these are the best scenic routes I've driven on.
roads in idukki come close 2nd.
Now have to try wayanad and re-do the above 3 routes again, now that i have a better car and a Digital camera.

When I saw this thread, the drive which immediately came to my mind was this one. I always drive to Mussourie via Chamba-Dhanaulti to enjoy this scenic road.

Please see my mail below:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...hyderabad.html (Need Help for my trip to Mahabaleshwar from Hyderabad)

Road conditions will be good all the way to Solapur. Expect some bad roads (thanks to rains, now it is good) in Pandharpur-Sangli secttion.

Phenomenal pictures there, anupmathur and unni.ak. May I contribute this?:

Three years ago on Sunday, 24th July 2005, we motored by road from Pune to Ketkawale, Narayanpur, Purandar and Saswad.

Picturesque verdant hills topped by dense cumulous cloud and mist surrounded the 10 acres of flat land, on which stood, the Venkateshwara Temple at Ketkawale in the Sahyadris.

From there we proceeded to Narayanpur where there is the ancient and famous Dattatreya temple.

From Narayanpur, we proceeded to Purandar fort. It was a winding road up the mountain. The Purandar valley looked prettier and prettier as we wound our way up the mountain road.

From Purandar we drove to Saswad, a taluka town 33 km south of Pune at the foothills of the Purandar fort, and 30 kms from the last stretch of the Dive Ghat. According to Babasaheb Purandare, the great narrator of the grand Maratha saga, “every inch of Saswad soil has a chapter of history written on it!”

The round trip was Pune -> Ketkawale -> Narayanpur -> Purandar fort -> Saswad -> Pune.

Do read my travelogues at:

Sunday trip to Ketkawale, Narayanpur, Purandar and Saswad
Shrikshetra Narayanpur
Purandar fort
Saswad

Will be very happy to have your feedback.

Ram

Postscript: Two days later, beginning 08:30 hours on Tuesday, 26th July 2005, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) off-loaded an unprecedented near one metre of rainfall over Mumbai. Heavy precipitation sustained over 10 hours caused the Santacruz meteorological stn to record 94.4 cm of rainfall, the highest ever in the history of Mumbai.

Ram, those are impressive photos and a nicely written succinct travelogue.
Now I want more! Please oblige, if there is indeed more.

Awesome thread guys! Great photos, all of you - just makes one curse oneself for not having carried a cam on some great drives. Here are some of my fav's:
  1. Shiradi ghat - done it a dozen times at least, and many a time in early monsoon (and when the roads were in good condition!)
  2. Mysore - Wayanad -Calicut - drove through in Dec'06 but was lucky to get a good off-season shower on the day of our journey. Awesome!
  3. Kodaikanal - Theni - Munnar - late Jul'01, when the monsoon was easing off. The tea plantations were at their greenest
  4. Kottayam - Ponkunnam - Erumeli - Pamba - 2 weeks back, in a beaten-up Indica taxi (which I drove, thanks to the driver having no clue of the route or how to handle the vehicle on this stretch) en route to Sabarimala. The rubber plantations and the ghats were really beautiful.
Cheers,

Thanks for your inundation.
It has now inundated me to such an extent that I am just hoping that I get to visit Ladakh soon.
The pictures you have posted are mind blowing. Beautiful scenery! I love them all.
