Help me Travel to ooty by Car

Hi BHPians,

i am planning to visit Ooty by 11th or by this month end by car.
Can you please give me the correct routes to ooty from chennai.
Also if i leave by 6 am will i be able to reach ooty by night. Only two of us know driving out of five.

The route option could be as under. Distance in approximate kms. From Vellore to Salem is state highway. Salem to metupalyam should be good road now. ooty roads are good enough at metupalyam side. total distance would be 520 kms in all. Start early at 5 am to reach ooty by 5 p.m. at average of 50 kmph.

Chennai - Kanchipuram 71 kms
Kanchipuram - Vellore 72 kms
vellore - tirupatthur 50 kms
tirupattur - salem 150 kms
Salem - Uttangarai 56 kms
uttangari - bhavani sagar 40 kms
bhavani sagar - mettupalyam 35 kms
mettupalyam- kotagiri-coonoor - ooty - 45 kms

did the ooty trip almost 2 years back. Take the vellore-krishnagiri-dharmapuri-salem-cbe route. Saves you a lot of fuel & saves your car the torture too. Should take about 8-10 hrs depending on the breaks you take. 1 driver is enough for this drive. Have a good trip.

Nope, I disagree esteem :-) the Salem-Cbe route is a roundabout and is being 4 laned. Its not the ideal route either.

Surprise's return route is the most ideal.

I would personally take Chennai - Krishnagiri (on the GQ) - Dharmapuri - Thoppur (take right towards Mettur) - Mechari - Mettur - Ammapettai (take right towards Sathy) - Andiyur - Athani - Sathyamangalam - Mettupalayam - Kotagiri - Ooty.

Expect 4 laning along Krishnagiri - Thoppur (about a distance of 50 odd kms). Otherwise you will have excellent driving conditions. Its GQ from Chennai - Krishnagiri.

Ammapettai is on the Mettur - Bhavani road approx 20 kms from Mettur. Take a right here towards Andiyur - Athani - Sathy. These are state roads but in good condition.

If you do not want to do this, you can go Mettur - Bhavani - Chithode (take a right here) - Gobichettipalayam - Sathyamangalam. However this is a roundabout of around 30 odd kms.

Chennai - Krishnagiri - 3 to 4 hrs.
Krishnagiri - Mettur - 2.5 - 3 hrs.
Mettur - Sathy - 2 hrs
Sathy - Ooty - 3 hrs.

Suggest you to following what csenthil as suggested. not only you will bypass coimbatore and NH47 but also traffic. In addition you will enjoy some nice scenic views as well.

Start at 3AM, so that you can cover Krishnagiri very fast. You can reach ooty by lunch then.
