Bangalore - Madurai on NH7 all the way is excellent.

Between Salem and Namakkal there is a Arya Bhavan on the left which is good. Other options are GRT Grand in Salem or the A2B's inside Bharat Petroleum fuel station campuses at Shoolagiri & Thoppur.

Palani stay - recommend Tiruppur Lodge - it's excellent and they have a very good restaurant too.
Alternatively, Shubham Lodge - definitely not as good as Tiruppur lodge.
NOTE: For Kodai - When going from Blr, from NH7 near Dindigul you can take the NH45 towards Bathlakundu which is good. From Bathlakundu you need to take another right turn and head to Kodai on the ghat section, again excellent roads.
However, since you are going to Kodai from Madurai, you may not need to come back all the way near Dindigul to take NH45, instead there should be another way to reach Bathlakundu via NH49 - this part I'm not sure of the road conditions/route so others should be able to help.
For Kodaikanal - Palani I'm not sure of conditions/route. However, the Palani route from Dindigul is good - it's almost like a parallel road/turn as the NH45 Bathlakundu one from NH7.
Also suggest you take a look at the maps to understand what I'm talking about (NH7 intersections with NH45, NH49 and the Palani road) if it's not very clear.
Hope this helps.

No need to take N49. Come back on NH7 till Kodai Road and divert from there to Bathlagundu.
Its much better that way than the NH49 Usilampatti-Batlagundu option.
I wont say NH49 option is worse, but when you have a 4L till Kodai Road, why not take it.

Kodai-Palani ghat road is open and functional I think.

Actually, while going south, I am directly going to Madurai (stay in Madurai) and then onto Kodaikanal.

I'd like to know how GOOD and SAFE is the Kodai to Palani route - or should I avoid that route?

Thanks in advance.

The other costlier alternative being Vels Court

Kodai Palani route is now good,I dont think there are any problems as of now on that route. If it is to come back to Bangalore, then I would suggest that you take Kodai-Dindigul-Salem route as that would be a faster option since it is 4laned all the way from Dindigul.

The comment on NH49 was for the Madurai-Kodai drive. Here is route link:
Madurai, Tamil Nadu to Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu - Google Maps

On the Kodai-Palani ghat section: I think its safe. Here is TL which I just saw:

Google Maps shows me a way (from Madurai to Kodai) via Pallapatti, Silukkuvarpatti and Nilakottai, and onward to Vathalagundu.

Yes that is the route. But locating Pallapatti may be difficult on the 4L.
Kodai-Road would be easier. Hence the suggestion.

You will ultimately join the same road that you were referring to!

I think Kodai Road-Vathalagundu is the route buses take for Kodai from Madurai. I remember signages on both towns for going either way. Vathalagundu-Dindigul has quite a few diversions on the way (4-laning ?). It would add like 30 km if you are going all the way to Dindigul (which isnt worth IMO).

Kodai-Palani is pretty good and safe too.

This tread definitely lives up to Team-bhp standards and is as insightful as always.

So far have decided on the route:- iblur bus stop to Country Club India | Country Club Kodaikanal - Google Maps

Plan to leave Bangalore at 5am today and destination is Country Club Valley Vista in Kodai. 2 nights 3 days trip. Will provide more updates once I return.

You can take the regular Salem option. Its fast. Unless you want to enjoy a ride through the fields.

Many thanks and that indeed came in late. I returned last night from that route and I must say the road conditions are much much better.

While going I lost a lot of time in between Bhavani & Kodaikanal due to extremely bad roads. The ALTO with 4 people onboard took the worst hit in those roads. While returning I was on SH 152 which is maintained almost like a NH.

And regarding roads I was extremely angry about that the fact that you have to pay 40 bucks as soon as you enter Kodaikanal as Road Toll and immediately I was greeted to the worst roads I have ever seen in South India.

On the contrary the trip was although short yet awesome. Kodaikanal is a truely beautiful place with amazingly helpful and friendly locals. Too tired to write anymore for the time being.

Further to the above the locals at Palani suggested that instead of returning to Palani I should have come straight to Ezhuvanampatti junction through Kodai Ghat Road (SH 156) - then take the NH and eventually take the SH 152 onwards from Dindigul.

Can anyone confirm on this route?
