What is the average time that we can anticipate in reaching mumbai, what kind of halts can be planned out. Any suggestions?

Hi Kumar,

Further my query of taking alternate route for Udaipur after Jaipur, I have one more query. While coming I found most of the part on Jaipur Delhi was 2 lane (without divider), have I taken any wrong route as People says it is six lane road. Please help me I am leaving from Noida tomorrow.

The entire Jaipur-Delhi stretch is 4-lane, surprised where you had problems.

Thanks Kumar for clarification and help on PM. I was travelling in evening and there was heavy traffic, therefore probably I felt it like 2 lanes but there was no divider thats what I clearly remember. Therefore, I thought I might have taken wrong route.

Nevertheless Thanks for help.

Udaipur would be too early and I would prefer hitting Chittor on day one if I were you.

Cheers
Thanks a lot Akadian,
Yes, I will stopover at Chittor.

The road towards delhi from MIDWAY / NEEMRANA onwards is in bad condition. The post monsoon haven't yet taken place and there are potholes and big patches of missing tarmac.

The road from HR border onwards (Nemrana) is indeed bad, but you can ride the extreme right hand side of the road (towards the centre median) and travel fast. However, I am told that there are excruciating traffic jams in the evenings. Surprisingly, the road towards Jaipur is totally unscathed and not a single pothole!

Hi Sea Cruiser,

Yes I reached on 2nd Oct. I have taken the route as suggested by HVKUMAR i.e. Delhi-Gurgaon-Jaipur-Kishangarh-Chitorgarh-Udaypur-Ahemdabad-Baroda-Mumbai. While coming from Delhi you will find board saying Ajmer (on Delhi - Jaipur haighway) take that ramp which will take you on bridge (which actually crosses the highway, if you go straight then you will enter in Jaipur city that is not required) then travel on that route just before Kishangarh and after toll plaza you will get left for Chitorgarh take that route and reach Udaypur this route is better than Ajmer route. Once you are near to Ahemdabad keep looking for left which takes directly to Ahemdabad - Baroda express way. This expressway is fantastic, I touched speed 160 kmph and travelled on that speed for some time else I was driving at 130 -140. I have taken night halt after udaypur (50-60KMS) but I suggest if you are planning to take night halt and you are near Udaypur and do not want to go uptill Ahemdabad then stop at resorts which are immediately after Udaypur. The hotel at which I stayed was not good. I have started on 1st morning at 7:45 am (was planning to start at 7 but couldn't) and reach Udaypur at 7:00 pm. Then again on 2nd started at 8:00 am and reached Miraroad (Mumbai) at 6:00pm. I got average of 15 kmpl ( it appears not very encouraging but the fault is not with car but my driving I was enjoying pushing and taking Cigarret / coffee break after every 2-2.5 hours). If you are planning for 2 days then it is absolutely comfortable drive, 1 day is quite hectic. Road all along I found absolutely fine.

If you have any further queries please PM me I will try to provide information as much as possible. HVkumar has helped me with route details so you can PM him as well.

The only 2-lane sections are:
- Off Ahmedabad, some distance to Chiloda Circle
- Udaipur bypass
- Wrong road to Chittorgarh (alternative road is 2-laned)

Traditional 2 lane road. Most of the stretch is beautiful and winding hilly roads. Lot of scenic and thoroughly enjoyable.

Route from Indore till Gwalior is dry, but nevertheless route is good. You can stretch at 80KMPH without any problems.

If you planning for a scenic drive with no fuel consumption issues then this route is suggested.

Any additional info, let me know,... I did this route 60 days before in my Hyundai Accent-GVS with one co-driver.
I am taking this very same route for a Gurgaon-Mumbai raodtrip during the last week of Oct 2009 - only adding Mandu and Omkareshwar to the route you've noted since both these places are close to Indore.

Wanted to know what to expect in terms of road conditions, given the late rains this season all over the country.

Also, would you have any tips on off-beat places we could cover on the way? We are making the customary sight-seeing pit stops at Agra (1 day), Gwalior (3/4ths of a day), Mandu-Omkareshwar (1 day).

Thanks!

Hi,

Just back from a drive from Pune - Nashik - Dhule - Indore - Burhanpur - Ahmednagar - Pune

I can tell you about road conditions on the Nashik - Indore route.

The road from Nashik to Dhule is an absolute dream run. Actually from Pimpalgaon to Dhule. Till Pimpalgaon the road has a good amount of traffic. You can easily cruise at about 110 on this road. Traffic is average. Road condition is fantastic. Having said that I had two scary occasions as I came across two potholes on this road. I was doing about 100 then and that was a not-so-pleasant experience. Apart from that, I would say fantastic.
Here a snap of this section.
Pic 1: Nashik - Dhule
mumbai-delhi-route-map-directions-nashik-dhule.jpg

Next, Dhule.
This is a complete mess. I spent a good 45 minutes just crossing Dhule. They are building flyovers to cross the city, but the traffic management was a real chaos. After this fantastic road, the city approach was so very poor. There are road diversions and these side roads are really really bad. Please plan for a good amount of time to get across Dhule

The Dhule MH-border section is average. Its a two lane road, but it is quite wide. The whole section is patched up and therefore not really smooth, however its not too bad either. You should be able to manage 90-100 here.

Now, once you enter MP, this is where you leave your fate to the almighty. As soon as you cross the huge sign which says "Welcome to Madhya Pradesh", you can start praying. The road is next to impossible. You need to cross this ghat called Borghat and this is in shambles. I was stuck here directly facing a huge line of trucks. Here is a snap.
Pic 2: Borghat... better known by me a Bore-ghat
mumbai-delhi-route-map-directions-borghat.jpg

The road from MP-border till Khalghat is BAD!!! Really really bad!!! Its NOT a national highway. Here is another picture which specifies the speed limit.
Pic 3: What National Highway has 20 as its speed limit????
mumbai-delhi-route-map-directions-national-highway-speed-limit.jpg

However, once you reach Khalghat and have used up all your abuses, you get onto this MOST FANTASTIC AND WONDERFUL ROAD. This section of Khalghat to Indore is too good. You can test the speed limit of your car on this road. After the pathetic drive till Khalghat, this was like releasing a caged animal. My car would have thanked me a million times. Breeze away till Indore.

Hope this helps you. Maybe someone can help you out with the other sections i.e. Mumbai - Nashik & Indore - Gurgaon

Hi
I am just back from Mumbai- Delhi (Noida)- mumbai trip through NH 8 in my SX4. The roads were awesome, drive wonderful and overall a great drive. Special Thanks to HV Kumar for his log book entries and all other people on this thread for giving valuable inputs.

The total average time taken was 21-22 hrs for covering the distance of 1480 kms. Sx4 average was 11-12 kmpl. The whole ride was without any trouble and was a enjoyable one. And the best part of the ride was that we came back with "Jazz" our 6 week old Lab.
