Blore - Hassan - Mudigere -Charmadi- Belthangady - Mudabidri- Karkala - Udupi - Kundapur - Byndoor.
Even this route is turning out to be 500KM distance (from:bangalore to:12.980471,76.102295 to:SH 74 to:SH 64 to:SH64A to:NH 13 to:SH 37 to:NH 17 to:NH 17 - Google Maps), same distance as option#1 (blore - honvar - baindur). How is it better? Sorry if it sounds stupid, but really like to know.

If you are going to Byndoor via Honnavar you will be going by Shimoga - Sagara - Jog- Honnavara - Bhatkal then Byndoor.

Instead of going a round you can go from Sagara to Kollur from there to Byndoor.

If you take the Charmadi route you may not get stranded since this is one of the regular routes where you have people around.

To go from Sagara to Kollur you have to take the ferry on the Sharavathi backwaters (Hasirmakki Launch). It is the shortest way. If you do not take the ferry, you will have to go via Hosanagar.

Check this link for pictures & info
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/1502787-post3.html

You can also take the following route to Byndoor.

Bangalore-Tumkur-Shimoga-Ayanur-Ripponpet-Hosanagar-Nagar-Kollur-Byndoor. I guess this must be the shortest route. I do not have updates on the road conditions though. I traveled on this route earlier this year and it was manageable.

I will be travelling to Mangalore tomorrow and this time I am excited to travel in the popular Bangalore - Mangalore day train.

Will definitely post my travel experience once I am back. Hope to make some small trips around Mangalore during the weekend.

I am leaning towards #1, but it finds no mention in 100s posts in this thread.
Well here is the latest update as on Sunday(27-12-09)

This route is good all the way till Jog falls, but after ghat section the route deteriorates, some places near gerusoppa is in bad condition, say around 20kms, But rest of the route is in very good condition(tumkur bypass 200mts road patchwork is going on).
Honnavara to Byndoor is in Very good condition except some minor potholes in Bhatkala town.
If you want a scenic drive, some twisties + Arrow straight road , take this route. But definetely a longer route.

I have decided to take B'lore - Shimoga route (280KM) for the first hop and I have narrowed down my options to these two "last-mile" routes:
#1 shimoga - ripponpet - nagara - kollur - baindur : ~165KM
#2 shimoga - honavar - baindur : ~220KM

What would be the approximate travel times for these two routes?

Bit off topic:
Shimoga-Sagar-Varadahalli-Holebagilu-Hasirmakki-Kollur mentioned in http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...bangalore.html (Bangalore-Jog-Kollur-Udipi-Sringeri-Horanadu-Bangalore) involves "crossing a water body on a barge along with the car" Sounds interesting, but waiting for the barge, etc. would delay an already long journey further.

However the entire stretch of bad roads is just about 25 kms and the roads are good again from Subrahmanya diversion. i would still recommend this road considering that the bad roads are just for around 25 kms. The Madikeri stretch is bad for around 60 kms and also the road is narrow and windy. Also my car did not bottom out even once and I covered the bad section of ghat of 25 kms in one and half hours.
I want to name this Art of Travelling as OFFRoading I was also one of the unfortunates who had to do this but had no choice. One friend recommended to take Taxi vehicles to these trips instead of spoiling your own car.Goes to the list of worst roads ever driven.

.
Around 4-5 hours of travel time.
Shimoga - Sagara is breeze, you can reach within no time,
But the time consuming part is in between Ghats & Gerusoppa.
Honnavar - Baindoor is also breeze.

Thumbs up There and back again

Hello brethren, I have some good news and some bad. The good news is - it is still possible to drive your own vehicle - safely - from East Bangalore to East of Udupi in 7 hours . The bad news is - your mileage may vary.

I'll jump straight to the trip logs.

