The only option is if you want to hit Thondi.
Anything else would be longer.

Which is the better option to go to Karaikkudi from Bangalore

a) Bangalore - Salem - Karur - Dindigul - Karaikkudi

b) Bangalore - Salem - Karur - Trichy - Karaikkudi

I do not mind travelling another 30 KMs if the road is good and travel is pleasant.

Can you guys help?

I would take advantage of the superb NH7, go all the way to Madurai and then take the Trichy road (the Viralimalai one) via Melur (and then Pudukottai road till Tirupattur) to Karaikkudi.

I don;t prefer the Trichy route because the NH67 between Karur to Trichy is still being widened and not in high-speed condition.

And I have not heard of the Dindigul-Karaikudi road condition, may not be great.

If you are looking for shorter distance with decent roads (of which 50% is excellent 4L upto Namakkal), then you may not want to go via Karur or Dindigul. Instead take the regular route

B'lore -Salem - Namakkal - Musiri/Thuraiyur - Trichy - Pudukkottai - Karaikudi.

From the B'lore-Trichy thread, it seems only 5 to 6 kms are not in good shape around Thottiyam stretch between Namakkal and Musiri. Otherwise, roads are in good shape but just that they all are 2 lane. Trichy-Pudukkottai-Karaikudi is in good shape and good speed is doable.

If you time your drive, you can cover them in good speed.

I agree with our one and only Road Guru hvkumar about taking good advantage of NH7, but the route is about 100 kms more. You don't have to go upto Madurai. Instead, I remember seeing a deviation from Dindigul in NH7 which directly connects further you towards Melur junction in NH45B and then to Karaikudi via Tirupattur and Pillayarpatti.

Perfect route sir HVK! Thats the fastest and the easiest.
Bangalore-Madurai-Melur-Tirupattur-Karaikudi.

@Fauji you can also visit Pilliarpatti on the way (very close to Tirupattur)

I have marked it on the route map.

Bangalore to Karaikudi

EDIT: @Ravi Now that you mention, even I see a road from Dindukkal towards NH45B (via Natham). But dont know what are the road conditions.

Thanks HVK, Ravi and Ampere.

NH 7 is definitely preferred. After Dindigul, Let me take Dindigul - Natham - Tirupattur - Karaikkudi road (SH 35) and see how it works. If it is bad then will return back via Melur - Madurai.

I see Dindukkal-Natham-NH45B intersection route going through quite many forest ranges. Hope that the road is fine.

EDIT: Looks like this road is quite heavy on usage with lots of sand lorries. It also seems that there is no by-pass for Natham.
You need to get into the Dindukkal town.

There is one disadvantage going via Madurai. The road deviating from NH7 at Sholavandan/Samayanallur towards Madurai city is not in good shape and always has hectic traffic. Add to that is the madurai city traffic itself, till you catch NH45B towards Melur/Trichy highways.

Both will kill your time very much and that too with more kms to drive.

Instead, I would recommend you to take Namakkal-Trichy-Pudukkottai route, else, the Dindigul-Natham-Tirupattur-Karaikudi route.

You need to get into the Dindukkal town.

The Hindu : Tamil Nadu News : A small irritant to ban
Well the route was definitely doable when I visited last some 6 months ago.
When you come on NH7, get off the highway just before the huge flyover into Dindigul and then ask directions for Natham Road. There are two ways from the round about in the Dindigul bypass- either go on the Trichy road and then join back or go through the Dindigul town. You can decide based on what time you are there. The rush hours are mostly school times and evenings.

There is a small ghat section you pass through and the roads were good there. Sirumalai reserve forest approach is also through this road. Natham is a very small town(or a big village) so you should be okay in passing it. You'll join the NH45B at Tirupattur and proceed onto Karaikudi.

Pros - Distance, Decent to Okay type roads beyond Dindigul
Cons - Pass through Dindigul, Natham, Few bad stretches in Dindigul-Natham

Madurai route definitely has more 4 lanes, but the bad stretch from Melur-Tirupattur will make you feel for it.

Pros - 4 lane mostly
Cons - Distance, Pass through Madurai, Bad stretch from Melur-Tirupattur

I would not prefer the Trichy route as it will be time consuming.

This is one doubt that I have. Is Tirupattur on GQ? I also thought the same. But Google maps and wikimapia show it to be otherwise (There seems to be a town/village called Kottampati, where the Natham road meets GQ). Can you confirm?

Also how are these forest ranges? Are they scenic?

@ampere - My bad! Tirupattur is in the way of NH226 from Pudukottai.
You are right, the intersection of this road at NH45B is near Singampunari.

It is not actually ghat, you'll just go through a pass probably for 5km or so.
But the route in general is green with mangroves around Natham and fields thereafter.

I have travelled several times to karaikudi. I think travelling through this route is the best.

Blr- Hosur- Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri-Salem- Namakkal and many small towns like Kulithalai-Lalgudi-Karimangalam-Thottiyam-Musiri till Trichy and then Pudukottai-Thirumayam-Karaikudi.

In this route i have travelled for more than 25 times.

Before entering into Karaikudi there are two alternative routes. One is the bus route which takes you into many small towns and the other one is the route which takes you to Kalanivaasal in the karaikudi town. This is the best route because of less amount of traffic.

I don't think reaching Madurai and then coming to karaikudi through pillaiyarpatti is a short one. Off course there exists a route but it amounts to travelling more number of Kms.Also Karur/Dindugal/Nattham/Karur is all surely not required at all.

I do not know the very recent road condition because i have not travelled in car to karaikudi for past one year.

Namakkal is between Salem and Musiri. I too traveled on this good, short route several times for my Pillayarpatti visit. But, I don't know the present road conditions.
