Question 6 Day - Karnataka Road Trip

Mates!

I am looking forward to your views on two major topics in this thread:

1. Validate the Trip (Time and Effort) I am planning - Its more of a Temple Visit trip along with some sight seeing. My Brother, Mother and I will be embarking on this Voyage from Bangalore.

2. Will this trip be an issue considering that my Motor - Swift Vdi will be < 1K on mileage (run in period).

Now more on the 1st topic - The Trip Itinerary:

Day 1:
Bangalore – Belur – Halebid – Hassan – Mangalore (Night Halt)
(Temples visited: Belur & Halebid)

Day 2:
Mangalore – Gokarna (Night Halt)

Day 3:
Gokarna -Idagunji – Murudeshwar (Night Halt)
(Temples visited: Gokarna, Idagunji & Murudeshwar)

Day 4:

Murudeshwar– Kollur – Kundapura - Udupi (Night Halt)

Day 5:
Udupi– Kateel – Sringeri (Night Halt)
(Temples visited: Udupi, Kateel & Sringeri)

Day 6:
Sringeri – Horanadu – Dharmasthala – Bangalore
(Temples visited: Sringeri, Horanadu & Dharmasthala)

Looking all the Motor-heads and Gurus to help validate my travel plan's effectiveness (Time and Comfort, especially that my Mother will be coming along, just me and bro to drive). Also if i could fit in some more MUST look places in the same route.

Trip is planned for in first week of December 2010.

Thanks in advance.

1. You will need 2-3 hours each at Belur and Halebid. Can you spend that time and also plan to drive all the way till Mangalore?

2 Do you really need to go to Mangalore? You can alter the course.

Why not the following route:

Bangalore-Belur-Chickmagalur-Sringeri-Horanadu-Dharmastala-Kateel-Udupi-Kollur-Murudeshwara-Gokarna-Honavar-Shimoga-Bangalore

Except the last sector, all others are short runs.

Sringeri – Horanadu – Dharmasthala – Bangalore
(Temples visited: Sringeri, Horanadu & Dharmasthala)

Thanks in advance.
The itinerary can be tweaked a bit to follow a circular path from Bangalore.
One such thing I can think of is as follows:

1. Bangalore-Halebid-Belur-Sringeri (night halt) - About 340kms
2. Sringeri-Horanadu-Dharmasthala (night halt) - About 100kms
3. Dharmasthala-Kateel-Udupi (night halt) - About 120kms
4. Udupi-Kollur-Murudeshwara (night halt) - About 140kms
5. Murudeshwara-Idagunji-Gokarna (night halt) - About 90kms
6. Gokarna-Bangalore - About 490kms

Except for the last day, other days are less hectic from driving point of
view. The time needed in temples is dependent on the crowd. You could do it in reverse direction too.

Thanks,

This seems much better and is doable.
Temples like Belur/Halebid can be visited in a hurry. It has to be in leisure ONLY!

PS: For that matter all places are for leisure!

Thanks a ton fellas! Its heartening to see such great responses and candid feedback.

I guess I will plan the route suggested by prasad14.

Just wanted to get you alls opinion on the Run In period stuff. Will it be OK for a sub 1K mileage Swift Vdi to do this trip.

Hi, Are you doing Hotel Booking in Advance at all this places? I am also planning the coastal karnataka tour in first week of November(Diwali holidays) and confused whether to book hotels in advance or walk-in directly. Not sure about availability of hotels in Diwali holidays so in dilemma now.

sandeep its advisable that you make your hotel bookings in advance. There is always a dearth for accommodation along coastal karnataka during the holiday seasons. Even upscale resorts run short of rooms along this route.

Well I too need to start looking for Hotel Reservations and availability - especially as I plan to make this trip during Dec (a holiday season). Now that I have more or less decided (with the help of fellow BHPians) on the route and places that i will be visiting, one item gets a tick on my To Do checklist .

Will appreciate with the Gurus can help with my other query - "Just wanted to get you alls opinion on the Run In period stuff. Will it be OK for a sub 1K mileage Swift Vdi to do this trip."

I like the itinerary for days 2,3 and 4. 100-150 km per day is just about the right distance for a nice trip. I see you're missing Kukke Subramanya which given time can be included in day #3. There are other nice but less known temples e.g. Amruthapura near Tarikere but given your 500km marathon on the last day, you might not have a chance.

What road do you plan to take from Gokarna -> Bangalore ? Via Siralkoppa/Davanagere ?

Has anyone done the Siralakoppa->DVG stretch recently ?

What about

1. Bangalore : Kukke : Dharmasthala -> 340 kms
2. Dharmasthala : Kalasa : Horanadu : Sringeri -> 140 kms
3. Sringeri : Karkala : Udupi -> 90 kms
4. Udupi : Kollur : Murudeshwara : Gokarna ->210 kms
5. Gokarna : Sirsi ( Marikamba ): Shimoga -> 220 kms
6. Shimoga : Belur : Bangalore -> 340 kms

Oh btw, I saw in the original IT you posted : Sringeri – Horanadu – Dharmasthala – Bangalore : that'd have been massive. Don't underestimate the Horanadu : Dharmasthala stretch : it can be very time consuming.
