Default Weekend trip to Chikmagalur

Hi all.... I was planning to going to Chikmagalur for this weekend - 29th-30th. I have some broad directions Bangalore - Neelamangala - Hassan - Belur - Chikmagalur, but more dump (landmarks etc.) will be helpful. Also is there any better route? How is the road condition - important as while coming back will be driving in the evening when it may be dark.

We plan to leave at 4:30 am to reach Chikmagalur by 10:00 am - should be achievable from what I have heard.

Also what are the must-go places in Chikmagalur - something that I can manage in 1.5 days.

thanks

I am just back from this trip.

Our route was Bangalore--> Nelemanagala--> Hasan--> Belur--> Chikkamangalore, while return from KemmanuGundi --> Birur-->Kadur-->Tumkur-->Bangalore.

If your destination is Kemmanugundi, then I would suggest Via Tumkur, as the roads are good throughout, as the Chikkamangalore and Kemmanugundi road(around 25kms) is really bad.

If you drive early morning, and exit bangalore before 5AM, it should take around 4 -5 hrs of drive.

regards,
-manju

On NH48 after you cross Hassan, there is a right turn for Belur, that is the deviation from NH48 towards belur....take it

About Chickmagalur to Kemmangundi, there are two routes, first is via Muliyangiri/Baba Budan giri and the other is the Chikmagalur-Lingadahalli-Kadur road, you have to take a right after Lingadahalli as far as I remember. When I went last time(Mar/April'07) the 2nd route(via Lingadahalli) was in good condition. But after Lingadahalli turn towards Kemmangundi the road is not good(but that's around 10km) . But the other route via Muliyangiri was in very bad shape in quite a few sections. But both the routes are scenic.

Road is good all the way except that it is a 2 way road - so driving at night may reduce speed quite a bit. I had been there last week. There is a Kamat after CR Patna (about 5 to 10 km after CR patna on the way to Chikmagalur).

Mulayangiri is a good place. One strech is not good - a few places there is no road but no potholes as such. Just mud and gravel. So be careful while braking.

Rathnagiri is a small park kind of a thing (botanical gardens type of thing). Good around evening if going with family. Sunset was visible from here (so if you have clear sky, may get a good sunset).

Datta Peetha (temple/mosque) over the Baba budan giri hills is famous for its unique religious feature. The drive to this is pretty good over the hills. Further to Datta Peetha, you can drive a couple of kilometers to go to Manikyadhara which has a small falls where people take bath. More than the falls, i thought the view from this high point was good.

Hi Friends,

We are planning for a trip to chikmagalur and surrounding areas in mid July'08. Would be very helpful, if anyone can give latest update on
1) Road conditions (via Hassan or via Tumkur)
2) Good/Decent hotels to stay in chikmagalur
3) Places to see around chikmagalur (ofcourse we are planning for kemmanagundi)

We plan to stay for around 2 days in chikmagalur, setting aside 1 separate day for up & down daytime travel from Bangalore.

Thanks in advance.

Until next time,
-Ravi

Road condition is very good all the way from Bangalore - CKM.
Some of the hotel to stay are
Taj Garden retreat, Planter's court, soundarya residency, Rajmahal vilas.
You can also try some homestays around CKM

Do not ever think about staying in the Government Guest House in Kemmanagundi - badly maintained rooms, bad service. We had to manage an entire night without power with our 1 year old baby.

The road from Chickmagalur to Kemmanagundi was in a very bad shape last year October. Especially, the 40-50 km stretch after Planters Court which is a climb.

Bangalore - Chickmagalur via Hassan was good.

You forgot The Serai bro , IMO its one of the best places to stay while in CKM. I know it's a little expensive but worth every penny.

Folks,

Opening this thread once again. When last I visited Chikmagalur (2006), I remember there was a diversion to Belur, some 20km before Hassan.

Can some one point me to that? I specifically remember that I did not touch Hassan at all and the road was also very good.

Did you drive past the MCF in Hassan ? Coz AFAIK thats the only other route which takes you straight to Halebidu and en-route you can deviate to Belur town.

Guys, planning trip to Chikmangalur during the 2nd Oct weekend. Which route is better currently, via Hassan or Tumkur?
Also any pointer towards good staying options would be greatly helpful!
