Any quick update on the Gundulpet-S.Bathery-Thamarassery Ghat stretch? Are the roads in good condition? Any wild life sightings these days in the forest section?

Should be in excellent condition all through. Chance of wildlife spottings are low. Maybe a few herds of deer and/or monkeys.

I am planning a drive to Coonoor this weekend. Would start Saturday early morning. Which is the best route? Would like to avoid bad stretches, Just redid the suspension . To avoid the Dassera traffic - should I take the Kanakpura route?

Thanks,
Glen

Both Mysore and Kanakapura routes merge at Gundlupet and you will need to traverse the entire length of the highway right through Ooty which can be painful and slow.
Instead go on the hosur-Salem route NH 7 and NH 47 and turn off at Avinashi towards Annur-mettupalayam and reach coonoor directly.
Needless to say start early and avoid the holiday traffic.

Now that we know the Hosur Road stretch is open, does the Chamrajanagar > Sathyamangalam > Mettupalayam route make sense? Is it any better than going Salem > Avinashi > Mettupalayam route?

I just checked with someone at a resort in Ooty, this morning ... they say that the Niligiri checkpost is allowing only buses in. Cars are still not being allowed as of now.

Sathyamangalam route is very scenic. I would prefer this route any day over Salem route as long as the road conditions are good.

I have put some pics here,
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/long-t...ml#post4000318

And I think the route via Bandhipur is shorter and the standard route to Ooty. Is it at this check-post they are still not allowing KA vehicles?

Thanks NPV! yes, that is my backup option. Its been a while that I wanted to try the Satyamangalam route. Was looking for info on the road condition and any hinderance to vehicle movement.

Any further news on this? Mine is not a KA vehicle though. If there is a blockade, then I will have to pursue the Salem route.

I came back from Ooty to Bangalore yesterday (5th Oct) and crossed Masinagudi/ Bandipur Border around 12 Noon. As of that moment, TN Vehicles were not being allowed into KA and vice versa. Since mine was a KA vehicle entering into KA from TN side, I was allowed after hearing someone earful from an TN cop saying I took a risk by being in TN with a KA vehicle. Took Gundlupet, Chamrajnagar, Kanakapura, Bangalore route and did not want to venture through Mandya.

Private buses and those of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) plied from Sathyamangalam (in Erode district), Tirupur and Coimbatore to Mysuru via Chamrajnagar from this afternoon, police said.

In Nilgiri's district, about 100 lorries crossed into Karnataka from Kakkanalla checkpost, they said.

A few lorries with Karnataka registration numbers besides cars and other vehicles were provided police escort up to the border, in Pulinjure.

Kakanallah Checkpost in the Niligiris finally opens.

At Udhagamandalam, the Kakanallah border checkpost, which had been closed to both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu vehicles for more than three weeks, was finally opened to traffic without any restrictions on Thursday.

Police initially allowed only Karnataka-registered commercial vehicles such as lorries into the Nilgiris. After ensuring that there were no untoward incidents or acts of vandalism committed against the vehicles, public transport and private vehicles were also allowed inside. Tamil Nadu registered vehicles were also allowed to cross the border into Karnataka.

Mysuru in 90 minutes by 2019. Yes!

The process of converting the ever-busy Bengaluru-Mysuru Road to a six-lane highway was set into motion on Tuesday with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issuing a final notification for acquiring lands.

With the notification issued, the officials hope to start the groundwork which includes tolled six-laning of the 128-km stretch between NICE Road Junction, off Kengeri (near Bengaluru) to Mysuru Ring Road (near Columbia Asia Hospital Junction, Mysuru), with toll-free two-lane service roads on either sides all along the stretch.

Once the six-lane access-controlled road becomes operational, the travel time between the two cities can be reduced to almost half the present three hours it takes which goes up to six hours during peak hours.

Converting the existing highway to 6 lane is not going to help in the long term. As long as the route passes through all the towns and villages along the way the road is going to remain crowded and unsafe as it has been over the last few years. Unless the plan is build bypasses for all the towns as it is done on the GQ, six lane BLR-MYS road will be crowded again within 6-8 months of launch.

The old plan of the BMIC road avoiding all towns and villages and completely barricaded is the only viable long term solution IMO. This must be built on the lines of the Mumbai - Pune or Baroda - Ahmedabad expressways.

Planning to go to Ooty next weekend. Will take the usual route Bangalore, Mysore, Bandipur and 36 hairpin bends to Ooty. Will be going to Ooty after 6/7 years. So a few questions
1. Can I do both to and fro on this route? Any one way restriction?
2. Any effect of Cauvery problem even now?
3. How is the road? I plan to start at 5am and hoping to reach by 11 with a breakfast stop. Is that doable?
4. Any thing else that I should know

Thanks in advance

Roads are good, currently no issues due to cauvery, but you may not be allowed to take the 36 hairpins route on the way back. Usually on holidays and long weekends, cops do not allow vehicles in the downhill route.

If that happens, take the Gudalur route, it is fine now after it was asphalted few months ago.

Since you're starting early, take Mysore Road route, stop at Kamat Madhuvan near Mysore palace at the beginning of the Najangud road. There is some construction work on the Najangud route but should be manageable.

Alternate route is via Kanakapura-chamarajanagar-gundlupet in which case you can stop at Nijaguna, Chamarajanagar.
