| H V Kumar - Driving Log Books - KUMAR'S DRIVING LOG BOOKS Ladakh,Oct 2004 Check out above log book which has details of the Delhi-Shimla route. Please note that traffic is slow beween Ambala and Dera Bassi, there are jams at Zirakpur (jus before turn off to Chnadigarh) and terrible traffic jams at Kalka. Allow for journey time up to 10 hours. H V Kumar - Driving Log Books - KUMAR'S DRIVING LOG BOOKS North India, Dec 2007 Check out the above log book for the Shimla-Manali roue and also the Manali-Delhi route. I have bypassed Chandigarh on journey from Manali to Delhi. Roads are good, but traffic can be high in and around Bilaspur thanks to cement trucks. Allow for journey time of 8-10 hours from Shimla to Manali, and 12-14 hours from Manali to Delhi. |

| Yeah, the tattapani route is nice. But if you have some time and want fun - Jalori it is. Ask anupmathur saab, he just took that route two weeks back ![]() |

| BHPian | Hi, I am planning a trip to Manali on the X'Mas holidays from 25 to 27 Dec. I'll be driving down from Chandigarh to Manali in my Swift with family. Need suggestions w.r.t route to be followed. There are 2 possible routes that I can take 1 - (NH21 A & NH 21) Chandigarh - Panchkula - Pinjore - Baddi - Nalagarh - Swarghat - Bilaspur - Sundarnagar - Mandi - Kullu - Manali 2 - (NH 21 ) Chandigarh - Ropar - Nehon - Swarghat - Bilaspur - Sundarnagar - Mandi - Kullu - Manali I know the Pinjore - Baddi - Nalagarh route is not a very good one... Has anyone used the route via Ropar??? Is there an alternate route that I can take? How much time will it take for me to cover this distance by both the routes. | During my trip in the first week of December, I took the second route while coming back from Manali. It took me about 7 hours from Manali to Chandigarh with a half an hour break. The route is ok except that it is very curvy between Bilaspur and Kiratpur, so much so that my hands got tired rotating the Scorpio. Otherwise it is the route which most of the people take and I have no idea about the other route. While going I went from Shimla and Shimla to Manali has three options. |

| The second route is the direct and preferred route, and it could take you 10 hours of fast driving to do Delhi-Manali. Bear in mind that you may encounter heavy fog in the Bilaspur area, and driving in early morning and late evening is very difficult. |

| I am also planning a trip to manali with 3 other friends, but had a query, we have a M800 at our disposal. But since never been on this route i seek fellow BHPians help. Are road including uphill climbs etc are doable in a 800 . I mean considering flimsy braking system etc, or should be considering a taxi ? Although 800 is '08 model in pretty good condition with clutch plate just changed, brakes need a bit of adjustment though, which we will ensure doing through before leaving. Any suggestions ? |

M800 would rock man. Make sure that you keep it under M800 limits, keep in mind the build quality that is shelling you and braking system you have at your disposal. Dont overspeed, on the rocks keep it around 30-40kmph. There is this thumb rule when you are on hills, you use a certain gear when climbing up say 2nd or 3rd, make sure when you are coming down you use the same gears. When rolling down a hill its very tempting to get into higher gear and speed up the roll, but dont even try that on an M800 and let the temptation be a temptation for now. Drive safely. Cheers.

Road from Kullu to Manali may post a slight challenge as at places its quite narrow, try to keep your M800 on road as much as possible particulary when passing through traffic. The reason for doing so is that roads are somewhat inclined from the ground level and at places if you get off road it may puncture the tyre or may also cause some damage to axel. If your car has tube tyres make sure that the spare tyre is in proper shape. Just be careful on the above mentioned note. Cheers.
