Being a VW fan, I love the Jetta, but the Octavia is more powerful and has goodies like the panoramic sunroof, etc.

Looking at the on road prices, I thought to myself whether I should then consider a used BMW 320i / 325i instead. Yes these cars are very hard to come by and will be much older; at least around 5-10 years old. Due to this, should I then consider the BMW 320d?

Totally confused!!
for 25L you can also look at 2012/13 Audi A6 quattro 3.0 Turbo petrol. We recently got one in the family for 24 L but that was in Dec 2015, at a time petrols were not in demand. But if you look hard enough, you may get a good example around this price point.

I TDed the Jetta TDI AT and boy, it is fun! Agree, it could use some goodies and comes no where close to the looker that the Octavia is.

If you're looking at used cars, you can even get a 5 series around that price range although with a relatively higher running.

If it's the same engine and gearbox as the s4, then it would have dsg issues in the long run. I know of a guy who has had the gearbox replaced twice.

The 320i and 325i E90 are avoidable. The 330i is something you can consider, it lacks low end grunt but is very fun to drive! Apart from this try and look out for a 328i F30, that is ideal. But a 320d will be great fun too, and with a tune will match the 328i pace.

The Octy 1.8 seems to still be having issues. I wouldn't go for it. Their service again seems to be improving a slight bit, but I still wouldn't want to deal with them again.

328i will be the best choice for a fun to drive car.
Will be hard to find a used f30 328i, hardly see any for sale.

Just a real life scenario:
Incase you go for anyone from VW or skoda, you will itch for upgrade in 4-5 years and hit a depreciation curve. Buying a BMW is somewhere in your remotest dreams will still remain a dream.

Hence, i would suggest to go for 2-3 years old, less than 40K on ODO F30 320d. 8 speed ZF is a gem of a gearbox and you get 190 bhp with 400 NM torque for the same money. If the car is under BSI and warranty, its like sone pe suhaga.

Yes the pro of a BMW is that it is purely a drivers car; the con of course is its maintenance costs. Is the petrol better than the diesel in terms of power and driving experience?
Like others said, based on the 25L budget the petrol seems more reachable. But if you have the budget and you can find a good 320D, the diesel will run as happy as the petrol is and more.

Jetta is a segment below and though one can say its a drivers car, its not in comparison to any BMW series. The rear wheel drive, the long history of 3 series being designed to keep the driver happy which is reflective of no compromise crampy rear seats.

Maintenance is the only question where you need to really be ready for surprises if its not under BSI and warranty. You are talking about laks of rupees to fix when things go kaput.

As your only dependable and go anywhere(without second thoughts) car I would recommend either VW Jetta TDI DSG or Skoda Octavia TDI DSG. I own a Laura TDI DSG since last 5 years, and I love it. Skoda support is terrible, buy only if you have a decent dealership around.

I am not sure of 7 Speed DSG in Octavia TSI, and I still do not recommend it. TDI is just 1 second or so slower but has much superior FE.

I agree with Akshay1234, if you are looking for a BMW, look for a F30, and nothing like 328i. But be prepared for much much higher expenses beyond the warranty and maintenance package expiry, be ready to leave your car home when it rains, and say goodbye to go anywhere ability. It will have a lot more downtime compared to VW cousins.

If you get this dream BMW described above in your budget then go for it with eyes closed. Otherwise I'd say gamble with a new Octavia TSI Style+ but only if you have a dependable dealer around. You get a brand new fully loaded car, 2 + 2 years warranty, loads of practicality and boy, does it move?

Default New Skoda Octavia or Pre-owned BMW F30 320d. EDIT: New 320d booked

I drive an Octy 1.8 TSI and it's brilliant. The past stories of gear box issues are true but one needs to understand that cars with dual clutch tranny cannot be driven like the ones with CVT tranny . In DSG , while at halt the gear should be put back to N if the halt is gonna be more that 5 seconds. Most of the issues were with superb petrol and old superb being a chauffeur car, the drivers wouldn't have bothered about this DSG behaviour when the gear box is strained .
I wont advise which car you should take but if you going for Octy, please ensure not to strain gear boxes .
