Question Automatic

I can only drive automatics. i currently drive a Zen AT with an Esteem engine and it has seen a lot of action. the accelaration is awesome, but at higher speeds i get a little nervous. also, the car does not have power steering and is quite difficult to turn at low speeds.

i think i've outgrown that car and am thinking of getting a bigger, more comfortable car which is a little more mellow and subdued. It is important that this car will not cause my wife to keep telling me slow down, like the Zen. on average i drive about 30,000 kms or so a year, half that in town and half on the highway.

i do not mind second cars. my budget is about 5 lakhs. what car should I get?

thanks,

Rahul

try to find a used mitsubishi lancer invecs 1.8.

A late 2003 model may be around 5 lacs and you will have the joy of manual to an extent too.

Perhaps you could also try to find a NHC-CVT - though there would not be much around.
Its a breeze to drive around the city and does not feel like a big car at all.
It is definitely a lot bigger and comfortable. Also, its a lot more mellow and subdued - and the good FE is the icing on the cake.

Rahul a 2000 or 2001 OHC should cost you between 3.5 to 4 lakh rupees.

Agree with Dippy.. OHC is pretty good..
But my honest advice to you is if you can.. learn to drive a stick shift.. there's really no fun in an automatic.. unless you go for the SMG's or tiptronic's which are really clutchless manual's.

Dont agree there. If driving is the only way you plan to have fun in the car, then yes. But, for our city traffic (Bangalore types), most of the times, you cant drive for fun. Shuffle the music, sip your juice or coffee, or just sit relaxed talking on your handsfree phone - this is possible only with an automatic.

Wish we had more choice for automatic cars < Rs 9L (currently just two - Santro and City). Remember how much the Kinetic automatic scooters sold when they were launched? Even ladies could ride them - was the reason they said for its success.

Maruti, Hyundai - come on, give us an auto transmission car, and you may be able to repeat the Kinetic story.

the problem is that i cannot use my legs, which is why i'm left with the ATs.....
but the zen AT with the esteem engine was awesome......i have raced the zen against most cars including a swift, an accent, and even an accord (although in traffic when over taking was difficult) and the zen was quicker at least till 100 km/hour.

i actually decided to change my car after a near death experience when my car flew for a few metres (WRC style, and I had konis too) on the highway from chennai to trichy. i realised that the car was too dangerous and more importantly my wife got out of the car and took a bus from there to trichy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
