Default Route Query: Bangalore to Bekal/Kasaragod

Hi all,

Planning a trip from Bangalore to Bekal from 23rd to 26th.

Planned route is

Bangalore - Mysore ring road - Hunsur - Kushalnagar - Madikeri - Suliya - Kasaragod - Bekal

Want to know the route conditions especially from Madikeri onwards to Kasaragod. I heard that the road conditions till Madikeri is good.

We are most probably driving down in a Civic and Verna.

If the roads are bad, is there an alternative?

Thanks everyone.

Road from Madikeri is not good, has bad sections. Alternative is to go via Hassan and Mangalore.

Bad roads starts from Kushalnagar to Sampaje. After Sampaje roads are better. This stretch is about 60 to 70 odd kms. Will surely take 2.5 Hrs to cover this stretch. Kerala roads are good.

Total kms will be probably around 400 Kms from bangalore to Kasargod.

Any other alternative will add at-least 50 to 60 Kms.

why don't you try madikeri-bhagamandala-panathur-neeleswaram-bekal ? I am not sure about the road conditions in the 20kms stretch that runs through forest/ghats in the bhagamandala-panathur stretch

Indeed. We did the Kanhangad-Panathur-Bhagamandala-Madikere stretch 30th Dec 2009 - pretty good. Kanhangad to Panathur no issues. Panathur-Bhagamandala 25km - not too bad. Hardly a few vehicles on this stretch as dreamdiesel had mentioned. More over you get a Talakaveri trip for free ;-) 8 km detour from Bhagamandala. Good views from the top up there - 300 odd steps to the top.

Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur - Madikeri - Bhagamandala - Panathur - Kanhangad - Bekal/Kasaragod is a very good alternative route.

Bhagamandala - Panathur stretch is about 26kms single lane road. Very low traffic density. Good road with few bad sections. I covered Bhagamandala - Panathur - Kanhangad - Bekal Fort (about 87kms) in 2hrs. Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur - Madikeri - Bhagamandala (about 300kms) will take about 6hrs.

Thanks for the replies.

hvkumar: I thought about the Sakleshpur - Mangalore route, but the road conditions in the ghat section doesn't inspire confidence. Or is it better now??

Thanks to all the others, looks like Madikeri - Bhagamandala - Panathur - Kanhangad - Bekal is a good alternative. Easy to find the junctions towards Bhagamandala at Madikeri and onwards??

We are taking two big cars so just wondering if the road is broad enough at places for two vehicles(especially Bus/lorry) to pass each other especially between the Bhagamandala - Panathur stretch?

Just to know, how bad is the Kushalnagar to Sampaje road? Huge craters? mud roads?

No issues at 98% of the place. There is enough space available. There are some buses used to ply in this route connecting Madikeri to a small Karnataka town down the hill.

Thanks

Hello All,

I'll be travelling to Nileshwaram during 12-14th Feb from Mysore. We'll be 4 ppl travelling in my alto. Do you think Madikeri - Bhagamandala - Panathur - Kanhangad - Nileshwaram stretch is doable in alto?

Abhishek

Yes..!!! You can..!!. I would also suggest you to watch out for the news on opening the Perumpadi - Makkutta road. If the road is re-opened by the time, its a good alternative.

Thanks
Rajesh

Thanks a lot folks for the details.

Did Bangalore - Mysore - Madikeri - Bhagamandala - Panathur - Kanhangad - Bekal.

The only sore spot in this section is the Kushalnagar - Madikeri section. Road work is happening in full swing. Thankully there was a lot of traffic going towards Madikeri and very less on the opposite direction. Why can't they lane one side and then start the other side??

Madikeri - Bhagamandala has a few rough patches in the beginning. Work is going on there as well.

You need to take the left at the first roundabout as soon as you enter Madikeri for the Bhagamandala route. There is an IOC petrol bunk on the left.

Watchout for a sharp left turn towards Bhagamandala just a few kms from Madikeri. If you miss it you will head towards Mangalore.

As soon as you hit Bhagamandala, you need to take the right just after the arch there. If you go straight you go to Talacauvery.

The Bhagamandala Panathur stretch goes through a nice forest section where the road is good and there's almost no traffic. But watch out on the turns as you could encounter a jeep or someone even sleep on the side of the road

The last few kms before Panathur the roads are not that good but still passable. Once you cross Panathur the roads are good all the way.

The stretch between Madikeri - Kanhangad does not have any good hotels, so either have food early or carry it. If you are ok with the road side small hotels then you could find one in each of the small villages that you would cross.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions- both about Nalanda resort and the road conditions to Nileshwar from Mysore. Just came back yesterday from a nice 3 days holiday. Just a quick road condition update:
Mysore - Kushalnagar (usual great road)
Kushalnagar - Dubare - Chetalli - Madikeri (good, some narrow stretches)
Madikeri - Bhagmandala (mostly in great condition, some rough tarmac in the initial section)
Bhagmandala - Panathur (great forest drive - be careful at sharp bends which are aplenty)
Panathur - Kanhangad - Nileshwar/ Bekal Fort (mostly decent enough)

Inside forest stretch before Panathur don't stop the vehicle - narrow road and snakes around (spotted at least couple of them basking in the sun!)

FreedomExpress, Thanks for the detailed info regarding road condition. Please publish the drive timings as well.

Snakes - yes, they are a common feature in those region I suppose. I too noticed couple of them on the road.

When do we see a travelogue?
