I have stayed in GMVN's hotel at Dhanolti - basic, but lovely location, and not at all expensive.

We stayed here too! Although the rooms are fairly basic, the warmth and hospitality of the hotel staff more than makes up for it.

GMVN at both Dhanulti and Chamba. Visit Surkanda Devi temple about 5 kms from Dhanaulti enroute to Chamba. In Muss do visit clouds end and if feeling sprited enough there is a small temple on a hillock opposite to clouds end. The trail is easy and makes for a plesant walk in the woods kind of thing.
In Chamba do ecperience the night wind howls which can get scary in pine woods.

GMVN in Chamba has a unique hilltop location.

and for staying in chamba you shouldnt look any further.

Apart from GMVN in Dhanaulti, you can have a look at the following if you fancy camping/activities kind of stuff.

Whispering Pines

And there is a mid range hotel too in dhanulti

Hotel Midway Dhanaulty :: Residency & Restaurant

Hope it helps

With due respect, Simply_sunny, if you look at the price differential, these 'private' resort types are simply not worth it!
And if it is five-star luxury that one is after, why bother to go into the himalayas at all?
To be with nature, rustic, simple and realistic ...et al ... isn't that the spirit?

And for Mussoorie, I'd also recommend you have a look see at Padmini Nivas. A true heritage property that has character. This is at the library end, steep driveway down on the right, from where the Mall and Camel's Back roads intersect.

Anup

there are no other options in Dhanaulti so you have to make a pick.

Its too easy to find a hotel of your choice and budget in mussoorie.

Exactly!
But Dhanaulti does have those private hotels across the lawn from GMVN.

Mussoorie has ALL the options but I have always believed that choice of hotel makes or breaks a holiday!

I'm not terribly well heeled so I have always looked for great value for money!

Thanks @ Kumar, Ajit, Wanderer, Sunny and Anup

@ kumar and Ajit - Do we have to some sort of booking at the GMVN before we start from here? As i know its a government run place right?

@Anup - I had checked the website for Padmini Nivas and the rooms dont look 2 good. Have you personally stayed over there?

@ Sunny - As i understnad Chamba is not 2 far from Dhanulti so we can stay in Chamba as well if Dhanulti has less options.

I walked in and got a room - what I did was top give them a call 3-4 hours before arrival and requested for booking. You should get it too, else you have options at Chamba and Musoorie. In any case, you can check out their web-site and make bookings. Or check out on phone (number on web-site) before going out there

Not less than a half dozen times.
Room # 10 and the one below it in main block have excellent valley view.
We usually preferred the detached cottage, room nos 11 and the little one behind it (#12). It's like being in your own private cottage with garden. Same great valley view.

We loved the place.

Dhanaulti has more options than Chamba. GMVN is good. You can also get the bookings done at their office in delhi, I think but need to check. In case you want I can find out and pm you the numbers or address.
