If I understand correctly, 'reach Mumbai by 8pm' same day? I would suggest not. Very tiring and exhaustive. What's the rush? Getz is not a comfortable car for very long distance driving.

Pointers for solo run:

1. Eat light & avoid NV. reason: easily digestible
2. Don't imbibe alcohol
3. If feeling drowsy, don't push yourself. Park at the side and take a nap. Preferably find a dhaba and relax.
4. Take pit stops and stretch you limbs.
5. Drink lots of water and keep a thermos full of tea/coffee.
6. Carry a 5ltr can of water & another for petrol for emergencies.
7. Carry a tyre inflator & a good jack.

@hv : Got the travel log. Thanks a lot for that. Will help me a long way

Naman,

I think your plan in a Getz is a little too aggressive, you would be pushing limits of safety if you drive alone. The timing would go something like this: If you start @ 2 am you should hit Jaipur around 6-7, Udaipur around , 11- 12, Ahmedabad around 4 pm, Baroda around 5-6 pm, from there till Surat exit, around 9 and Mumbai by 11-12; with best of conditions, non-stop and and some aggressive diriving, you could make it to Mumbai around 8-10 PM.

I would make sense to take a nap around Baroda, i would recommend @ NYAY MANDIR, a family eating joing, which is on the left side of the road after Baroda, lots of space to park and safe too, for about 3 - 4 hours, exactly 94 kms after the A'bad-Baroda expressway EXIT @ Baroda, you'd reach Mumbai probably next day early morning, but safe. You don't have any safety issues anywhere on the road from Delhi to Mumbai.

If you step on it, the sections where you could gain lots time are Jaipur to Udaipur, Shyamaliji till Ahmedaabd, A'bad to Baroda & Surat to Mumbai stretch.

When you reach Chiloda circle @ Ahmedabad, follow the directions to Baroda which will take you thro. the SARDAR PATEL RING ROAD till the Expressway entry, you'd take a right turn into the expressway.

Ping me, even if its late in the night, in case of problems at Ahmedabad, I'd guide you out, M: 09377203000.

I'd myself be driving up to Surat on 7th morning and will be able to give some updates on the condition of the road when I get back.

Happy Driving,

Hey Guys,

Thanks a lot for helping.

@ramky : Thanks for the number. Yeah I know its absolutely stretching to the limit but sometimes you have to let your heart get over the head.

But, at all the times I'll ensure that safety is not compromised meaning will not drive rash but safe fast, will take a nap if feeling drowsy, limb stretching breaks every 250-300 kms.

Have packed up with digestive biscuits and red bulls' drinks along with lays.

Planning to leave tonight at 2 am. Will leave office in a couple of hours and take as much rest as possible. Am so excited with a few butterflies. Lets see how it goes.

Again, thanks a lot people.

hey guys,

completed the solo road trip from gurgaon to mumbai and back.

It was amazing experience from expressways and good roads to bad and worst roads, from high speeds to crawling jams, from rajasthan sun to zero visibility rains, from long straights to the ghats, from smooth tarmac to noisy concrete. Guys, me feels I saw everything on the trip.

Keeping really busy with work this week. Will post a detailed travelogue soon.

Here is an update on NH8 between Bombay and Ahmedabad - I drove to and fro on Tue/Thu

Bombay-Ahmedabad, Oct 21

I drove from Bombay to Ahmedabad, leaving Bombay at 145 am (night) and struggling through traffic jams on Thane-Ghodbunder road (truck breakdown), terrible traffic jams at the Vasai toll naka (after inching along for 20 minutes, did not have to pay toll, since the power went off, knocking off the ticketing machines!).

Surat bypass was peaceful despite the incomplete flyovers, but further down, after crossing teh Tapi, ran into a 10-km long traffic jam - result of a headon 3-truck collision at one of the narrow necks in the under-widening road). Widening work is in full swing, but there are too many turn offs, slowing you down. Road condition is smooth.

Ankleshwar town was mercifully empty, although the North-South direction traffic was tightening. From Ankleshwar to Baroda was dreadfully slow, since the road was reduced to a 2/3-laner with long trains of trucks.

Took 8 hours. Also had a delightful meeting with Dr Bharat Patel on the Baroda bypass.

Ahmedabad-Bombay, Oct 23

This was probably my longest every road journey in this sector - even in the old 2-lane roads, I have not taken more than 9 hours.

I took 10 hours yesterday from Ahmedabad to Bombay/Thane - my best time in this route is 6.5 hours.

This was despite leaving A'Bad at 220 am. Drive till Baroda was smoothy on expressway. Got stuck in Baroda bypass for 15 minutes in a jam.

Drive from Baroda to Ankleshwar was slow but smooth. The old 4-laner is closed, and all traffic is moving for most of the route on 3 lanes, with long unceasing line sof truck traffic, slowing you down and preventing overtaking. Speeds not exceeding 80 kmph.
I got stuck in Ankleshwar town for over 30 minutes in jams. Saved some time by navigating in and out and riding road shoulders.

