Stayed at Thippanahalli homestay Chikmagalur for a night. Nice place to spend a weekend with excellent view of the Mullayanagiri peak. Links below

Default South India ::: Hotels, B&B, Homestays, Farmstays

Searched this forum but there was no specific thread dedicated to Hotels or B&B for travels in and around South India. Hence, thought of penning down this thread with a review of a Hotel i frequent in Ooty (lets see i think its been 4 times I have stayed in this Hotel)

So I will urge members to contribute as and when you stay somewhere so that its beneficial for others when booking places.

Sherlock Hotel - Ooty

Please note i am not associated with this place

If you require a peaceful stay with all day lazing around on the lawn basking in the sun in the winters or at night having a drink or two by the fireplace, this is the place to stay. This place was an erstwhile british bunglow which has been procured by Little Earth group and now being run as a Hotel dedicated to the Sherlock Holmes theme.

A standard room named Baskerville goes out for 1925 (inclusive of taxes) bucks including breakfast. yes its on the expensive side but i felt it was money well spent. We often just run to this place for a weekend, relax or play board games and comeback

Address: Upper Tiger Hill, Ooty
Rating: 4/5
VFM: 5/5
Booking: Available with all online travel agencies

A couple of pics

Thats the main house and entrance

The luxury cottages, about 5 numbers

The view from one of the cottages, we got to stay there once as we had gone on an off season and they just upgraded at the cost of the standard room

Hi guys...need some suggestions for hotels in goa. We are planning to go to Goa this long weekend and were looking for places to stay. We do need anything royal but clean rooms with clean toilets is a must. We can spend upto 2k per room.

I went to makemytrip etc but I am really confused between all the options. Also I found a hotel in panjim and I wanted to know which is the closest beach with water sports? Also how far is the beach from panjim? I chose panjim because we will be travelling by bus and the drop points are mapusa and panjim. I do not know about how far is mapusa from Baga/Calingute. I have heard the public transport there is pretty bad and you will be charged a lot even for short distances.

I am open to any suggestions/advice.

1. Who is we? A family or a group of friends? Reason for this, some hotels prefer families as they are less noisy as compared to a group of youth.

2. There are many hotels in Goa within your budget and you would have to decided if you prefer the beaches in north or south Goa.

3. Popular beaches which have watersport activities are Calangute, Baga and Candolim (north Goa), as well as Colva and Benaulim (South Goa).

4. Panjim is about 15 kms from the Calangute-Baga coast and about 40-45 kms from the Colva-Benaulim coast. Mapusa is about 10-12 kms from the Calangute-Baga coast.

5. Public transport (buses) is not very comfortable (passengers can be stuffed during peak hours) and winds up by 8-9 pm. More popular modes of transport are hiring of two-wheelers.

By we I meant my friend circle - No family! Should I go there directly and search for hotels or should I book one before hand? The thing is - we are going by bus. The bus can drop us at two points - Mapusa and Panjim. I am not sure where should I get down as we have not looked at any particular hotel. Should I just get down at Mapusa, come to BAGA and search for hotels? (Mapusa because we want to go to BAGA). Will we get rickshaws from Mapusa to BAGA easily? How much will it cost?

If you dont mind scouting around, you may find it beneficial to inspect different hotels before deciding on one, rather than on booking one through phone or internet. Looks and user reviews on websites can be deceptive and it is advisable to check out hotels before you book into one. The peak tourism season is over and you will easily find rooms during your stay.

If you plan to stay in a hotel along a North Goa beach like Baga, then it makes sense to alight at Mapusa, as this town is closer to Baga.

Rickshaws from Mapusa to Baga will be costly, mainly because of two reasons: (1) Rickshaws do not charge by the metre and operators have their own rates depending on the time and place (2) You guys are "tourists" and hence, they may try and fleece you.

I reckon that since you are arriving at Mapusa by bus in the morning, you could consider (1) taking a Mapusa-Calangute-Baga local bus service which runs quite frequently or (2) hiring a taxi. If I am not mistaken, prepaid taxis are available at the Mapusa taxi stand and their rates will be government approved rates.

Thanks for this info.

I have booked a trip to Goa during May on makemytrip in 'Santana Beach Resort'.
This resort was recommended in team-bhp in the Goa threads and it has a very good rating on Tripadvisor.

My children wanted to try watersports and I was worried if they (watersports) will be open in off-season (May).

Even if watersports activities are available in May, I would urge you to check with the Dhrishti lifeguards on the beaches if the sea is safe for these activities. The sea can get quite rough in mid or end May due to possible pre monsoon showers and it is best to ask the lifeguard for the status of the sea during your visit to Goa.

During a 3 family tour to munnar-kodaikanal-valpara (5days), we stayed at a wonderful bunglow in kodaikanal on 01st and 02nd april 2012 .
Banglow: 3 bedroom with attached bathroom+ large living room+land scapped lawn with lots of passion fruits/peaches plants and subergill trees with full of fruits (which was not ripe then)
2 banglaws made in one acre land, the one we stayed was in 25 cents and other one was in 75 cents which had a foreigner guest. The owner is a foreigner who rerely comes here.
Rate: 4500/night for full house(negociated from Rs.5000/-)
Location: Near lake
Contact care taker:09244151374 (we booked through agent locally)
The bad part of the stay : there was no kitchen, but to go out for food.

Santana beach resort is a very good property. I have stayed there a few times. Their accomodation is good, there is a small kichenette in rooms, location quite close to the beach, there are 2 swimming pools and staff is caring. I never missed dining in their beachfront restaurant.

Rest sure you will love your stay there.
