Thanks everyone for your valuable inputs. I have spoken to my friend about all that you've suggested - It has really made him think about it and come to a logical conclusion. Hopefully, he'll make the right decision by tomorrow.

In the meanwhile, any more inputs would be appreciated.

Talking about spares and spare prices, can someone enlighten me about what spares wear out and how frequently? I know my question is as vague as it gets, but Skoda owners could tell me more about its maintenance.

PM me for his phone no - he is desperate. It is a good car and the old man also has seen it
Sorry this is off topic but which "nearly new" car did you pick up ?

Contrary to the other comments here, I would say it is a good buy, especially if you are getting it for close to 4L. The owner already has a few cars in the stable -- an OHC Vtec and Corolla and is looking to replace the Esteem with the Rider, so this car would share the daily ride burdens. More so reason why spares or FE shouldnt be a major concern. Look at what do you get in return - a Skoda to go along with the Honda and Toyota. Go for it.

PS: Butttt if you are buying it, then ALL the comments here are valid. A Baleno at the same price will be the best bet :-)
