Anybody taken the Belgaum-Ramnagar-Anmod-Ponda route in recent times? What is the condition of the road these days?

Please update.

I will be going to Goa on next week and have to go to Ponda. I was considering to tale this route while going. Return will be via Sawantwadi.

Also, Did anyone travelled on Pernem - Satarda- Malewad - Sawantwadi route recently? This route is option to Patradevi- Banda route.

Again, i will try this route in the last week of may. If situation is worsened, then we can flash alert about this route for travel in monsoon.

will definitely post the details and pics of this route.
But as goa registered cars normally use banda route to reach sawantwadi, the route you mentioned must be problematic.
If possible, you check the details about this route condition at pernem and sawantwadi with local jeepwala and post here the update.

Whenever I leave Goa I always use the Pernem route. It takes exactly 30 minutes to exit onto the NH, from Anjuna (North Goa). The road surface is excellent (every time I have used it) and it is not very busy, hence one can travel at a descent speed. Even though it is not a very broad road, I find it a very quick exit from Goa, especially as I use it in the early mornings to get to Bombay at a reasonable hour.

The road on this route is not as wide as NH17. Also, as you enter Sawantwadi you have to go through the thickly populated area. that may be the reason. To take this route, you travel on NH17 till you meet the river. The NH17 turns right and runs along the river to Patradevi and straight you cross the bridge to enter Maharashtra and reach Satarda. There you turn right for Sawantwadi and Left for Vengurla. (I have heard that cops are usually there somewhere to stop you and check for booze bottles.) I had last traveled on this road in 2007. Do not know what's the condition today.

An update on toll between Pune and Kolhapur.
The Khed Shivapur toll is now increased by Rs. 5. So you pay Rs. 70/- here.
The Anewadi toll before Satara is increased by Rs. 5. So you now pay Rs. 50/-.
You could opt to pay Rs. 120/- at Khed Shivapur itself.

The Karad and Kini tools are same at Rs. 58/- each and you can pay it lumsum of Rs. 115/-.

Recently the toll was increased at Khed Shivapur to collect additional toll for the widening of Pune Satara road. Now, why is this increase in toll again from April 1st? Well, you must be kidding to ask this questions

Hi Marcus Brutus, can you enlighten me about the Border crossing between Goa and Mah. on the Sawantwadi - Pernem route.

1. Where exactly does the border sit on this route?
2. What is the exact condition of the road leading to the border on both sides?
3. How intrusive are the check-posts?
4. Any other information you may have forgotten to include in the above paragraph.

I basically have to drive to Siolim, so I am thinking to taking the inner route now. I am trying to avoid the really bad stretches since my wife is in the family way. Speed is not really of the essence, decent roads are.

Which is why I am giving up on the Amboli - Banda route. I am also trying to avoid the 5 Km bad stretch leading up to the border from Sawantwadi.

All inputs are welcome, please.

Hi Tigger:
I am very sorry to disappoint you. The border crossing is the same one as the one on the NH. This route I mention is a quick way to enter and exit Goa, especially if you are in North Goa in the Anjuna Vagator area. It is definitely tailor made for Siolim.
As one approaches Goa from Sawantwadi on the NH, there is a right turn to Pernem, you cannot miss the turning as one can see a huge concrete bridge (I presume it is used by the Konkan Railways), which one needs to go under to get onto this road. This road will then get you to Pernem and then onto Siolim.
The advantages of this road are that one avoids going all the way to Mapusa or for that matter going right into North Goa and then turning right into the beach belt. This road takes you straight there, also it is a lovely road to drive on and every time I have used it, the surface has been excellent. Let me just warn you here that many of the roads in Goa of late have not been up to their usual best, on enquiring I was told that it had something to do with the elections and that after everything settles down the roads will be resurfaced.

@Tigger, I think Me and Marcus are talking about different stretches of road.

He is talking about road within Goa from Siolim/ Vagator to directly reach Pernem/ NH17. Whereas I am talking about road that enters Maharashtra, crossing River Terekhol approx 3~4 kms after you cross Pernem Railway station. The highway (NH17) turns right and runs parallel to River Terekhol but if you go straight instead of turning right you cross the bridge and get into Maharashtra. This is just hundred odd meters before you go below the railway bridge.

If you take this road you avoid Patradevi/ Banda and instead get into Sawantwadi from the road that links Sawantwadi Railway station to Sawantwadi town. On the way it also crosses the under-construction Zarap-Patradevi road that will eventually bypass Banda as well as Sawantwadi and meet NH17 again near Kudal.

I am planning to take this road next week end. I will update the condition soon after that.

I guess you are right there. This route will only help in a quick entry and exit from North Goa and of course if you are in the northern beach belt which I keep iterating.
Thank you for thanking me for the clarifications, but it might just help if you could click the thank you button. That said, the last time I used that road was in February 2011. Though I have been to Goa a few times after that but have used public transport (as I was travelling on my own, I feel that it is a waste of resources to drive a large vehicle down with just one person in it). I only tell you this, because if I go by road this is the route I always take without fail.
If it is any consolation to you, on my advice a friend of mine has travelled on this route from Goa to Bombay and back again, this was in February/March 2012. It was the first trip he has ever made from Goa to Bombay and back by road. He had a great time and he thought the exit to the NH was brilliant (he used it both going and coming).

More than the elections, it's the work going on for underground sewerage in and around Margao and underground cabling work all over South Goa that have taken their toll on the road surface. All over South Goa, even in relatively remote side roads and villages, there are cable trenches filled but haphazardly or not at all resurfaced. On the main roads in and around Margao, newly installed manholes form humps that rock your car, and cabling was mostly done by horizontal drilling from pit to pit -- and the roughly filled pits, quite visible and avoidable in daytime, are really the pits for night driving.

In the five or six times I've been to North Goa in the last 3-4 months I didn't come across any unmaintained roads.

I am travelling on 27th. If anybody has recently taken this route please give me update on this.

I completely agree, I tried it last time and it was great. Didnt realise that I was already at the check post.
