Can anyone confirm the route from the attached image, from mapusa to Kolhapur, good enough for speeds of 80 plus.
Thanks.

Expect some bad sections on the gaganbawda ghat, the other option is to take the kolhapur-radhanagari-phondaghat-phonda-kankavli-nh17 route, this route too has some bad sections on the ghat.kolhapur to mapusa would take you around 4-5hours.

The best route to Goa after Kolhapur is to take a right turn 40 kms after Kolhapur. The place is Nipani and the hotel from where you take the right turn is "KAVERI". Post this you will come across Ajra, Amboli, Sawantiwadi, Mapusa and then to Calngute if you are going to North Goa !!

Ranjit, saw you mentioned a landslide at Amboli on another thread. Do you have any updates on current status for travel on Wednesday? Inputs from anyone else will also be appreciated.

The landslide in Amboli was almost two months back. Not heard of any more landslide.
Had traveled through the Amboli route to South Goa a month back. Barring few bad patches you can average 60kmph on the road from Nipani to Sawantwadi.
Enjoy the amboli waterfall

@Hayek

Just returned back to Bombay from Goa last night. So here's an update on the route taken by me as of August 28th.

It was pouring prior to the drive (and even throughout the route!) and the prospect of landslides occuring on the Amboli Ghat did scare me a bit but after driving on the suicidal NH-4A to Goa, any route would've seemed like heaven. So I went ahead and drove via the Sawantwadi(NH17)-Amboli-Ajra-Uttur-Nippani-NH4-Expressway route.

The NH17 upto the Goa checkpost at Pernem is butter-smooth. Once you cross the checkpost, you know you've entered Maharashtra 'coz that's when the potholes begin. The potholed stretch doesn't last long though so that's a relief. Road is smooth again till a steep ghat before Sawantwadi town that has a sharp bend which you have to be a wee-bit careful about. Amboli route is great upto the ghats (ghat has its fair share of sharp turns but its a lovely ride!) but somewhere close to the ghat there's a slight section where the road is bad due to a prior landslide (maybe the same pic that was up a few weeks later) but that's totally manageable. Then from there onto Ajra and Uttur, the road is mostly good with a few superficial craters - overall drivable. But the section between Uttur and Nippani to the NH4 is a bit bad with a few deep craters that can go unnoticed if you drive at leisure - but STILL manageable. Bottom line - take this route when you're off to Goa. Very scenic drive on the way especially the mustard fields on the way to Uttur and the foggy Amboli ghat Try and cross the route in daylight (before 6pm) as far as possible.

Stick to the amboli route for now, thats the best bet for now.Instead of the nippani turnoff, take the sankeshwar turnoff from nh4,that road is in much better condition as opposed to the nipani-uttur-ajra section.

Just came back from Goa yesterday. Route I followed was

Pune-Kolhapur-Nipani-Uttur-Amboli-Sawantwadi-Panaji-Margao

As for the road status:

Pune to Nipani : NH4 butter smooth
Nipani-Uttur-Ajara-Amboli - Nipani to Uttur is broken but drivable but the distance is not that large. Upto Amboli road is good but with small potholes along the way. Could manage a speed upto 70-80 kmph.
Amboli-Sawantwadi :SH-121 Good road no problem. Only the place where there was a landslide is bad but that just 20 meters of bad road. But lots of tourist at Amboli waterfall so road is good but people are bad.
Sawantwadi to Banda : the road is bad but drivable. The NH17 Swantwadi bypass is ongoing so all the traffic is diverted into the city which screws up the town roads.
Banda to Panaji : NH-17 Butter smooth no issues.

Overall it took me about 10hours from Pune to Margao. This included breakfast breaks and call-of-nature breaks.

The Bluez, Ranjit, Vikrant J - thanks. Find the level of detail you guys have provided really useful and amazing. Shall keep you and this forum posted after my trip, and try to live up to the benchmark you have established. Do post a travelogue with pics if possible.

Hi guys, I am driving down to Kankavli from Mumbai this Wednesday. Any idea which route to take? What is the condition of NH - 17? Or should I stick to Mumbai - Pune - Kolhapur - Gaganbawda - Kankavli?

Take the NH4 till Kolhapur then go via Radhanagar-Phondaghat-Phonda-Kankavli.Road conditions are ok with some bad sections around Radhanagari.

Kolhapur, Maharashtra to Kankavli, Maharashtra - Google Maps

Even I would say that Radhanagari is safer route compared to Gaganbawda.
There is not any traffic at all on the Gaganbawda route. Its very lonely.

Agree 100% with Ampere. There will be only some ST buses and bikes keeping you company! Very lonely indeed. It can be a bit of a problem in case of a puncture/ engine trouble.
