Talking Old Honda city or Esteem ? Help!

Hi guys,

Am planin to buy a used car in couple of months, so if u can plz advice me on which one to opt for

Cars short listed ---- Honda City or Esteem
Price range --- Max 3.5 Lakhs
Maintenance & After Sales Service (A.S.S.) expectations --- Should be good
Average distance traveled per month --- not much of traveller, around 300 kms
Where car will be mostly used (city / highway / rough roads etc) -- City
Chauffer driven / self driven -- Self
Whether the vehicle will be shared by other members of family -- None
Any specific requirements from car (ex. Better luggage space, responsive engine, rear seat comfort) --- nothin expect pure driving pleasure
How long you intend on keeping this car (and how important resale is to you) --- Not thought of it yet,

With a price range of 3.5 Lacs, you have quite a bit of options.
Esteem would be a good choice where you can get good second hand cars "Vxi" for 2.25.

Honda would be on an expensive side as you would be paying premium for the Honda badge. The refinement levels in driving and fuel efficiency is much higher on an OHC but Esteem stands out as a car with better VFM.

For 3.5 Lakhs, you will get a 2002 OHC which IMO is far better than an esteem. You will not regret it. If you still need the esteem, gimme a PM.

there were two types of the old honda city. the first one was the type they launched in india in 1997 if im not mistaken. they then changed they headlights and tail lights and also a few interior changes. that is the ohc type 2.

the came the new honda city (nhc) and the nhc type 2 or zx.

I agree. The maintenance cost might be the only area where an Esteem will have an edge

I agree with most people here an OHC type 2 1.5 would be a very nice car to have. Make sure it is a clean piece, well-maintained & has had no accidents.

Out of these 2, I would place my money on the OHC, Why have you not thought of Accent or a Lancer ? Both these cars being excellent VFM, very spacious and having more power. Also you will get good deals between 2.5 - 3 Lacs on both the cars.

I drove a new Esteem for a couple of hundred kms between Davangere and Belgaum - and at least on stock tyres she felt nowhere as good a handler or precise as my 6 year old OHC on really dead MRFs. OHC is my vote!

the refinement levels of a honda city is far better compared to an esteem. and if you can get a 1.5 EXI 100bhp, nothing like it! its exhilarating. i would expect the esteem to be replaced sooner than later!

Certainly the Old Honda City; still a blast to drive. Another car you might want to consider is the second-hand Baleno. The car has terrible resale value....and that could work to your advantage.
