Default Latest update Karwar-Mangalore

We drove on this road yesterday. For the first 50 km, it's a fairly good road. From Honavar, the road deteriorates with some bad patches. It completely disappears around Bhatkal for around 20 kms on either side. Till Kundapur, it is absolute hell. Why are these roads in such a deplorable condition and why is nothing being done about them? And the irony is that a huge highway is being built along the perfectly good road which exists from Kundapur to Suratkal.

A friend who drove on NH17 yesterday said : "No road" "moon would have less craters" "a complete offroad driving experience" "pregnant ladies may have premature delivery"

With most roads leading to the coast in bad shape and this update, it is a nightmare to drive to and around Western Ghats in KA. It is really sad to see that roads of one of the most beautiful areas in the country are in such a state!

We were so angry at the condition of the roads that we suggest that contractors and anyone else involved in the road building ( that includes politicians) should be shot and their bodies used to fill up the ditches! Blood thirsty but it is so sad to see such roads in such a lovely part of the country.

Aha. Finally people have woken up to the fact that Bhatkal roads are the National Horror!
Reading people's view here has made me decide to take the volvo bus to Udupi on Dec 10th instead of my original plan to drive down.

Here's my log on earlier trip done during Navratri.

rs49, thank you for posting this detailed information.

We were planning a trip from Madgaon to Udupi in the second week of December, covering Karwar, Gokarna, Jog, Manipal, Malpe and St. Mary's Islands. Am now considering leaving the car at Honnavar after seeing Jog falls and doing the rest of the trip southward to Udupi and back by hired vehicle, bus or train.
