Default Planning 3-day trip in Chail/Shimla/Kufri

I am planning a 3-day trip to Chail/Shimla/Kufri from Dec-23rd to Dec-26th. Plan is to fly from Chennai to Chandigarh on 23rd and drive up to Shimla by end of day. We then have time until Dec 26th mid day to be in that area before driving back to Chandigarh and catching an evening flight out. So 2.5 days excluding travel

I needed the advise of frequent travellers on...

* Where would you recommend I spend most time - Shimla or Kufri or Chail?

* Where should I stay? -- in Shimla, Chail or Kufri?

I want to stay at a good, luxurious place. From initial homework, seems like Shimla has some nice luxurious hotels....Chail probably doesnt (saw some unflattering reviews of the HPTDC hotels & cottages there)...know nothing about Kufri.

Have never been to Shimla before but have heard that it is super commercialized. Should then I consider staying there at all? Or is the rustic beauty of Chail or Kufri better?

* Where can I find info on skiing in Kufri? What are the good ski resorts / facilities there? Do they rent gear? Are these ski slopes safe?

* In late December, would road and weather conditions be good for driving? Or is it hazardous and best avoided?

Thanks a lot in advance for replying!

Regards
Kruti

Skiing in Kufri is best forgotten. Your options would be a day each at Chail, Shimla and a couple of hours at Kufri. Drive down to Naldehra its far better. Chail has a private property who offers some interesting outdoor activities, check it out. Roads are least of your worries in late december.

Hi Kruti,

As wanderernomad has rightly pointed out, Skiing or any related activity in Kufri is minimalistic at the best. Also, this region gets most of it's snowfall in the month of Jan.

And you've heard it right, Shimla is completely commercialised, but is good for a single night's stay. The private property near Chail is Tarika's Jungle Retreat (www.tarikasjungleretreat.com), have heard some very good reviews about it, though it is a bit pricey.

If you like peace and lesser crowds, one option could be to visit Kasauli either while on your way to Shimla or coming down (it is just a 13 km diversion from the main road). Kasauli has very less crowds as compared to nearby areas, especially if you plan to spend a night over there (there are some very good but rarely advertised private properties over there).

Roads from Chandigarh to Shimla and up and good for most of the part but do expect a bit of rush due to holiday season.

Regards,
Jaspreet Singh

An update on the Chail route. The normal route to Chail (from Kandaghat) is completely closed. The bridge had broken away last year and vehicles were crossing the river directly. 2 weeks back, due to monsoons the river current has swollen and Tipper Trucks got washed away. Now the army has closed the route till the time the bridge can be repaired.

To get to Chail, you now have to drive to Shimla (take the byepass). From there either take the Junga route or go via Kufri. I'd prefer the former as its a narrow village road with almost no traffic. Either way its an extra 40 kms. Plan accordingly.

I just finished a trip to Spiti and Ladakh and spent a night at Chail on day 1 of the trip. The bridge has been washed away, but I was still able to use the Kandhaghat route on July 4 - the river had very little water and was able to easily cross it. The route was not closed.

Stayed at Chail Palace (HPTDC). Like all other HPTDC properties, it has a beautiful location but "OK" rooms. Chail Palace is probably better maintained than most other HPTDC properties, and also has pretty extensive grounds inside the property for walking around.

I know the route was not closed on July 4. In fact, it effectively got closed on July 14, 4 days before I was supposed to go there. I got a call from the hotel people that day to update me on the situation. I can very much confirm the route is closed now.
