Thank you Rahul for the update. This is promising. However, I am still deciding between driving and taking a bus.

Completed another weekend drive to Mangalore via Shiradi.

A small bad section has developed before Sakleshpur town. The roads on the ghat after the concrete section is fast deteriorating. A lot of potholes have developed along a 20 kms stretch and looks like it would only get worse especially with heavy rains in the region.

As on 24th July.

Puttur - Uppinangady - Bad, frequent potholes and deeper side skirts on two sides of road.

Uppinangady - Gundya - Fairly good, look out for few surprising potholes and some in making.

Gundya - Sakleshpur (tar) - Average , Road is fast deteriorating and at places drive experience is poor.

Gundya - Sakleshpur (concrete) - Good , So far concrete road has held ground (literally!), there are few immediate step gradients to look out though.

Overall average and visibility depends on rain and other factors. Drive safe!

I'm planning a trip to Mangalore this weekend and thinking of taking the Charmadi ghat route. Is it better to go via Hassan -> Belur, or via Sakleshpur?

Is the Madikeri route better than the Charmadi ghats at this time?

Just checking to see if anyone else is planning to drive down from Bangalore towards Mangalore tomorrow. I'm planning to start around 10 AM, but can start much earlier if someone else is also going.

I'll be driving alone - not yet decided between Yadiyur->Madikeri and Sakleshpur->Charmadi.

I drove via shiradi last week and can say that it's still holding up. I guess except for few bumpy curves it is still in much better condition than bangalore roads

Thanks rajshenoy! Shiradi would be ideal if it's manageable. Any unexpected surprises or places to watch out for?

I am sorry to reply late. I guess you must have already reached by now. For others reference, the only surprises are the many waterfalls in full flow. Do be careful as they might take your focus away(and the car on opposite side)

Is the railway flyover completed? If not, does it still see traffic snarls and one should stick to the Mekhri Circle route? Please advise.

I dont think it has completed yet. But I dont take that portion of ORR. So better lets hear from folks who actually use it. Lets wait for their responses.

It is indeed not and Its hanging there since ages now!

However, if you plan to reach Hebbal, you have an option to reach ORR either at BEL Circle of before that via Platinum City Apartments & HMT route that will bypass you from the Railway tracks through another parallel bridge.""

For folks staying in this side of the city, this is now the most common route and this also includes a lot of petty trucks and other cars which were never taking this route before. Thanks to the super long snarls at the Railway Gate.

Hence, option for Mathikere/Mekhri Circle option or taking the HMT route doesn't really need too much of thought anyway since for both these roads you will cross the common point called "Goreguntepalya Junction" anyway.

The URL will give you the directions for this route to reach ORR on the other side of the Railway track:

From Goreguntepalya to ORR bypassing Railway Gate

15 mins for 5.3 kms is indeed a huge time saver opposed to an easy 45 minutes when the gate is closed at peak hours (25-30 mins guaranteed wait in general)

The steps are simple:
  • Stay right soon after you descend NBTL
  • Take U Turn at the very first signal after descending from NBTL
  • After U, drive towards Tumkur but dont take NBTL and stay on left
  • Just below NBTL, make U Turn again (Onto Service Road)
  • Drive on Service Road for 300 meters & pass Metro station
  • Soon after Metro, take left (you are now on CMTRI/Platinum City route to HMT
  • Feed the above route onto your Gmaps and just follow to reach ORR

Thanks Parag. I guess for onward route, one needs to take the HMT road and come out on Tumkur Road from behind the metro station, come towards the city, and take a U-turn at G'palya junction to get back on to the NBTL. Right?

Also, this is probably a better bet than going via Mekhri Circle.

Perfect it is.That is exactly the route to head back. And you can reach HMT road via BEL circle instead of ORR this time.

Not yet. Dont know what they are waiting for as the top section above the track is done. Check Google maps before you take this route.
