Default Update on Manali - Rohtang Pass road conditions

Update on Manali - Rohtang Pass current road conditions:
  • My newly wed friend who is currently in Manali advised me yesterday that Manali - Rohtang Pass is closed beyond Marhi. This is due to landslides blocking the road. They were turned back from Marhi en route to Rohtang Pass.
  • My friend's brother and his gang (the same group who set the Limca book record of fastest drive from East to West in a Mahindra Xylo - thread here: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...est-drive.html) have embarked on a trip to Leh in a convoy of 10 brand new cars. They were also stranded at Marhi yesterday but could not come back to Manali, as my friend told me on the phone today. The good part of this trip is - it comes all sponsored

Day before yesterday, my friend drove across Rohtang and reached Jispa for the night. Having left Manali at 5 am, he was delayed by landslide clearance work for 2-3 hours but finally got through. He reported excellent roads after Gramphoo (roads relaid), but the delay before Manali took its toll - he covered 150 kms the whole day to reach Jispa only by 830 pm.

There are heavy rains in the Lahaul Valley also, all the way to Jispa.

He left Jispa yesterday morning, intending to reach Leh by night - waiting to hear from him of his arrival at Leh!

Default Get set go (almost)!!

Folks, finally the day seem to have almost arrived. Embarking on the trip to Ladakh tomorrow evening.

Harish: We are driving two cars - an Innova & an Indica Vista. Plan to leave Delhi by 8:00 pm tomorrow (13 Aug) & drive all the way to Keylong for our first night halt (saving us the day otherwise we would have spent in Manali).

Help required: Can anyone please provide me contacts of good accommodation at Keylong? Might reach there quite late in the evening. Therefore, would want to book in advance.

Thanks!

If you leave Delhi at 8pm then you reach Manali by 8am easily. After that its a 6 hour run to keylong unless you get stuck in a jam at Marhi/Rohtang.
So if there is no jam, you reach keylong well before evening.

Hope the rains don't upset our plan. Thanks Tanveer!

Thanks anumpmathur! Given that there is a fair risk of rains playing havoc with our plans we will book the place after reaching Manali and on learning the road conditions ahead.

Just been back from being Leh'd

Quick updates:
  • Marhi - Rohtang La road was a disaster
  • Staying overnight at Sarchu was medically unsound decision
  • Several problems with one of the cars (Innova) including getting stuck at Pagal Nullah (enroute to Pangong Tso - both ongoing and on return) and cops
  • Crossing Zoji La at midnight was outright scary!

Bottom line: A wonderful trip. A gamut of experiences of a lifetime

What were your times like ?And overnight halts?

Yes, Zoji La is a terrible place to be in after dark - have done it too in total darkness and it is the scariest drive you can have.

Is Pagal Nullah still bad news?

Our planned schedule went completely awry. The actual night stays were at: Manali (due to non-availability of new tyres for Innova at Mandi / Kulu / Manali), Keylong (due to 6 hours it took to get from Manali to other side of Rohtang La), Sarchu (my ignorance - could have easily gone as far as Pang for tent acco), Leh.

Return: Lamayuru (evening), Kargil (10:30 pm) but one of the cars overshot and reached Kargil via Batalik. They said road via Batalik is much much better. Left Kargil at around midnight and drove through Drass, Zoji La (2:00 - 3:30 AM as far as I can remember).

Pagal Nullah was really bad. The Innova got stuck while going and coming back though the water level wasn't too high. Here's a pic