Indirangar to VM Nagar (Between Udupi and Manipal) 25th Dec 2009
2:16am start
2:42am NICE road junction Gottigere
3:00am Magadi road - Awesome roads
3:27am Magadi - Rough road within the town
3:45am Kunigal - Awesome roads again
4:14am Bellur cross - Construction and diversions. Keep your eyes pealed.
4:42am CR patna - Good roads start again
5:08am Hassan
5:37am Belur - Great roads. Beware of unmarked dividers
6:00am Chikmaglur - Good roads. Watch out for sudden dips that send your car flying.
7:30am Jayapura - Occasional broken surface. Overall pretty good.
7:52am Sringeri
8:20am Agumbe - Good road but the fun ends here.
8:30am Someshwara - Huge potholes but repairs are in progess.
8:53am Hebri - single lane road. Nightmare when traffic builds up.
9:26am Destination.
Total distance - 431 km. Max speed 110 on Magadi road. 7 hours 10 minutes of drive with two breaks totaling about 15 mins.

Now the variable mileage part - the return journey. Thought I would avoid the mess near Hebri and take the more peaceful NH-13, Karkala - SK border - Sringeri route. But lo and behold, the NH - 13 stood up to its reputation (a la Chitradurga to Hospet) and bogged us down for an hour and half with mother nature pitching in with a blinding downpour.

A small advice; stay away from NH - 13. The alternatives are always better.

We were too busy trying to stay on the road to log the trip in as much details as above. But here goes,

VM Nagar to Indiranagar 28th Dec 2009

4:45 pm - start
5:25 pm - Karkala - Smooth roads
5:50 pm - SK border - Great roads - amazing corners and butter smooth.
7:30 pm - Sringeri - Absolutely pathetic.
9:50 pm - Chikmaglur - Rain upto Balehonnur. Near zero visibility.
11:20pm - CR Patna.
12:15am - NH 48 - Magadi road cross
01.25am - Home
Three breaks - 25 minutes odd in total. 8 hours 40 minutes total travel time. Total distance 459 km.

You could have taken the Karkala-SK Border-Kudremukh-Kalasa-Kottigehara-Belur-Hassan-Blr route. The road upto Kalasa was decent. From Kalasa to Kottigehara it was a bit rough. Going via Sringeri is a roundabout.

I tried that route last time. It is very very slow. Too many curves and switch backs and road is quite rough Kalasa onwards. Mudigere to Belur is also quite bad. Sringeri to CKM is much much better and faster even though a bit longer.

I travelled from HSR-Bangalore to Vittal. I took Madikeri route. Here is an update:
1) HSR to Kushalanagar - started at 6:30 AM, 234 km/4 hrs with 3 breaks in between of 15+min each. Road is good. Nice road dampens with slow trucks on every lane!
2) Kushalanagra to Sampaje - 60 kms/1.5 hrs. Road is bad but doable. After Kushalanagara town about 7 kms of stretch has been done on one side. This road upto Madikeri is becoming 4 lane and all bridges in between are near completion. This road is supposed to be complete by Apr'10!
3) Sampaje to Puttur- 60 kms/40 mins- road is ok with few pot holes that are deep. Some filling work in progress but slow

Another thing I noticed is too many cars this time. Most of them overtaking on curves. Also saw an increase in truck traffic (regular rigid axle ones)
So if you are ok with narrow ghat roads & 60 km of bad stretch you are good via Madikeri else try Shiradi as bad stretch is about 30 km I suppose.

On a different note did some birding and was blessed by a sighting of Southern Hill Myna! Other birds of interest Golden Oriole, Indian Treepie

Gany, thanks for the update.

guess we have to wait for a year or two for a good stretch of road.

Huge trees being cut has become a common sight, and a painful one!

So is Shiradi still a better choice compared to Madikeri route ?

Off late i have been sticking to the hassan-Chickmaglur-agumbe-udupi route and it is holding up well(except for few kms towards the end), But to travel to Mangalore this route will be a big longish

after couple of weeks i plan to go to Mangalore first, looks like Shiradi is a better option than the madikeri route

Did a back-breaking return trip on Rajahamsa buses this weekend. As Gany says, the bad patch might be for 30kms, but that distance is enough to take the wind out of the sails :(. The drivers have become immune to the overly sized pot holes, and drive over them as though these didn't exist!
Guys, suggesting to stick to alternate routes for some more time, for the love of your cars.
