Arrow Best Place For Snow In January

Hai TBHpers,

Thinking of a spot of snowsurfing between January 15th and 30th somewhere up north. Need your suggesitons for the best possibilities:

1. Place where you can drive up from Ahmedbad and back in 7 days.
2. Place where you get lots of snow / snow-fall.
3. Place where you can get a sport of sking, sking -lessons, snow-fun etc. Heard that Auli is booked up with some international competitions and would be open only in February.
4. Place where you have decent staying facilities for a family of 4.

If anyone has costs etc., that would be the icing on the cake.

Thanks in advance, the information / quality of information people here have never stop to amaze me !!!!!!!

You might want to check this thread where I had asked a similar question - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...need-help.html (Trip to North India - for snow. Need help!)

I went to Shimla (very little snow) and then to Manali (plenty of snow) then.

Thanks pjbiji, missed that one, lots of info there.

That was a 2007 thread and mostly centered around December, lots of water under the bridge in 2 years? Wonder if there's a shift for the snows to Jan/Feb and if there are newer inputs from many who are living near the snow-lines.

Apart from Auli I think Gulmarg in Kashmir is another location where you could get Ski lessons. Had been there many years ago, don't know what it's like at present.

Iqbal: Yes you're right, that's the best choice, but between 20th and 30th Jan, they have an international sking competition at Auli, so everywhere around Joshimath is jammed up, rates would be sky high.

I've driven up to Gaurikund, trekked up to Kedar, drove thro. Ukhimath, Chamoli to Joshimath, stayed there and also drove up to Badarinath a few years back and have been to Auli on the ropeway when it was not snowing, so keen to see some snow action.

Actually looking for other areas for this period.

Iqbal ji,

Unfortunately your info on Auli is both dated and incorrect.

I can confirm on both Jan 26 2009 (ZERO snow) and Jan 26 2008 (little bit snow - they had just started the skiing - read barely enough snow). It was well motorable both days FYI.

I have been to Joshimath and Shri Hemkunt Sahib, Badrinath for the last 30 years every year and I want to inform you it depends on year to year about snow fall at times it is very heavy and some years it is very scarce, I know many locals and call them in December, Januarry they always say 'Iss saal barf bhahut hi kumm giri ' or 'Iss saal barf bahut jayaada giri',and year by year due to global warming snow is becoming lesser and lesser.

Last year Uttrakhand did not get snow. Auli was dry.
If you want guaranteed snow, manali is your best bet.
If you want guarantee snow with sports, Gulmarg is the best

Thanks everyone for the inputs.

@ Akshay: lovely snow-shots.

For the competition at Auli, the organizers are fearing a snowless January and seriously considering importing snow making machines!!!!

As for snow I guess the Man Upstairs has to decide Looks like for guaranteed show, Gulmarg and Manali are the only 2 choices in January.
