Default Re: Trivandrum - Kollur (Mookambika) query

Please forgive me for this advice
There is a train (BIKANER EXPRESS) from Kochu veli,Trivandrum .Starts at 3.15 pm on all Saturdays.
Get sleeper tickets.
The train stops at Mookambika Road station ,Byndoor at around 7.30 am.Only 2 minute Halt.
Get down and walk to main road ( 7 mins). [Alternative : Omni taxis available from station to Kollur]
There are buses starting from this point when the train arrives, upto Kollur busstand.
Get down at busstand walk 5 minutes to Temple.
Cheapest and easiest way to travel to Mookambika.
Stay there overnight and catch the morning bus after darshan to Mangalore.[not much comfortable ;can get down at udupi temple]
Catch Maveli or Trivandrum express.Reach Tvm by monday morning. Goto Work (if needed)
Alternative:
Catch Netravati Exp from Byndoor at 3:00 morning on sunday.
You get enough time to visit Kudajadri in jeep.

The second is, continue going on NH17 via Maravanthe Beach (17 kms from Kundapura) and turning right at Baindur (33 kms from Kundapura), and then going 27 kms off NH17 to Kollur.

In both cases, you do not have to go into Kundapura town, stick to the bypass when you are coming from Udupi side.

For those coming from North side, the turn off at Baindur is 20 kms from Bhatkal.
Just to add what I observed/enquired on my Mangalore->Kollur drive last saturday:
1) First right turn from NH-17 will be at Taloor (or Thallur) cross and it is just about 3-4 kms after Kundapura town. Drivers I met at Sharon@Kundapura and petrol pump guys in the town strongly adviced against anyone from taking this route. There is a Kollur direction/distance board at this junction.
2) Second right turn from NH-17 will be at Hemmadi and it is just about 6-7 kms after Kundapura town. The NH-17 takes a sharp left here and the Kollur road takes a right with an upward gradient. This is the most popular route and most, if not all, express buses from Mangalore/Udupi take this route to Kollur. There is a Kollur direction/distance board at this junction too and I think it showed Kollur=32 kms only.
3) Since we wanted to drive upto Maravanthe beach, we continued on NH-17 and took some snaps on the 1 km stretch where you have sea/beach on your left and Sowparnika river on your right. Since I was aware of the usually good Baindoor->Kollur route that pilgrims take between Kollur and Murudeshwar or between Kollur and Baindoor station, we were actually heading for this right turn. For those who are interested in this turn-off from NH-17 (esp. if you are coming from north like Murudeshwar/Gokarna/Goa), this would be just south of Baindoor town.
4) As a 4th turn-off option, we noticed an inviting good single lane road to the right marked with Kollur=26 kms just about 4-5 kms from Baindoor. On enquiring with local auto fellows and a couple of local policemen (there were there since there was a Ganesha procession happening in that area) at this junction, all of them told that the road is in very good condition. Indeed, the road was very good with good sceneries (hills, lakes, farms, fields etc.) and valley views till it joined Baindoor->Kollur route about 10 kms before Kollur. Would strongly recommend this route if you want to cover Maravanthe on your way to Kollur from Kundapura.

Will be driving to Guruvayoor most probably and turn back from there.
Good that you dropped the plan. I didn't see this thread before my journey last week to Kannur. Took almost 5 hours to reach kannur from Kozhikkode, a distance of just 90km. I enjoyed the drive, as it was pure offroading fun through the NH, but my better half and kids had a horrid time.

Planning a trip from Guruvayoor to Udupi and Mookambika in the 2nd half of May. Looking for advise on road conditions, driving time that I should expect etc.

My plan is to leave Guruvayoor by about 6 am. Should I plan a halt in Udupi or can I make it all the way to Kollur.

If you can leave an hour earlier (5 am) even better.
You will then not face traffic till at least halfway between Calicut & Kannur.
Road conditions are good.
Heavy traffic in Calicut-Kannur, Kasargod-Mangalore-Udupi sectors.

You can easily reach Kollur by 3 pm.

@hvk - Thanks for your prompt reply. I am considering adding Sringeri to the plan. So it would be Guruvayoor - Kasargod - Sringeri - Kollur. How many hours should I add for the travel time considering a two hour halt at Sringeri. I see in googlemaps that till Sringeri I will be on the Mangalore-Bangalore highway and i would need to cross Mangalore city. Is it any better or worse than going through Mangalore to Udupi?

I would suggest you stick to original plan of going to KOllur first and then Sringeri on the way back.

Reasons:
- Sringeri temple closes at 12 noon and reopens later in the evening, so by the time you reach there, it will be closed
- Kollur to Sringeri is hardly 3 hours drive which you can do on the way back too

If you leave Kollur early morning, you can reach Sringeri before mid-morning, via Hebri & Agumbe

Default Ponkunnam / Pala - Kollur :: Route & Stay Options

We are planning to go to Mookambika [Kollur] from Ponkunnam and starting tomorrow [09 Aug 2012, afternoon] Though the trip is focussed on visiting temples, we would like to take small de-tours and visit some nice places / options too.

Request help on below points.

1. Stay options
2. Route guidance & tips
3. Good food options
4. Places to visit en-route [slight deviations from mentioned route]
5. Good fuel pumps

Vehicle -- Swift D
Passengers - Bro-in-law, sister, 2 kids [8 yr & 1.5 yr] & me

The idea for the travel is as below. Please do suggest if this can be optimized / a better route available.

