is a royal mess. atleast around shahpura is 20km of semi potholed stuff (basically cheap, uneven repairs) and this arbit surface continues for another 50-70km more. Del - Jaipur is significantly better.

Thanks a lot guys for sharing the info.

I was looking up the map on mapmyindia. Is the bypass marked near Ahmadabad correct on the map or is it the old one. Are the markings clear for the bypass near Ahmadabad to go towards Baroda.

Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world!
Check out Wikimapia link, showing the Ranasan Circle where you turn left off NH8 into Sardar Patel Ring Road off Ahmedabad, when you are coming from Himmatnagar.

Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world!
...and the next link which shows you where the Sardar Pael Ring Road intersects the Baroda expressway.

Hey guys,

Slight change in plans.

My friend has dropped out because he has to go to US for official work. At my end, I can't spare 12 sep weekend.

So, now have decided to make the trip coming weekend (5 sep). I could have taken a flight as well but you all know how it is with people on tbhp . I want to drive my Getz down.

Since I'll be alone, I decided not to do the night driving in later part of the journey. The roads are unknown and I might fell asleep. So now the plan is to leave Gurgaon by Fri morning (1-2 am) and target to reach mumbai by 8 pm. This way I'll be in the area known to me when its dark.

Any pointers for solo driving will be appreciated

@hv : Got the travel log. Thanks a lot for that. Will help me a long way

Naman