From Ankleshwar to Surat, the road was fine - there were several sections where 6-laning is complete. Road surface was smooth.

Bypassing Surat was smooth, but for a small traffic jam (this was around 645 am).

I ran into serious trouble on the 4-lane Manor-Virar section just short of Bombay. Nothing to do with road construction - this was a traffic gridlock at an interchange immediately after the Manor toll gate and before Virar. Looks like some construction trucks cut across the road and caused the jam. Incredibly, traffic on both sides of the highway were stuck for 2 HOURS!

Road condition south of Manor is good but has the tar chipped off in several places, so ride quality is not smooth.
Between Virar and Vasai, road shoulders are in bad shape and you hardly have 1 good lane to drive on, slowing down traffic (happily, repair work is on).

Hi,

I am planning to travel from Mumbai to Delhi in my SX4 via Vadodara- Ahemdabad-Udaipur-Jaipur Delhi on 28,29 Sep 09. I need advice on following aspects:
(a) Which route will be better Udaipur-Chittorgarh-Jaipur (via NH 76) or Udaipur - Ajmer- Jaipur (continue on NH8).
(b) I plan to do a night halt in Ahemdabad on 28 Sep 09. Is it "comfortably possible" to do Ahemdabad Delhi in 01 day or it will be prudent to take break in Udaipur.
(c) Can Somebody give me details/ info regarding Army Holiday Home in Udaipur.

Hi Sea Cruiser,

If you plan well, as in start early from Mumbai, you could easily reach Udaipur on day one. For example, even without planning that well, I had started from Kolhapur at 7 am and reached Udaipur at 2330 hours that same day. Kolhapur to Mumbai itself is nearly 350 - 400 kms and the best part is you don't have to run that extra distance. My advice is to start early, say around 5 am and cross the Greater Mumbai area, including Vasai, before the rush hour traffic really starts building up. You should be in Surat by 10 am and reach Ahmedabad by 3 pm, even after taking a couple of breaks on the way for breakfast and lunch. That would leave you in an excellent position to reach Udaipur by 7 pm on day one and that too without stretching yourself too much.

Udaipur-Chittor-Jaipur is in excellent shape right now and I would recommend that to you.

Cheers

You are welcome, Sea Cruiser. About hotels in Udaipur, I for one never stayed on the bypass. I went into the city and found a place called Hotel Madan Palace that was open even around midnight. This hotel can be found very easily because it is on the road that comes into the city from the Ahmedabad highway and goes towards the bus stand. Basically, this can be classified as a main road

Regards,

Hi all,

Thanks to Team BHP and especially Akadian and ramkya1's inputs, and HV Kumar's log books, the plan is set for Mumbai- Delhi trip. The plan is to start from Mumbai at 0600
, reach Baroda at 1130 hrs and take lunch/ afternoon siesta at Baroda. Total passengers in SX4 till Baroda -04. Thereafter my wife and myself start from Baroda at 1330 hrs and reach Udaipur by 1900 hrs.

29 Sep 09- Start from Udaipur at 0700 hrs and via Chittorgarh-Jaipur , reach Delhi by 2100 hrs (considering the traffic jams in Gurgaon). Is there a bypass for Jaipur or one has to enter Jaipur?

I hope so plan is reasonable. Really excited about testing my SX4 on NH8 as its one of the best streches of highway in the country.

Jaipur has at least two bypasses, the Delhi bypass and the Agra bypass. I don't know if there are anymore, though. Two should suffice IMHO as it would divide traffic coming from Udaipur or the west into three groups, one entering the city, one taking the Delhi bypass and one taking the Agra bypass.

Dear BHPians,

I plan to travel by my car (Getz 1.3) from SURAT to NOIDA during 2nd week October ’09. I think the total distance would be about 1150 km.
This will be my second long distance attempt. I had done Surat – Bangalore in June this year.
I will be accompanied by my wife & my 80 year old mother (her 1st time). I intend travelling during daytime only – say 7 AM to 6 PM. This would mean one overnight stopover en-route. In view of my mother’s advanced age, I would need at least 3-4 breaks.
Following are some of my queries to this Forum –
1. Is NH-8 the best option? Any other detour preferred? I want to follow the safest route. There may be some unscheduled stops en-route in view of the old passenger accompanying. What is the latest condition of Surat - Baroda stretch?
2. Where should I take overnight stopover - preferably half-way to the destination? Is it Udaipur? Kindly suggest names of safe places of stay(hotels) along with their contact details, tariff, etc
3. My car is fitted with CNG kit. I understand CNG would be available in Gujarat & Delhi region. Can anyone suggest the locations of CNG filling stations on this route?
4. Any other useful advice would be welcome.

Looking forward to advices.
