Chennai-Vellore-Krishnagiri-Hosur-Electronics City-Tumkur-Hubli-Ankola-Karwar-Panjim

4 laned throughout till Hubli. From Hubli,it is the NH63 which is very wide and in excellent condition till Baleguli Cross,Ankola. From there right turn towards Karwar on NH17 and onwards to Madgaon,Panjim.

The drive can be done in approx 15-16hours with a 4am start from Chennai. The other option is to halt the 1st night at Hubli.Plenty of places to stay on NH4 itself.Next day leave from Hubli around 7 in the morning to reach Goa by 12 in the afternoon. It is approx a 4-5hour drive.

A few friends from Karnataka told me to avoid the coastal road, esp. the Karwar - Mangalore section. I believe there is no road in many places. In fact, I spoke to a hotel guy at Murudeshwar and he also said that the road was pretty bad. Reluctantly, I have changed my route to Chennai - Hassan - Jog Falls - Murudeshwar - Hampi - Bangalore - Chennai, keeping the coastal drive to a minimum.

Cheers,

SSBIITM,

Firstly, why do you want to club Jog - Murudeshwar with Hampi? Jog at this point of time not worth a visit. You will see only rocks.

Secondly, i would suggest that you skip Jog - Murudeshwar and instead do

Chennai - Hassan (Belur-Halebid-Shravanabelgola) - Hampi - Badami/Aihole/Pattadakal - Bijapur - Bangalore - Chennai. This will hep you cover all heritage sites in Karnataka.

Just to add to what Ranjit, said, if you start by 3-4AM from Chennai you should be at E-City by about 9-10AM.
Give about 45 minutes to an hour to go through NICE and come at Nelamangala toll.

Give another 5 hours to hit Hubli. You can break at CCD or Kamat at Dobbaspet, which is at Dobbaspet (35 km before Tumkur).
