Default Hyderabad to Yanam

Hi Guys....

Has anyone done Hyderabad to Yanam?

My friend informed me that Yanam is somewhere near Rajahmundry, and can be covered in a loong weekend in car.

I just checked out Yanam on maps.live.com and found the route to be -

Hyd -> Suryapet ->Khammam -> Rajahmundry -> Yanam

I have never travlled on this route and wanted opinions and suggestions from TBHPians....

Thanks and Regards

Yanam is part of Pondicherry State and 30 kms south of Kakinada on NH 214. I have not been tyo Yanam from tyhe Rajahmundry side, but only from the Eluru (NH5) and Kakinada side (NH214).

To come from Kakinda, take NH214 all the way.

When coming from Vijaywada/Eluru side, turn off NH5 at Alamaru (165 kms from Vijaywada, 100 kms from Eluru), and go via Mandapetya and Ramachandrapuram to Yanam (approximately 50 kms).

If you come from Rajahmundry, come south on NH5 (towards Vijaywada/Eluru), and turn off at Dowlaiswaram and go to Ramachandrapuram (approximately 60 kms).

No idea what is attractive about Yanam, but fuel is very cheap here!!!

Does anyone else have anything to say about Yanam? Planning a drive, and would like to know if it is worth the drive from Madras !!

NO, I did not see anything interesting in Yanam - not counting the lush green countryside.

I rode from Hyderabad to Yanam around august in 2003.
Was a beautiful ride.

But as mentioned there is nothing in Yanam as such.
Except that the entire countryside is beautiful.

Riding early morning with the river on one side, huts on the other and thousands of coconut trees. Heaven.

My friends and I, 3 in all stayed in a hotel that was being constructed. There was no flooring at all. Just sand. The bed was as big as the room with maybe a feet of space on three sides. We paid 100 for a day. But who cared about such things.

Then we took off in the morning and decided we wanted to see the Bay of Bengal.
Kept on riding and riding and started getting lost.
Then one of us noticed a sign board for some lighthouse.

Lighthouse means a beach.
We then started riding in that direction.
The road gave way to a kuccha road and then to a swamp.
We could see the lighthouse. Just did not realise how far away it was. Kept on riding and finally after a long stretch of the swamp we reached it.
Could not continue riding as the slush was too much and getting deeper.

I remember crossing a rope bridge on the way.
It kept swaying all the time and the fear of falling made it awesome.

Then we saw the river again.
Could not find the beach.
This was a wide stretch of the water. At least a km wide.
We took of our clothes and jumped into the water.

Then one of us had this insane idea that this is alluvial soil. I hope that is what it was. This is supposed to be good for the skin. So we smeared ourselves with it. Was so funny. and then a boat passes. I wonder what those people taught of 3 monkeys in the water covered in clay and waving and dancing in the water.

Was one of the best days in my life.

Well, apart from fuel, even booze should be cheap there, as it is a Union Territory.
I remember lots of my pals at Vizag making a beeline for Yanam when NTR introduced prohibition in A.P. in the 90s
