Here are some other suggestions:
- Used Lancer D
- Used Logan (these are available)
- New hatchback - Santro CNG? WagonR LPG? Spark? Indica Vista?
A new car will be much more reliable than a highly run used car. Given indian road conditions, a used car will start showing its age soon and will be begging for attention. If you want a car which you will use for a few years (3-5 years), a new one is the way to go.
If you want a car for a year, a 70K City would suffice.

I agree, a colleague sold his City Automatic for 80 K, '99 Model, he was the second user but then it was sparsely used. (Bought from an army guy)
He had no probelems for the six months he owned it. You could perhaps get 2002-03 Model and rest happy. I have had huge problems with the Ikon Petrol post the 50-60K mark - needs constant maintenence.

An Ikon at 78k kms will definitely start needing some looking into. Servicing costs of an Ikon are pretty high. Your friend is giving it away at the right time. Please avoid that car. Take a look at other options.
