Default Confused, What to Buy: Laura TSi or Optra Magnum TCDi

Hello All -

The Skoda Celebration Offer has really caught on, I was almost decided on buying the Optra TCDi when this offer came out, the following are my thoughts on both the products but I am seeking advice from Fellow T-BHPian's on my next purchase.

Please provide your valuable thoughts to help me choose the BEST.

A few financial facts before I start discussing the Pros and Cons

Laura TSi Classic - 12.20L OTR (Haryana Reg.)
Optra TCDi LS - 8.9L OTR (Haryana Reg.)

My average running for 3 years would be anywhere between 35K - 40K Kms.

So straight up, I'm saving close to 3.3L on the Optra.

Now, the details:

Laura TSi Classic

Pros:

1) Gem of an engine 1.8L Turbocharged, 160 BHP and 250 Nm of torque.
2) ABS, EBD, Airbags included.
3) Build Quality.
4) Handling.
5) Suspension set up - Amazing, it just eats up all the undulations.
6) The fact that set me thinking on the Laura was, the same engine is doing it's duty in the Superb and Audi A4 TFSi.
7) 15K service interval - Do you guys think that it is advisable for this long an interval?

Cons:

1) Skoda A$$ - We all know, it has been bad over the years, fellow BHPian's please state if you seen improvements over the years.

2) Resale Value.
3) Reliability Factor - Frequent Breakdowns.

Optra TCDi LS -

Pros:

1) As another BHPian has mentioned on his ownership experience, the "Warp Effect" that you get in the Optra was missing even on the Laura TSi.
2) Again another Gem of an engine - 2.0L, 120.5 BHP and 314 NM of torque.
3) All 5 Alloys.
4) DIESEL, DIESEL and DIESEL - I would be saving on the fuel costs.
5) Space - Seemed more spacious than the Laura.
6) Torquier than Laura - The feeling post 2K RPM mark is better in the Optra than the Laura, though I felt the Laura can attain more speeds and it was more stable at higher speeds.

Cons -

1) Poor Resale.

2) Product might get shelved in the near future, to what I can guess, it has 1 more year left before it is shelved.

3) Chevy A$$ - Skoda is Bad, don't know if Chevy is any better? Guys please chip in if you had any experiences.

So Fellow BHPian's please help me choose the right product looking at the financial aspect of things and the reliability factor.

Happy Motoring !!

I would recommend Chevy Optra. One of my friends has it and its already done close to 1L Kms still no trouble. Chevy A$$ isn't very good but much-much better than Skoda, plus the cost of repairs isn't as atrocious as Skoda. If you're alright with slightly dated looks and low resale value (please remember Skoda resale wouldn't be any better) then its got to be the Optra.

There is news doing the rounds that a refreshed Laura is to be expected soon. Perhaps you may want to consider that too and time your purchase/ booking accordingly.

Of the two I vote for the Chevy Optra; Skoda in India is too nightmarish to put any money on, though the car itself is fabulous.

Thanks for the inputs, Selfdrive.

The only reason why I am considering the Laura is the mouth watering price of 12.20L OTR, the refreshed and all will be priced higher, that would not work for me anyways.

More so, looks, bells and whistles don't count much on me, it is the 1.8L engine that I am bent upon, get rid off the aibags and ABS and price it at 10 OTR and my cheque is ready.

Out of the two, the Optra makes more sense.
Reasons:
1. Diesel. Enough said. Savings would be galore, compared to Petrol.
2. OTR cost is cheaper by 3.3L.
3. In between the two, Chevy seems to have better A.S.S
4. Re-sale (Both would be on par, to be honest)

My heart would still go for the Laura though. 160BHP does that to you .

Skoda TSI - If you have enough dough to maintain it. Optra magnum - If you want an all rounder.

Thanks Brraj -

So basically you mean the Skoda is going to much more expensive to maintain?

Pardon me but could you please elaborate, the allrounder part on the Optra.

Happy Motoring !!

Why not ABS, it would be useful.

No offence meant Swanand, I love the Laura too. Just that the nightmarish stories from Skoda are very offputting.
Optra is one decision that is a combination of both head and heart!

Skoda is quite expensive to maintain; quite there with the Germans.

Is the price a result of the Skoda Celebrations offer? I'd suggest you to be very careful with the booking.

A friend had recently booked a Fabia with some dealer in Delhi; gave the booking amount too. Firstly, as part of the offer, only Silver colour is available. A few days later, the dealer called saying the car has been over-booked due to the offer and he cannot guarantee that they will get the car.

So, get this sorted out with your dealer before you proceed further.

Assume for a moment that the bad days of Skoda A.S.S. are gone. History. Done and over with.

Now compare

Chevy saves you 3.30 lacs. I do not know if this is possible for you or not, but I would easily manage 15% pa on my money. That adds up to approx a shade under 50 grand. Diesel at 41.25 bucks(?) . So you got how many KM ? You stated 35 Thousand odd KM for 3 years. You are running for free. No fuel cost burden.

Now go down the resale street. Your base on which you are depreciating is lower. So capital preservation.

If I look at this from purely a monetary perspective, Chevy is the better deal.

If the Skoda dealer in your town has a good reputation or you know him personally, go for Skoda. Else stay clear- there are enough horror stories on the forums.

I am curious- there is simply no contest choosing between an Optra Magnum diesel and a Skoda TSI petrol. Normally you worry about buying a diesel car because it costs about a lac more than the equivalent diesel. In this case, the diesel is 3.3 lac cheaper. And the fuel price difference is stupendous as well. Resale loss on a lower priced vehicle will obviously be less as well. And you seem to like the Magnum (I don't, but have a couple of friends who swear by it).

Why are you even thinking? Opt for the cheaper car, to buy and maintain. Worst case, you don't like it you can sell it off and upgrade. If you end up not liking the Laura, you'll regret it all your life!

edit: please check the fine print carefully before falling for any "celebrations offers". Companies are not stupid- they do bargain sales for a reason!

What @noopster has pointed is very important, there have been stories on the forum where folks have found features missing/removed from the Laura (and hence the price reduction). Features like Fog Lamps, Auto Dimming RVM etc. Please check before proceeding, as i have seen similar cases in Bangalore.

I vote for Optra. It is built like a Tank.
First impression is the best impression, 'thud' from the door when you enter inside the car makes you feel safe and the noise isolation after closing the door, you can experience the pin drop silence. Also the rear seat comfort is better than Laura (my personal opinion).

Vitamin 'M' - you are saving on ownership cost & running cost as well. Also Chevy A.S.S. is far better than Skoda.
