My cousin is going from Bangalore to Udupi right now. I've asked him to go until Hassan by which time I will let him know which route to take to Udupi.

Quick responses appreciated.

Point to note, they are travelling as family with two kids. So they need a decent lunch stop.

If he is on SUV then Shiradi (either via Ujire/Karkala/Udupi) or Mangalore Udupi.

If he is on sedan/hatch : Hassan-Belur-Mudigere-Charmadi-Ujire-Karkala-Udupi

If it is shiradi, 'aditya' at uppinangady could be the lunch stop and for charmadi, you can stop for lunch at 'padiwals' at moodubidri else 'sagar' at karkala.

What would be normal fare for Mangalore airport to Udupi by a cab? Is it advisable to take airport pre-paid cabs or any other good alternative is there?

It can be anywhere between 1500-1800 bucks. Take the pre-paid cab is you are new to the area.

Update on Mangalore - Coorg . Drove on 5th.

The road till from Mangalore to Sullia is in great shape. Just before Sullia town till next 22 kms is really bad. Repair work is on, but really bad shape. After all the way to Madikeri is in great shape.

Madikeri - Mysore - Bangalore - Road is good condition. There are lots of speed breakers. Some of them were monstrous...
Mysore - Bangalore had high traffic density. Roads were great.

Thumbs up Shiradi Ghat to be repaired with 95 crore budget

Hi,

Many people traveling to mangalore/udupi already know that Shiradi ghat has the worst road, and its a big nightmare to pass it. Lots of under chassis damage, deep pot holes, loose stones flying and damaging the car, and half an hour stretch taking 2-3 hours to cross.

But it looks like there is a sight of relief now, as its going to be set right permanently!

Also quoted that
"The work on phase one has already started and the road will be ready for use by January 31, 2014. The construction of the permanent road will start from February 20 and will take approximately 18 months to complete. A website has been created in which the day-to-day progress of the project will be updated and be available for monitoring to anyone and anywhere."

Mr Oscar Fernandes, a senior Congress leader and is the present Union Cabinet Minister for Transport, Road and Highways, Government Of India has promised to solve this problem and said 95crores has been sanctioned for the same.

As seen on the tv news, it seems that the road will be closed for 18months.
Lets just wait and watch as to when this project starts and completes.

Cheers!!

1. In 2007-08 about Rs. 33.5 Crore was sanctioned and road repair was undertaken. within months of completion work, the stretch again became unmotorable. then again another few crore was spent in 2009 and then the road became unmotorable.
http://www.deccanherald.com/content/22635/F

2. Mr. Oscar Fernandes became the transport minister on 17th June 2013. i.e. almost close 7 months now. He is from Udupi District and is very much aware of the horrible condition of NH48 at Shiradi Ghat Section and also the NH17 road from Mangalore onwards till Udupi ( laning not yet completed) and then the Kundapur/shiroor/Byndoor stretch nightmares and it took him a mere 6 months to wake up to the reality and that too when elections are just round the corner. I appreciate his concern.

3. The general election is just 3 months now. We don't know which Party will form the govt at the center (may be a third front with regional parties /Khichdi or Chitranna Govt) and with all their personal agendas, God only knows when a spanner will be put into this project. A Good example is the Mangalore-Udupi stretch ( I don't know if it is over a decade now since this 4/6 laning of the road commenced and still we know that the stretch is far from complete and this inspite of sanction of money and all)

4. Sanctioning is one thing/ beginning of real / permanent concreting / tarring / repairing the road is another thing and also doing a quality work is another thing. There are so many instances where road work is stalled in the middle as the payment is not made to the contractor and stuff like that.

5. I read somewhere that there is a proposal to have a tunnel straight and right through the shiradi ghat. If that proposal comes through then God save us. because then repairing Shiradi ghat will be looked as wasted extra expense and condition may become worse. Why I say this is when I was driving through Uttar Pradesh a few months ago, there were many extremely bad stretches of NH (almost no roads) and on inquiring I was told that soon the 6 lane road work is going to begin and hence repairing the existing roads in considered as a drain on the Govt (and this story is running since many years) and it is another matter that 6 laning may take a few decades more in these places.

I am not a pessimist and I really want this Shiradi Ghat to be repaired and rendered back to its earlier pristine condition ( Shiradi ghat and Mangalore-Goa roads were one of the best in south India about a decade/15 years back and it was sheer heavenly experience to drive on these roads those days).

But honestly these TV news and statements from Minister has long lost its relevance and does not enthuse people much.

Anyways 18 months of closure of this road will render too much load on Charmadi ghat and the Puttur-Sullia-Madikeri-Bangalore route too. Hope everything is taken care properly and those 2 roads are repaired first (especially Madikeri route) else we will have another nightmare cropping up. So let us keep our fingers crossed and hope to zip on the silken roads of Shiradi Ghats soon.

Im sure all the MLA's from that region would benefit greatly from an International trip across around 25 countries for a two month period, at the cost of the state exchequer, to assess, learn and judge the quality of road infrastructure there for themselves. So that they can come back and replicate the same in Karnataka, India. Nothing like seeing things for yourself and then learning as a step towards replication. Of course, they cannot be parted from their near and dear ones and their official secretaries and bureaucrats, for fear that their work will be neglected, so all of those absolutely must accompany them.

Lets make this suggestion at the Vidhana Soudha tomorrow, on Sankranti day.

What say?

(Miserable, corrupt creatures in the system will never let our poor public reap the benefit of the taxes we pay!)

From what I've heard, the Shiradi ghat gets in the mess that it is in post monsoon more from the heavy trucks that ply on the route, rather than the rains.

I hope the build quality of the road is decent enough to withstand that.

18 months is an awful time to even partially shut down that critical route; it is going to be nightmare to travel.

Well said!

I traveled a lot between Bangalore and Manipal and that Volvo ride was a nightmare each time! I once drove down and my Corsa promptly had its sump guard bent.

Had a hassle free drive to Mangalore and back over the past weekend.

Took 45 minutes to drive from Sakleshpur to Gundya both ways. A small stretch of 1 to 2 kms still remains unpatched near kempuhole dam site, which i feel could be covered in a couple of days. A culvert construction near the dam site has construction material on the road and is a small bottleneck.

I found the patchwork to be of much better quality around Gundya than that in the upper reaches of the ghat section.

A friend I met in Manipura ( near Palya on the Hassan - Sakleshpur stretch ) has reported work to commence soon on the 4 laning of Hassan - Sakleshpur road. So, those shady drives from Hassan to Ballupete and futheron may soon be a thing of the past :-(

Great optimism but i doubt there will be any change out here.

Some of the routes which really needs urgent repair work is listed.

Mangalore- Udupi
Bangalore - Mysore( already at its limit)
Shiradi Ghat
Mysore - Hunsur - Gonikoppa- Virajpet

Its laughable when people complain about heavy trucks spoiling the road. Europe has bigger trucks and more mountains. Are their roads as bad?

If the CM of Karnataka is listening, there is a airport coming up in Kannur(Kerala) which is 60 kms from Virajpet. People in the north kerala area who depended on blr for their travel will surely switch and all the tourists coming to coorg can use this airport instead of landing in bangalore and having 7 hours of back breaking journey.
