Question Need some pointers! Calicut - Aluva - Rameshwaram - Madurai - Ramakkalmedu - Calicut

We, a family of 3 adults and 1 child,is planning to spend a few days during the first week of April.

After small discussions among ourselves, we've shortlisted few places.

1) Ramakkalmedu.
2) Valparai.
3) Rameshwaram via Madurai.

- We have 4 days and 3 nights at our disposal.
- We'll be doing this trip in our Fiat Grande Punto.
- We'll be starting our journey from Tirurangadi, nearly 30 kms from Calicut.
- We'll be visitng Kodaikanal during the last week of this month. ie, No Kodai this time.
- The days does not include weekends. (For the record, it is from Tuesday to Friday)

It would be great if anyone could guide me with the weather condition, road conditions, route details, important places of interest and good budget accomodation. Also please share with us the better scenic routes.

Please pour in your suggestions. Thanks in advance.

PS: Extra info on these places are most welcome.

Till the rains start Valparai would be warm. The days would be around 32/33 degrees in terms of temperature and may not be very comfortable. Though you could stay and relax and roam around the tea gardens in the early morning when the weather would be pleasant.

What you could possibly do is make a trip to Rameswaram and club may be destination like Tiruchendur & Kanyakumari along with it.

If you have not already fixed your destination, you could also consider Kovalam and Kanyakumari for 3 nights

Wow its warm in April itself! I just "googled" for Valprai temperature and was surprised to see that its about 24-25 average and the highest crossing 35!
Some hill station!

Make a choice whether you would want to vist a cool/hot region.

Rameswaram will be a nice place to visit to at this time of the year. But be aware of the weather which will be hot as the summer has already begun. The roads you will encounter are good and the traffic will be sparse. The whole of Rameshwaram could be covered in less than a day and you will have nothing much left to spend your rest of the days. I wouldn't suggest coupling it with visiting Kanyakumari.

I think it comes to more of what you want, if your family has been long deciding to visit Rameswaram then I don't see any harm in visiting the place. But if you are looking at it as summer vacation, then I would suggest Vaalparai and places around.

Ramakalmedu, near Munnar, have been there. It's rather windy on the hill there, but is there anything worth seeing there, I doubt. surely nothing there for 3/4 days. Could visit Munnar though.

I can never thank you all enough for your inputs. Once again, thanks a lot T-BHPians.

After making my parents read your inputs, we have made changes in our plan.

The updated route.

Calicut - Aluva - Rameshwaram - Madurai - Ramakkalmedu - Calicut

The Plan.

Day 01 : 04.04.2011 :
  • Start from Calicut in the evening/night.
  • Stay at our hometown, Aluva.

Day 02 : 05.04.2011 :
  • Start our journey from Aluva to Rameshwaram, in the early hours of the day.
    Stay at Rameshwaram

Day 03 : 06.04.2011 :
  • Visit to Madurai.
  • Might stay at Madurai. If time permits, will be heading towards Ramakkalmedu the same day.

Day 04 : 07.08.2011 :

  • Stay at Ramakkelmedu

Day 05 : 08.04.2011
  • Return journey.

Few pointers.

  • After making my father read some threads in the 'Travelogues' section, he has promised that we'll be covering this stretch - 'Rameshwaram-Dhanushkodi'.
  • Seriously we need your advice on the route details(if possible, with Google maps) and the must see places along the way and near our destinations.
  • We will have only ONE driver. So driving for really long stretches continuously might be an issue.

Any other suggestions and advices are really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you plan to goto Dhanushkodi, best would be to hire a jeep from Rameshwaram. (Unless you have a 4X4).

Yes, if you are planning to check out the interiors of Dhanuskodi, a jeep is the best bet, else you can take the Punto itself.

The best place to stay in Rameswaram is TTDC, but there are also some good hotels on the lane that leads to the temple. There is one good hotel by the name 'Hotel Muruga' or so, I don't remember the name exactly, it was newly constructed, had some good rooms and a decent parking space, you can check that out. But just be aware that you can not expect 5star facilities.

Some basic checks:
- Make sure the car wears sun films
- Check the AC. Clean the pollen filters and vents. The AC will have to work over time.
- You might encounter quite a few unmarked speed breakers, so it's best to drive at 80-90kmph in country roads.
- Don't get your car washed in Rameswaram or in any coastal region. The salt water can really harm the paint finish.
- Plan to reach Rameswaram by 10am.
