Here is an excellent TL by rk_sans on Banavasi, which gives you a perspective of what all you can see.

Day 3: Unchalli (and perhaps Benne Hole) falls (Not sure whether can cover Yana
as the route distance seems to be longer than it aerially appears in maps)
With Sirsi as the center I think you should be able to cover Yana and Unchalli falls on the same day. Do confirm once more with Ravi Bhat. He is the best guy to provide the latest on this.

Please comment on the places to visit and the plan. Please also suggest decent
accommodation options in Sirsi.
Check the TL I referred to. It should have good pointers. I dont know about any hotels in Sirsi. Again check with rk_sans or Ravi Bhat on the same.

Please suggest good veg food joints at Belgaum / Dharwad / Hubli (or on the
route), with good rest room facilities etc.
At Belgaum, you can break at Sankam Residency. (Location)

Hubli I think does not have a decent place on the bypass.

Regarding route, I think Pune-Hubli is obviously NH4.
No guesses there!

From Hubli to Sirsi, seems like via Mundgod (SH69) looks obvious. However, how is it to take NH67 via Kalaghatgi-Yellapur?
Dont take the Mundgod option. Go all the way till Hubli. Take the bypass road.
On the bypass you would see the Ankola road exit. At Yellapur. turn towards Sirsi. The route bypassing Hubli directly to Kalghatgi also does not help that much. The 325km of total distance is very good. 200km of 4-lane till Hubli you should be able to cover in 3 to 3.5 hours. Yellapur is another 60km away which should take an hour to 80 minutes. The rest of the 60 km should be about similar time.

You would reach Sirsi by about noon time (3PM) D1.

Dear TBhp members,

Posting to an old thread.

I am planning a road trip to northern coastal Karnataka region from Pune in September 2015. I will be accompanied by my wife and two kids (7 yrs & 3 yrs). Have planned following route purely based on Google maps.
Need your help in validating the route, distance, travel time etc. Do let me know if there are better alternate routes available.

On day 1, I would be starting around 1 pm.

Any help in this regards is greatly appreciated.

All routes pretty much in place.

The only point to note: Sirsi-Hubli is via Yellapur.

You mean the route should be,
Sirsi - Yellapur to NH63 - Kalghatgi - Dhumvada - Mansur (NH4)

Is Gokarna - Murudeshwar - Jog falls - Sirsi doable in single day including sightseeing?

Thanks.

Either that or you can also do : Sirsi-Yellapur-Hubli bypass : NH4

Distance wise, its pretty much doable. But to visit these places and also cover 220km is not that easy. I would say, break at Murdeshwar or Jog.

My inputs on this trip:-

Since you are travelling to enjoy nature and the drive. I suggest you to drive to Gokarna in the following route:

Belgaum- Khanapur - Londa - Ganeshgudi - Joida - Kadra - Karwar. Very scenic, beautiful winding roads (sparse traffic), lots of photo opportunities, thick forests, the supa backwaters and Anshi bird sanctuary. It's about 240 Kms - should take you about 5h 30mins with required stops.

If you make it to Karwar by dinner time, you could binge on some delicious seafood at Amruth or you could take a halt here as well.

Next day you could spend leisurely at Gokarna. NH17 is brilliant on the UttarKannada side. Although watch out for deviations (due to ongoing 4 lane work) between Honnavar and Murudeshwar. There is no toll on the sharavathi bridge now.

Head out of Gokarna by 1 pm, have lunch and set out to Murudeshwar. Take a halt here. Next day you can continue to Jog as "Ampere" sir suggested via NH206. Do note that roads are good throughout, but the ghat sections is one of the most brutal ones in Karnataka. Lots of hairpins. Will induce motion sickness even in the stronger ones.

Rest of the plan looks good.

Have a nice trip and a safe drive.

Cheers,
Aniketh
