Im coming from Malleshwaram, can someone give me the directions how to take the route? Thanks !! Is the road completed upto Mysore city?
From Malleshwaram, imo it would be easier to come through the regular route through basaveshwaranagar, vijaynagar and connect to mysore road and onwards to kengeri and mysore.

There is no NICE road to mysore.

I second that, from malleswaram it is much easier to connect via vijaya nagar and raja rajeswari nagar and hit kengeri

If the route the Masinagudi is on, you can reach Ooty at least 1-2 hours earlier as the route via Gudalur is at least 30Km more.

As regards to the third option, do note that teh roads are good, bui you dont have the luxury of hotels and clean rest rooms that you would find on the Mysore road.
This option is definitely scenic.
Great! Thanks for all the responses.

Is there a good chance of any wild life sightings on any of these routes? My kids are excited and at the same time terrified at the opportunity of coming face-to-face with few tuskers on the road. Any experience in these lines from anybody on these routes?

Regards
Rex

Wild life spotting is possible only around Bandipur. So either any option you take,
the Bandipur one is the common, where you have maximum chances of sighting wild life.

Today, i did this route:

Electronics city-kanakapura-malavalli-Bannur-Mysore(palace)-Gundulupet-Ooty-Coimbatore.

Kanakapura road(NH 209) is not what is described as smooth, but it is decent with limited traffic.

Malavalli to Mysore is all about testing the car's suspension. A lot of bone-jarring moments.

It is an irony that from Bannur onwards, every 2/3 km has a signboard with Mysore palace and Museum and all that, but once we enter Mysore, there is no proper signboard(not that it is too difficult to assume the road with directions).

After the TN section, though road is smooth, there are hidden potholes(hidden in the sense, hidden by the shadows from the trees) that are capable of swallowing half a wheel!!

A KL-SRTC bus was doing awe-inspiring cornering in those winding roads!

Ooty was the usual, with slightly lesser traffic.

Ooty to Mettupalayam had the worst traffic, but much have been said about it.

Next time, i will take the Chamarajnagar-Sathy route.

Me, my wife and a friend couple are plannig to take a trip to the jungles of Bandipur and Mudumalai this month. We wish to stay as close to the forest area as possible to enjoy nature and wildlife. Can anybody suggest some good accomodation options? All the resorts suggested by google are in Masinagudi which looks outside the forest are in the map. Found Abhayaranyam FRH in google map, but could not find any feedback on it. Can anyone please share their experiences.

You can also try this:

Wild Valley In Mudumalai | Wildlife Sanctuary India

I stayed at this place couple of weeks back. Place is good. Food is average for the price they charge

Cheers

Thanks Ampere and Pareshraheja. I'll be driving from Bangalore to Mudumalai via Mysore. Can you please tell me is the road inside forest area a steep uphill road? I do not have much driving experience in hilly roads and no experinece in negotiating HPBs. I wanted to explore Pykara lake going via Gudalur (earlier posts in this thread talks how the road to Ooty through Masinagudi is steep with a lot of HPBs). Is that road safe for driving? I want to avoid HPBs as far as possible.

- Its much before the climb
- Towards towards Masinagudi at Theppakadu. (In other words take the regular to Ooty via the 36 haripin bends).

- Once you cross Masinagudi, go about 1-2 km, where you should see the board for the place indicating to take right.

Hello ankan,

If you want to avoid HPB than take a right turn from Madumalai towards Gudalur and it will be around 70 Kms to Ooty and you get to see pykaara falls and also couple of other viewpoints.

If you take a left from Madumalai via Kalatty/masinagudi than you will have toughtime as it has 36 HPB but the valley view is awsome. its half the distance. If you are not confident please avoid as the road is also a bit narrow.

The point where you need to deviate is just 4~5 KMS from the Tamilnadu checkpost.

Thanks Ampere and Vinkum. One query : the KSRTC buses that plies between Blr-Ooty & Mysore-Ooty, do they take the Masinagudi route or the Gudalur route? I am planning to trail a bus so that I do not lose my way (I have heard that its difficult to get Vodafone mobile phone signal once you enter forest, so I am doubtful about accessing google maps)

Buses take the longer route i.e. via Gudalur.

Also Deep Jungle Home is on this same route. When you reach the intersection of the roads (one that goes via Masinagudi and the other Gulalur) you need to travel 10 km towards the direction of Gudalur and you will be able to locate this place.

Cheers

right the volvo (even the other buses) take the gudalur road. Masinagudi stretch is not drivable for a volvo.

I have been here a year ago. they stay isnt comfortable if you're with family. Food is good...and the approach to this place isnt tarred. You might want to go real slow if you love your tyres and under-belly of the car.

My lancer made it with few scraps on the under-belly.
