Hi,

I drove Gachibowli - Nanded and back over the weekend (Oct 8-9th)

I used the route via Nizamabad - Bodhan while going to Nanded and the NH161 route on my way back.

Pros and Cons of route via Nizamabad-Bodhan:

Excellent highway till Nizamabad from Gachibowli (ORR - Medchal)
Nizamabad -Bodhan road is good and passes through some scenic reserve forest area
Many food joints / hotels with parking on way till Nizamabad (did not stop at any)

Post Bodhan till Narsi roads are in really bad shape due to the recent rains
Post Narsi roads are better as you are on NH161 from Narsi - Naigaon

Enroute you will see many water bodies full to the brim after the recent incessant rains

Took me around 6 hours to reach Nanded.

Pros and Cons of route via NH161 (via Degloor - Sangareddy )

Roads are good from Nanded till Nizampet-Shankarampet stretch of NH161. Post this towns roads are patchy with potholes.

The bad stretches are however better than the Bodhan - Narsi stretch which have some horrible potholes.

This is a narrow 2 lane road leaves you exposed to fast incoming traffic and makes overtaking difficult. Watch out for speed breakers near villages.

The distance is shorter by around 55 kms via NH161 and there are no toll charges on this stretch (Hyderabad-Nizamabad section is a tolled highway).

No major places to take a break on this route till you reach Sanga Reddy town. Took almost 6 hours to get to Hyderabad from Nanded via the NH161 route.

Stayed at Hotel City Pride which was good. Roads in Nanded town are in bad shape after incessant rains. Had Darshan at Hazur Sahib on both days
(0ct 8-9) before heading back to Hyderabad.

I personally liked the NH161 route with little traffic from Nanded till Shankarampet.

I need to drive from Bangalore to Nanded sometime this month. Bangalore Hyderabad road is familiar territory so I am not worried. What are the updates between Hyderabad and Nanded? I don't plan on stopping over at Hyderabad.

Bangalore - Shamshabad - ORR (Hyderabad) - Exit to Nagpur Highway - Dichpally - Turn towards Nizamabad - Bodhan (avoid the bypass and go through the town) - Lohogaon - Naigaon - Nanded.
Dichpally has some good dhabas. Nizamabad will certainly have decent eateries. Nothing much after that.

Just so I've understood, by the Nagpur exit you mean NH44, Medchal and all the way to Nizamabad?

The route shown on google maps, if you were to key in Kurnool to Nanded, it goes via Bodhan, Saloora and Biloli and joins NH161. Is this correct? You have also advised to go through Bodhan and not take the bypass. On maps, it shows Varni Nizamabad road and then continues on to Bellal - Mosra Road. Is this the route you are referring to as it does go via Bodhan?

Also, how much of the route is 4 laned from Hyderabad onward?

Yes. That's the road. It is a 2 laned (must have become tolled by now) highway from Nizamabad onwards till Narsi (NH 161).

No. I was talking of only bypassing the Bodhan town. The route is Nizamabad - Nehru Nagar - Yedapally - Bodhan - Naaganpally - Saloora - Biloli - Lohogaon - Narsi - Turn Right on NH 161.

By "ByPass of Bodhan" I meant the bypass showing as SH 25 on google maps which runs east to west on north side of Bodhan town. DO NOT USE THAT (it was in shambles till last heard, cannot be sure as of today, but have seen it in shambles since 2012). Approach Bodhan town from East on SH 25 from Nizamabad, take the left fork to enter the town at Housing Board Colony and avoid the right fork marked as bypass. Now you are on SH 6. Turn a sharp 90 degree right turn at Ghouse Nagar and you are back on SH 25 to rejoin SH 25 at end of bypass.

Hyderabad ORR is 6 laned tolled road except at the exit to NH 44 at Medchal.
Hyderabad to Dichpally is North-South Corridor of NHAI and a tolled 4 laned highway.
Dichpally to Nizamabad is 4 laned State Highway.
Nizamabad to Narsi is 2 laned highway, must have got tolled by now.
Narsi to Nanded is 4 laned tolled State Highway.

Sandeep, I did Bangalore - Nanded trip in Aug 16 and took the exact same route on my way back from Nanded. Roads from Nanded to Nizamabad are decent but single, fairly driveable and nice country side drive. From Nizamabad onwards its superb NH toll roads.

While going from bangalore I had gone to Bidar first and then Nanded. Interior roads from Bidar were really bad till I hit NH161. Only issue with 161 is excess of speed breakers but in your route it will be for short distance.

Hyderabad - Nizamabad - Narsi - Nanded - Bhainsa - Basar - Nizamabad - Hyderabad :

1) BY PASSING NIZAMABAD : Nizamabad now has a bypass. Just before you enter Nizamabad town when coming from Dichpally, you will need to cross a railway level crossing. Do NOT cross it but turn right around 100 feet before that railway gate. This turn marks the start of the by pass. Once on the by pass, do not turn left or right at any intersections and continue straight. The road is 2 lane undivided at most parts and 4 lane divided at certain sections. The tarmac is mostly good but be alert for a few potholes now and then. Near the ending of the by pass, the road terminates at a lake where the road takes an automatic left turn and snakes next to the lake till a level crossing where you need to take a sharp right to cross the railway gate. This section of the road is to be traversed slow, like 20kmph types. Once you cross the railway gate, another 300 feet will see you joining the main highway where you turn right towards Bodhan.
For the return journey, you will need to turn left into the lane from the Bodhan - Nizamabad highway just before the huge water tank on the right side of the highway. The lane is pretty unassuming so look out sharp for it.
I have marked the by pass on this map : https://goo.gl/maps/PWRWrwuVqaE2

2) BODHAN BY PASS : AVOID. It still remains a disaster. Go through the town.

3) BODHAN - TS/MH BORDER : Road is pretty bad but not a disaster. The excellent road after the border will make you forget the bad stretch is just 5 minutes.

4) FOOD : Eat before you exit the Hyderabad - Nagpur highway. Nothing much is available from a little before you turn at Dichpally or from Dichpally right upto Nanded.
Somewhere near Biloli, there is a nice looking Sukh Sagar on the right side but since I did not stop there, no idea about food and toilets.
I stopped at Gurmeet Dhaba on my left just after Narsi (on the Bidar - Nanded Road) and do not suggest the place at all. It turned out to be a cheap liqour permit room with food at that level.
Nothing else looked appealing enough to stop.

5) TOLLS : There are 2 tolls after Bodhan and before Nanded. Each one is FREE FOR CARS. DO NOT PAY, they do not even ask.

6) NANDED - BHOKAR PHATA : This road is known as Hingoli Road. It is 4 laned divided but in bad shape. You can maintain 60kmph for this 7 km stretch.

7) BHOKAR PHATA - MH/TS BORDER : This 60km stretch can easily be termed as worse than the worst road (or even off road) you might have ever done or can imagine.
On map, this is : https://goo.gl/maps/iLz8DNTWbnz

8) BORDER - BASAR : Must not miss to drive on this 2 lane undivided road. The excitement of driving on this road will awaken your will to "live to drive". Nanded - Basar took me 2 hours for the 105km of which the 60km stretch from Bhokar Phata to MH/TS Border took me 90 minutes.

That's all to report on the present day situation on these routes.
