Default Coorg Bangalore SH17 or NH48

Which is the better route from Coorg to Banglaore - NH17 (VIA Hunsur/Mysore) -255Kms or NH48 (via Arkalgud/shravanbelagola/kunigal) -273kms? The routes/distances as per google maps. Thanks guys.

both are nice routes - depends on where you are going to within Coorg.
Remember Coorg is a district spread over 5000 + square kilometres so it does take some time to get around on those winding roads from place to place.

If your primary destination is SOUTH Coorg area say Nagarhole Sanctuary, Gonikoppal, Virajpet etc it would DEFINITELY be better to use the Hunsur Route.
Frankly this route works perfectly well for Madikeri and the Northern bits of Coorg too - at least I ve predominantly used this route most visits and find it convenient.

If you are going to Somwarpet, Belur etc then it makes sense to use the other Route through Arkalgud, Gorur etc. Ive used this route long back when my parents were located in that area but more recently (4 years ago) only when the other route (Hunsur) etc was suffering from extremely lousy roads.

Thank you Shankar. Will be from Madikeri most probably. So I think the Husur/Mysore route should be right.

Hunsur / Mysore as a route is fine but the last time I went to Madikeri, the Madikeri - Kushalnagar stretch was horrible, other Bhpians here can probably give you a more recent update of that stretch !

magiceye
you meant SH17 and SH88 via Mysore instead of NH17 right?

Yes Deutscheafrikar I meant SH17 and NH48. SH88 is between Madikeri and Mysore.
NH48 is for the other route via shravanbelagola/kunigal.
I stand corrected.

That section has been bad for quite some time. Even two years back it was in the same condition.

Well the Kushalnagar stretch has been bad and guess will be bad thanks for the leaders.
Anyways please take the Hunsur/mysore route if your travelling to madikeri as this is shorter and in a decent condition. The Hassan route would take more time

Kushal nagar was bad some months back.
But you can byepass kushal nagar in various ways depending on your visits in coorg.

check my travelogue for the routes, most of those roads were good in August.

I have been through Srirangapatna route many times. So I was wondering how nice the roads are in the Chanarayapatna - Hole Narsipur - Arkalgud - Sanivarasanthe - Somvarpet - Madapur - Hattihole - Madikeri stretch? I intend to visit Madikeri (Club Mahindra) by 1st week of December. Is there anything interesting to see in this stretch?

Any suggestions?

Hi Prabhuferrari,
The Road from Holenarsipur to Arkalgud is petty bad in patches, single lane and lots ot potholes.
But road between Channarayapattana~ Holenarsipur is petty good (still getting done in places).
Places I remember are Shravanabelagola (Before Channarapattana)
Holenarasipur---> SriRamadevarakatta (on Hassan Road abt 5kms),
Arkalgud --> detour to Gorur dam (Backwaters)6+kms
Somwarpet--> Honnamanna kere 3kms, malahalli falls 20kms, pushpagiri temple from malahalli falls 3kms, Sakamma's bungalow ( in town), Harangi dam 16kms.
Madapur--> kotebetta 15kms (only jeep can go)
These are Some places that I can remember

Just a guard:

When going to Coorg via Mysore/Hunsur, many times, folks have missed the diversion to Hunsur from Srirangapatna. This is the road which basically goes through the Ranganthittu bird sanctuary.

Also, if you miss this turn, you can take the Mysore ring road to connect to Hunsur road. This RR is very good and very well marked.

Thank you Sathya. I would take the Hunsur route then as the route I asked seems to be in bad shape :(

magiceye,

Use the Siddapura route from Madikeri and not the main Madikeri-Kushalnagar route which currently, is a Martian landscape.

You will have to use the Mysore Road to get to Bangalore from Coorg. I dont how how NH48 comes into the picture here. NH48 is the infamous Bangalore-Mangalore road.
