If I go via Pune - Satara - which is the best place to take the right turn to Goa ?
Should I stick to 748 after NH 48 ?
We plan to leave Mumbai by early morning (4AM) and hope to be in Goa by early eve (4PM).
Is this possible, should we leave at some other time ?
Are there any historical places of interest that can be visited along the way without deviating much ?
Any other suggestions.
Thanks
We did recently Mumbai - Goa via Pen - Ratnagiri (NH17). it took 12 hours on sedate drive with 2 stops. We started around 5.30 am and were in Margao by 6 pm. Scenic drive but little bit tiring compared to NH4 drive.

As for via NH4 ie Pune - Satara - Kohlapur route is little faster , but both have its own charm.

IMO if you have not driven on NH17 , take this route, you will enjoy the drive. Here is the link of my TL for reference.

If you go Via the NH4 pune satara Kolhapur nipani. then take a right turn at the two restaurants as the twandi ghat begins (Kaveri & satyapalace) to Uttur Ajra Amboli, or go 12 further south to Sankjeshwar and take the turn to Gadinglaj ajra Amboli.
better still check out http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...ur-goa-48.html

Has any one taken the Mumbai Goa Coastal Route recently? ( Not NH 17).
what's the road condition? How many bridges are ready? how meny crossings by Ferry Boat?
I had been on this route 4 years back but had to keep returning to NH17 since many bridges were not ready

I did the full MSH-4 (coastal highway) earlier this month from start to finish, from Terekol Fort (Goa) to Mandhwa Ferry north of Alibag - via Vengurla, Bhogawe, Malwan, Kunkeshwar, Jaitapur, Pawas, Ratnagiri, Ganapatipule, Jaigad, Guhagar, Dapoli, Kelshi, Harihareshwar, Dighi, Murud, Alibag & Diveagar.

Roads were lovely with some rough patches here and there - except for the very bad road sections between Anjarla-Kelshi-Bankot (which section may not be part of the highway, although this road runs all along the coast),

Car Ferry crossings are immaculate and great experiences (good ramps, new boats, punctual timings) at the following places:

Jaigad-Tavasal
Dophave-Dabhol
Bankot-Bhagamandale

The Dighi-Janjira ferry does not take cars, so MSH-4 goes via Mhasla, Pabra & Tamhane to Janjira.

The Mandhwa ferry also does not take cars, so I returned to Bombay via Pen/Panvel.

As far as I could gather, there will be no more bridges since the ferry crossing points are too broad and cannot be bridged.

Starting at 630 am from Terekol, I reached Kelshi for the night and next afternoon was back in Bombay.

stayed only in a beach homestay - very basic, toilet the great open outdoors, use your own blankets, floor is the cot - in Kelshi, but did not stay anywhere else. I was doing just a fast drive over a weekend, starting Friday evening from Bombay and returning on Sunday late afternoon. The MSH-4 deserves more attention, something only a 4-5 day trip can give you - so many lovely unspoilt beaches like Bhogawe, great temples like Kunkeshwar, Harihareswar or Ganapatipule, wonderful bridges, great rural ambience and some of the best views of the sea, mountains & backwaters.

Maybe some photos will illustrate what I mean:

Default Pune-Goa

Planning for goa from 2-5feb with wifey and kid.

Will be taking the usual route of pune-kops-nippani-rt turn-to-ajara-amboli-sawantwadi-goa.

will be starting on 1st feb at evening from mundwa.
now i can either take the swargate-katraj-nh4 (lots of traffic) or the saswad-narayanpur-nh4 route. which route would be good?
open to alternate route too if its for time saving.

Planning for halting some place near/at kolhapur. I need suggestion on this part.

hopefully will get up early and reach goa by for lunch. (check in time is 12)

while returning, will be taking the same route in reverse order. As checkout time is 11am, planning to have lunch at sawantwadi.
Now i had seen some good restaurant reviewed on "chakh le" or "homp", but couldnt remember the name.
can anyone point out good sea-food restaurant?

Also we had taken the fonda route last time and that cost us lots of delays.
(details: Giving it a Try!: First Goa Trip!)

This time, we are planning to take skip the fonda route and take the sawantwadi-amboli-nippani-kops-pune route.

Chetan, I recommend you to take Pune => Sankeshwar => Gadhinglaj => Ajra => Amboli => Sawantwadi => Goa route. I traveled by this route 2 weeks back.

Pune to Sankeshwar is NH4 so no issues and I could keep good speed ~ 80KM/Hr from Gadhinglaj to Amboli excluding the village market area.

My Grande Punto 1.4 gave an FE of 17.5 KMPL (tank full to tank full) to and fro.

If you start at 3 AM and keep an hour as buffer for breaks, you should touch Goa by 12 noon.

Sai International near Kolhapur is a good place to halt for snacks/lunch/dinner. Though its a little bit on costlier side, its super clean and is on the same side as you will be driving or else go to MCD for which you will have to take a U turn.

Drive safe and enjoy your trip.

So you are suggesting no stopover?

Naah, 3 AM to 12 noon = 9 Hrs. So 8 hrs of drive and 1hr for breaks is enough.
With a kid on-board may be a challenge?

Not really. last time i did manage to start by 5:30/6am and reach by 2, which included lots of break. we did spend lot of time in amboli ghat near the temple. Also it was raining heavily that time, so was driving cautiously.

However I am bit shaky for driving around 3-4am...
so thats why was planning for stopover.

All in all, now i think starting at 4am (that way i can beat my fear) would make it possible to reach by 1pm.
