I might postpone the trip to another long weekend. My friend ditched me in the last moment. Though I still want to go ahead I dont want to spend the whole travel in driver seat.

@VMG, how about you?

Option I is better. Its the shorter route. A little bit of bad patches after Mettur. But I remember them being patched up when I went last.

Sankagiri - Bhavani is also being four laned. Anyways Bhavani - Perundurai is also being 4 laned.

Option I again as option II till Avanashi is being four laned. I remember reading somewhere that Option I is good. Must be a post by hvkumar.

Atlast went to Coorg(my original plan) during the long weekend.

Started from chennai at 6.15 AM morning. Reached bangalore electronic city at 11.45 had a break of 30 mins in between.

From electronic city to Mysore road it took solid 2.15 hrs. There was an accident that day in Mysore road(A bus ran over a little girl, bad road and irresponsible driving. Poor little girl, RIP) and some violance resulted in huge traffic in Mysore road.

Reached Mysore at 5.00 PM(Had a lunch break of 1 hr near bidadi).

Overnight stay in Mysore.
Morning darshan in Chamundi hills and left Mysore after lunch at around 3.00 PM.

Road until Kushal nagar was great(Except a bad stretch while crossing periyapatna). After Kushal nagar, road varies from Worst to decent.
Rached Madikeri at 6.30 PM. (with one break of 30 mins).

Return on sunday(4th May) morning at around 10 AM and reached chennai at 2 AM midnight. With breaks in Dubare elephant camp(2 hrs) Kushalnagar(1hr), Mysore (30m), Mandya(30m), Hosur(30m) & Ambur 1hr.

Total distance in trip meter - 1490
Mileage 14KMPL (Mostly with AC).

Thanks TBHP for providing most of the info I needed.

We're considering a drive from Chennai to Erode this Saturday & return on the same day & have sorted out the following routes in the increasing order of distance & time. Pls let me know the road conditions & the preferable route. We don't mind taking a bus either, provided we can reach by the same day. Tks.

1. Chennai - Vizhupuram - Veppur - Attur - Salem - Erode (would like to know the road conditions from Veppur to Erode)
2. Chennai - Vellore - Vaniyambadi - Thirupattur - Dharmapuri - Bhavani - Erode (would like to know the road conditions from Thirupattur to Erode)
3. Chennai - Krishnagiri - Salem - Erode (would like to know the road conditions from Salem to Erode)

Stick to Krishnagiri - Salem - Erode. On any day the most sensible option. I doubt bus would be a feasible option for you because it would take atleast 8 hours one way.

Hi aargee,

1. Chennai - Vizhupuram - Veppur - Attur - Salem - Erode (would like to know the road conditions from Veppur to Erode)

This route is still pathetic. Don't take this route. We recently made the trip to chennai-Erode.. But we took Sankagiri-Tharamangalam route. But I don't suggest it.. Stick to the standard one to avoid the confusions.

Thanks @pypkmsrikanth, @ampere & @jebs for the suggestion.
Out of curiosity, how about this route?

You dont gain anything through through the Tirupathur route. By the way, this is the route which you take to go to Yelagiri.

You save ~30Km and trade-off 4L.
Not worth it.

As we near the weekend, the plans are changing little & I'm not sure if it can be done in a single day & hence this question.

This is our plan now Chennai - Erode - Tiruppur - Chennai. Google says nearly 15 hours drive for the entire drive. This means, without stopping for food, toll or any coffee breaks. We're planning to start by Saturday 4:00 in the morning & return to home the same night. I'm confused if this plan is a practical one or does it require to drive like maniac (which I don't want to). Pls help.

No point driving back on the same day. You can come back the next.
Consider this: There is a kid on board!

Oh!!! Sorry Ampere, this is not a family trip, just myself & a friend. Both of us were planning to ride with a motorcycle each, but then, he has a night shift that gets over only by Saturday early morning & hence the car.

We prefer coming back on the same day to get some rest, feel of the weekend with family.

The answer to the question would depend on how much time would you be spending in Erode & Tiruppur. Lets assume you start at 4 in the morning in which case you would reach Erode at around 10 / 10:30 AM. Erode to Tiruppur should take you an hour and fifteen minutes max.

On the return Avinashi to Chennai should not take more than 7 hours of sedate driving. So effectively you would have to drive for a total of about 14 / 15 hours. Depending on your work at Erode and Tiruppur and the possibility of taking a decent break there it is certainly doable. I don't think you need to drive like a maniac for the above timings. If you drive like a maniac you could possibly shave off an hour from both the trips.
