Default From Delhi looking for Snow-Need Suggestions

Dear Friends,

Originating point is Delhi.

I am planning to travel with my family of 3 in my swift vdi during this christmas break, between 26 & 31dec. May be for 4/5 nights. Main motive is to see snow. Need suggestions on places and good & reasonable hotels.

Thought of going to Nainital or near by to ranikhet, but not sure if it will get snow during that period.
Thought of manali also but it would be a long trip, so not sure about it.

So not sure what to do and where to go.

Need suggestions with the places I could go and hotels also.

Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.

Try Kufri and if you don't get any snow there keep going further till you find snow. There are lots of good hotels in this region. Delhi to Kufri should be doable in a day. But you are choosing the peakest of peak seasons to go. You will find millions of tourists from Delhi with loud speakers in their car completely ruining the peace and tranquility that we associate with the Himalayas.

Narkanda, had loads of snow last year on 25th December.
be careful while driving in hills in winters, black ice can catch you unawares.

Place to stay in Narkanda-Hotel Hatu

If you are lucky you can try hands on Skiing as well.

Be a little wary about Kufri - wasn't that where an entire family got marooned last year (though that was in Feb) when they went to celebrate some silver wedding anniversary or something? Heavy snowfall caught everyone (including the state administration) unawares & they were stuck for days.

I remember we were wondering if they were related to Ajay Wadhwa!

Could have snowed earlier this year. I went there from 24.11.02-1.12.02, and there was no snow even at Rohtang. Since you plan to drive, you could check about the snow through news/google about 2-3 days before your trip, and then plan accordingly.

This is terribly, terribly strange to know. Would have been extremely rare, if not the first time, for Rohtang to not have snow in end November !! Effects of global warming is being felt in various ways. This is certainly one example.

Sudipto, he's talking about 2002. This year, it has been snowing early. The effect of global warming is being felt in the reverse way!

That is true. If you wish, I can show you the pics. Of course, the photo date may be missing. There was no new snow, even though on the way from Manali to Rohtang (55 km), there were some little patches of snow from the previous season.

Didn't for a moment doubt your honesty Vasudeva. Sorry if I gave that impression.

I came across snowfall on Chail Kufri road on 18th october 2007 though it lasted for 15 minutes only.

I was on two wheels with just a t-shirt,within few seconds i froze