Day 1:

Ponkunnam - Pala - Angamaly - Guruvayoor [Stay should not be a problem to find]

Day 2:

Guruvayoor - Kasargod :: 287 kms [Stay @ a relative's]

Day 3:

Kasargod - Kumbla [Kumble] - Mangalore - Anegudde - Kollur :: 195 kms [Stay options?]

Day 4:

Kollur - Udupi - Kateel - Nellitheertha - Moodabidri - Dharmasthala :: 205 kms [Stay options?]

Day 5:

Dharmasthala - Kukke Subhramanya - Sullia - Kasargod :: 156 kms [Stay at a relative's]

Day 6:

Kasargod - Ponkunnam

If there is a better route than mentioned, please let me know. I would rather take a good slightly longer route than a bad short route and prefer good roads.

Please check the distance marked for each day and let me know it's doable. We expect spending close to 1 hour [hopefully] at all the temples mentioned; so please calculate that time also for the drive.

Please do point out some nice vegetarian hotels, fuel pumps [with neat rest rooms] en-route. Thanks in advance.

You wouldnt find any "vegetarian" restaurants enroute past Guruvayur.Plenty of places that serve non-veg and veg.

Day 4:

Kollur - Udupi - Kateel - Nellitheertha - Moodabidri - Dharmasthala :: 205 kms [Stay options?]

Day 5:

Dharmasthala - Kukke Subhramanya - Sullia - Kasargod :: 156 kms [Stay at a relative's]

Kasargod - Ponkunnam
There hardly any good stay options in Kollur.You could instead stay in Kundapur.Not so great,but still better than Kollur. Else you could stay in Udupi on the 1st day and do Kollur as a day trip from Udupi.If you start in the morning,you could head straight to Kollur,do the darshan and head back to Udupi by evening and stay the night there and next day morning head to Dharmasthala.

There is a fairly decent place to stay in Kollur - Devi Kripa. I stayed there many years ago with family - when it was a tiny place. I understand it has expanded and been renovated recently.

Devi Krupa Lodge | Kollur Hotel & B&B/Guest house/Hostel/Lodge | Online Rates & Booking | HolidayIQ

Phone No :- 08254 258274 (I think this is the tel number)

Veg food between Guruvayur and Kasargode - I would suggest Calicut as a major meal stop. While pure veg restaurants are hard to come by - there is one opposite the bus stand off Mavoor Road (I forget the name) - apart from that the Indian Coffee House at Aradhana Tourist Home (Kallayi Road - Calicut) should provide palatable greens.
Another decent place (after leaving Calicut) to stop for snacks or a meal is in Nileswaram - Nalanda Resort. Virtually on the NH it overlooks backwaters and makes for a good place to take a break bearing in mind that Calicut/Nileswaram is around 185 kms.

Request help on below points.
I did Kochi Kollur last February.
Started late in the morning and reached Kadampuzha temple by 0945 Hrs before the scheduled closure at 1000 Hrs due to renovation work. The work would have been completed by now.
Reached Parassinikkadavu Temple in the evening after visiting a friend at Thalasserry. Filled my Swift's belly full from Mahi as petrol was cheaper by around Rs 4 per liter. Diesel also is cheaper. So plan filling your Swift D such that from Mahi you can collect more at the cheaper price.
As my signature says Fuel is costly. That is why.
Spent the whole evening at this temple of the Muthappan till 1900 Hrs.
Some Hotels were located at Mangalore and decided Had some grub from the KTDC araam at the junction from where we deviate to the right to the Temple. The rooms are good there as I stayed there on my return leg. Good neat rooms but I checked in at 0200 Hrs and checked out at 0700 Hrs.
I drove to Mangalore and stayed there.
Next day went to Kollur and had booked at Hotel Devikripa which is good as a pilgrimage stay. Contact Number is 08254-258274. Many Keralites stay there. Moderately priced and moderately good. Two years ago I stayed in Beena residency which is quite good.
One should be choosy with food from Restaurants in Kollur as hygeinic food is to be the top priority during such trips. One must take food (lunch and dinner) from the temple's annadanam when at Kollur which is really hygienic.

Visiting Kudajadri from Kollurby Jeep is also advisable as the jeep ride through the treacherous terrain is worth to enjoy and can also trekk in the last leg.Total time required would be around four and a half hours.

Next day went to Murudeshwar which is also a good place to see on the sea coast with a Shiva temple.

Wishing a happy and safe drive.

Guys from Kannur / Kasargod, need one more help. I have been reading / watching news about floods in parts of Kannur etc. Would like to know if there is any problem in the route to Mangalore? I will be coming from Guruvayoor, so this info will help me plan well! In case there is any problem, any alternate routes?

Planning to drive Ernakulam - Kollur coming Friday(12/Oct) evening. The plan is given below:
Start from Ernakulm after 5PM and Reach my home at Vadakara around 11PM-11.30PM and have dinner + small break.Start within 1 hour (Around 12-1AM) and drive directly to Kollur through the route Vadakara-Talassery-Kannur-Payyanur-Kasrgod-Mangalore-Udupi-Kundapura-Kollur.
I always heard horror stories about the NH 17 stretches like Kannur-Kasargod, Kasargod-Mangalore and Mangalore-Kundapura.
Anyone have latest road condition updates on these stretches ??
We will be driving a brand new Punto with four on-board.

Thanks in Advance,
Deepak
