Hi all
I am planning to drive to Mumbai from Lucknow to Mumbai in December
Coukd you guide me as to which would be the best and shortest route
Apparently NH2-NH25-NH3 (Kanpur-Jhansi-Shivpuri-Indore-Nasik) seems to be the most obvious. But is it a good road?? This is not an expressway probably. I have a Qualis
Pl Help

Gunjan

You'll get excellent roads if you take the EW corridoor -GQ route.

Till Jhansi, road is bad, but manageble during daytime.

Jhansi to Udaipur was a breeze, when I did it in September. Udaipur - Mumbai should be fast as well.

Thanks. But could you guide on the Indore-Nashik route.
Via Udaipur means about 400 kms. extra!!!
Are roads on NH3 not good??

@gvasant: I think the only bad roads you will run into are Kanpur-Jhansi (NH25-NH2-NH25) and of course the messy Lucknow Kanpur stretch. For Kanpur-Jhansi budget on 4-6 hours! Otherwise the route via Indore & Nasik is excellent.

As far as I know the Agra Bombay Road as it is called is excellent except for a few patches. I will not detour to Udaipur!

Dear SGIITK
Thanks. Detouring to Udaipur would have meant about 6-8 hours extra.
I shall take the Jhansi-Shivpuri-Indore-nashik route.
But, why do you feel that Lko-Kanpur Highway is messy
I did it last week. It took around 50 mins for me from Lucknow Airport to Jajmau Bridge (Kanpur). Of course the city is messy.
Regards

How did you like/find the Unnao-Jajmau, Kanpur side). Incidentally, Kanpur - Lucknow is far worse. After a lot of noise they seem to have some system in place for vehicles onthe Jajmau bridge. I am doing the return trip about once a month so I should know. Hit Jajmau at the wrong time and be prepared for upto 45 minutes delay.

Dear Gunjan,

Indore to Nasik is not in a great shape. I just used that road from Indore till Malegaon. The AB Road is in great shape only for a short stretch out of Indore. After that it turns into something like a state highway. The four lanes disappear, there are many diversions and traffic is heavy as well. I would second black panther who says that EW corridor - GQ route would be the best, at least in terms of speed IMO

Kanpur-Jhansi took arounf 4.5 hours during the day. If you do it in the early morning it will be faster as the local markets won't be open then.

I would still suggest the Udaipur route, as this will be a great driving experience. You'll be able to average 100kmph from Jhansi to Udaipur and time burden won't be much. The route will be desolate and drive will be excellent. Re-fuel at Jhansi/Kota as you won't find PP on this route.

:Frustrati
I am now slightly off track.
Sgiit says that AB road is good.
Black panther & Eddy advise to take Udaipur route.
What distance is it from Jhansi to Mumbai via udaipur??

Jhansi to Kota is 330 kms and from Kota to Mumbai via Udaipur is in the range of 1000 - 1050 kms. Total distance from Jhansi to Mumbai via Kota and Udaipur would be in the range of 1330 - 1380 kms. But the roads would be great all along and you won't even feel the distance. In my reckoning it would take you a running time of max 20 hours

Regards,

+1

Choose the better route - unless you are driving at night and thus will avoid jams/fly over bad roads!

HI Gunjan,

Welcome to this wonderful forum!

Nice to find one more T-BHP member from Lucknow.

About the route, I am too confused with the 2 types of advises. I recently visited Khajuraho. Took the shorter route via Kanpur-Hamirpur-Mahoba-Khajuraho (NH 86 till Mahoba). It was pathetic and troublesome even in Safari. It tilts my opinion slightly in favour of the longer but excellent route for any journey, partiularly a long drive like Lko.-Mumbai. You still have lot of time, and will get further inputs on road conditions on Indore stretch too from those who have been through it recently.

Cheers

Yes,

to give you the right context - I normally take the MUCH longer Del - Kanpur - Lko than NH24 for the same reason. And it never takes me more than 8 driving hours (excl sleep) overnight.

I can bet that even with mad driving, I'd take none less than 12 hours on NH24!

Distance Comparison:

Route 1: Lucknow-Kanpur 85 kms-Jhansi 225-Shivpuri 90-Kota 240-Chittorgarh 190-Udaipur 110-Ahmedabad 235-Baroda 135-Surat 145-Bombay 300
totals to 1,755 kms

Route 2: Lucknow-Kanpur 85 kms-Jhansi 225-Shivpuri 90-Guna 100-Biaora 100-Indore 270-Dhulia 275-Nashik 160-Bombay 175
totals to 1,485 kms

That makes it over 250 kms more

Except for some bad sections in Bhognipur-Jhansi and some incomplete roads in Shivpuri-Kota section, the route is super-fast. Facilities are poor till you reach Chittorgarh. Udaipur would make a good overnight halt.

In Route 2, roads are mostly 2-lane, bad in many parts and not fast. Heavy traffic, especially of trucks. If you push hard, you can make it to Indore for the night's stay, but if you slip a little on speeds, you may not find any good places to stay in Biaora, Vijaipur, Shajahanpur.

It is a difficult choice between a super-fast Route 1 and a much shorter Route 2. But for a fast driver, the Route 1 would take the same time despite it being 250 kms longer.

hv,

I have two queries ( slightly off topic) :

1. Is it possible to do Bombay-Delhi using the GQ route in nineteen (19) hours, driving non-stop except for fuel stops?

2. Is it possible to do Bombay-Surat on the NH8 in two (2) hours, non-stop?

The steed is a Logan.
