I'll be going to Coonoor on 22nd of June with 3 of my friends. Need to know how's the road condition? And how long will it take to reach there? What is the ideal time to start from Bangalore?

Also, do let me know if there's anything interesting that we can explore on our way to Coonoor. I'm a hardcore foodie, so kindly suggest where all can I treat my tastebuds to something sensational.

Thanks in advance.

Coonoor will take you at least 7 hours to reach with one coffee break. Roads are pretty good save a few patches which are not perfect. Mind the traffic from Ooty to Coonoor.
Ideal time to start from BLR is 6 am. 5.30 am if you guys are up to it! The idea is to cross Mandya before 9 am. Tank up at Shell on Mysore road before Rajrajeshwari nagar.
If you like North Karnataka fare, stop at the Janpadaloka Kamat. This comes at approx 55km mark from the Mysore road flyover.

Thanks. We're planning to start by 4:30 (which means 5:30 :P). Don't like Lokaruchi Kamat at all. I prefer stopping at Bidar Tatte Idly shops. Anything after Mysore which I shouldn't miss. I am a big (literally) foodie.

Coonoor is a great place. Make sure you have the brunch served at the Taj gateway in coonoor. They have a great setting for the buffet and its not that costly I guess. There is also a Taj savoy in ooty on the road that leads to ooty from gudalur. Food at that place is great as well. There is a person called Prakash who can help. W visited these places in May.
Few other hotels in ooty are Nahar, Udupi (not as good).

Have fun and drive safe as I think it's raining in those areas.

Cheers

Found it to be very good.

I tasted Nahar's works first hand when I visited Ooty in November. The experience was documented in that travelogue I think. The menu screenshot was also put up somewhere in that thread.

+1. Wood-fired pizzas are their speciality and service was also very quick. Every single item we ordered at that place was lip-smackingly delicious, although everything was not authentic Italian fare, some were Indianized items . Still no reason to look away. I'd gladly recommend it to anyone looking to try out the place.

Only 2 spoilers, one for carnivores and another for BHPians :
- The menu is fully vegetarian, so the non-veggies have to be contented only with Paneer .
- The place is set on a busy commercial street, so if you self-drive to Nahar's sidewalk cafe and love your car, good luck finding safe parking space.

I recently did a gudalur trip via chamarajnagar- You can read about it here- http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...ml#post3132317

I have done the kalahatti ghat in honda city. certainly doable.

I just came back from Gudalur on Sunday and drove via Gundlupet-Chamarajnagar- Malavalli-Kanakapura as usual. What a pleasure it was!! The road condition is excellent through out. This is the best option for anyone travelling to Ooty or Wayanad.

Four KMs after Teppakadu is in bad condition. Low GC vehicles to be careful. Rest is fine road.

We found a decent restaurant in Kanakapura. It is called "Ratna Upahara". It is bang on the main road. It is next to small circle where the road curves. The food was very good. We packed idlis/vadas and had it just after the town. It is the best thing to do. You can also eat it in the restaurant but it is little cramped.

Had been to Kanakapura on Sunday, tried Vasu Hotel which is also bang on the main road, has a very small door but opens out into a large space inside. Excellent idli, vada and Dosa (very popular). They have seating along one wall and rest is Darshini type. Seemed like everyone in the town was inside this place

Good to know there are more options in Kanakapura. There is also a Srinivas Sagar further along the road on the left side (driving from B'lore) which is where I normally stop for hot idlies/ dosas/ vadas. Rest room is also usable.

Thanks for sharing your experience, opens up another option
Came to know from a friend that Vasu Hotel is one of the oldest and most popular in the town and they have another branch near the road leading to Sangam.

While having breakfast, I realised that I'd eaten at Vasu Hotel almost 15 years ago on a bike trip to Mekedatu. At that time the building resembled a house and was located on the much narrower NH209!

I tried this place some time back based on someone's recommendation on this forum. The food was tasty, but I found the place to be too crowded for my liking, so never tried it again.
